  • In this captivating episode, we embark on a remarkable sailing adventure through the enchanting Crinan Canal-a scenic shortcut between the Clyde and the Sound of Jura. Join us as we immerse ourselves in the wonders of 18th and 19th-century technology, experiencing the awe-inspiring journey that lifts Polaris (and our crew) 20 meters above sea level and back to the embrace of salty water.
The Crinan Canal, a true marvel of engineering, takes us on a voyage through time. With 15 locks and 7 bridges, we navigate this picturesque waterway, marveling at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the past. As each lock opens and closes, Polaris gracefully ascends and descends, transcending the boundaries between land and sea.

Join us in discovering the hidden gems and tranquility that the Crinan Canal has to offer. Witness the seamless blend of natural beauty and man-made wonders as we sail under arching bridges and through locks that have stood the test of time.

    Hi!
We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence.
Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter.
Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker.
We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

As a boy I spent a lot of time following boats through the canal and opening the gates. Later in life I have my own sailboat. This is a beautiful part of the world and lots of really interesting historic sites nearby.

Grossartige Aufbereitung von Bildern, Geschichte und ersten Skipper Info. Ein einziger Genuss. Man blickt den weiteren Berichten mit Freude entgegen.

Aye, but you missed a great sail around the Mull. Lots of fun, especially if you also visit Rathlin Island
