These are great soundtracks composed by David Wise. The Game Boy soundtrack is similar to NES one minus a few songs. How he makes great use of the respective sound chips. A 6502 derivative in the NES, the Z80 in the Game Boy, the YM2612 in the Genesis, and the SPC-700 in the SNES.
The Genesis has a nice deep FM bass, but the SNES makes wonderful use of samples, i prefer the SNES most of the time especially because of the much better drums
can't belive that so many people dislike NES version, I think it has the most solid sound and besides it definitely touches hidden parts of the soul. Well ofcourse it's 8bit and so on, but we are talking about music from consoles that are from the past century, wtf? Though it seems to me that opinion depends on what console is associated with childhood.
It's weird, level 6 music on NES and Sega is intimidating (as it should be, you're falling into a basement filled with bad guys and their boss), while SNES is like a walk in a park.
To many here trying to pick sides lol. A real gamer loves them all because the game is *awesome* In all versions. Point blank. Case Closed. Then again I grew up with NES, SNES, and SEGA so I have no real bias unless the game is fundamentally bad~
SNES SPC700 chip owns on this game......couple that with the MSU1 capabilities of a cart like SD2SNES and no more needs to be said.......I do like the sound of the NES port too.......and this might not be the best use of the YM2612 of the Genesis/Megadrive but still sounds pretty good
Man whoever programmed the sound driver for the Genesis didn't know what they were doing... Poor David had to use a shitty sound driver in this game. In the first Battletoads, it used SMPS Z80 so he had a decent sound driver to work with, and made a kick ass soundtrack. The Genesis is capable of producing better sound than what was used in this game. So this is one of the rare cases where I prefer the SNES over the Genesis. All three of them are pretty good, but the Genesis could have been a lot better.
David Wise didn't have any involvement in the Mega Drive version of Battletoads, as that wasn't even developed by Rare. They only licensed it to Sega, who tasked the development to Arc System Works (pre-Guilty Gear Arc System Works, it was a far cry from what they are now). So the Mega Drive version of Battletoads it's a Japanese developed conversion. That's why it was able to use the SMPS Z80 sound driver, which was restricted only to the Japanese side of Mega Drive game development. The composer (more like arranger) of the Mega Drive version was Hikoshi Hashimoto, who also worked on the Game Gear version. Now, regarding the Mega Drive version of Battletoads Double Dragon, that one was indeed a full "Rare production" (as stated in the intro, Rare put that only when they handled the development themselves), and therefore David Wise handled that version. The sound driver of Battletoads Double Dragon was a custom one that David Wise programmed himself, so he knew what he was doing in order to take account of the hardware. And I think it's pretty fine. By the way, the Mega Drive versions of Championship Pro-Am and Snake Rattle 'n Roll were also fully developed by Rare and David Wise also handled the composition of both, using the same custom sound driver that was employed in Battletoads Double Dragon.
@@WeskerSega yeah but here's the difference, snake rattle n roll was on par with the nes version, rc pro am was BETTER the nes version, and this is a load of dog shit. I agree with sonikku1011. I actually think the sound chip didn't support samples, and david wise had to do the best he could. This is why he's so amazing at making music.
1.NES has the worst sound chip, but the funny thing is that NES's 2 level is better than other versions for me). 2.Genesis's beat sometimes is like farting, but in spite of this, the first level is better just on the Genesis. Especially 3:58 because of sound, which sounds like flute. 3.SNES has the best sound effect in most games, especially the beat part. And the level 5 in SNES's performance is one of my favorite among these melodies.
+Кирилл Кальсин Thats right. SNES is the overall winner, due to best hardcore music, mature punching sound effect, and the bosses are taller than the other 2 crappy versions.
This is just my personal take: NES version is pretty cool, but came in 3rd out of 3 -every single track-. Genesis and SNES throughout the series took turns getting gold and silver. I think the Genesis version got more golds for me than the SNES version did. So I guess you could say Genesis is my favorite version of the soundtrack as a whole. But where the SNES shone, it -really- shone! I will give SNES this: it easily had the most umph and wow to it (despite being mufflier, as usual). :-)
Who cares? SNES may be missing some stuff in it, but it still rules. The SEGA bosses appearance look so tiny the same size as the hero characters, even for Blag he doesn't look right at all for he looks like a tiny kangaroo rat.
NES and Sega version is same, SNES got some differences and most OST is missing (Boss Themes, Character Select, Shadow Boss stage is different, last Dark Queen OST in SNES use from 2-2 Racing OST)
not just that, but it also helped alot developers make the music sound closer to there original arcade/PC ports. take street fighter 2 & earthworm jim & thunder force for example. now I don't hate nes/snes, I play games on those systems all the time. it's just that theirs something about the genesis that makes it equally match against the snes.
haha damn good guess, he did do all three. You can kinda tell by the snares and kicks he uses, sounds similar to donkey kong country. Either way, so memorable
One of my favorite games of all-time. It was the last game I bought for NES back in the day before they quit makin' 'em for that system. The Sega version is the best as far as music, gameplay and graphics. The Sega version has some of my favorite video game music ever. The SNES version was the easiest and a little too cartoonish. Definitely my least favorite of the 3.
joelawson33 Same for me. The problem is that the Snes Version had better Graphics and all but the thing is that the frame rates were bad. compared to the Genesis version. I my opinion the game is more playable on genesis than Snes because of that. Thanks Blast Prossessing :D
+joelawson33 Your clearly delusional. So what that snes is too girly for you. SNES has hardcore music, mature soundeffect, clean graphic, and the bosses are taller than the other crappy version :P
Ok I played this on genesis but then decided lets give snes a try I popped it in and was upset that the graphics, soundtrack was much better then the genesis not saying that the genesis version was bad but the snes had like a punk rock theme to it that kicked ass
+Cody Klugman I so agree. SNES has some pretty epic hardcore music, thats why SNES is the winner. Although some sega stages ones are cool, but the final stage one sadly lacks.
Кто бы что не говорил но Battletoads & Double dragon на NES цепляет своей музыкой сука:)

потому что композитор писал эту музыку именно на звуке NES

Level 3's music for the SNES is my favorite out of them all.

And the level 7 SNES for it has a final destination feel out of the other 2 consoles.
