Apple already gave us the smartphone as we know it, and Im pretty sure they could be ahead of competition. Question is, do they want to? Apple is always in control of their actions, gotta give it to them, they're smart AF. Every year since Jobs' death I keep hearing "this is it, Apple truly sucks now, they'll die", and all they do is keeping growing stronger and without being in the need of innovating, so you tell me

    The problem with going heavily to towards services is that its a lot harder to differentiate from competitors and maintaining the Apple glossy sheen is more complex when you're not wowing people with physical items that do amazing things in incredibly elegant ways.
    In short, services are just boring commodities. Apple may be setting itself up for a long death via increased short to medium term revenues here.

And the iPad was originally a FingerWorks design. Steve Jobs did not invent, program, or design a single thing Apple released. He was just a great spokesperson.

    Apple should’ve pioneered music streaming just like they pioneered the iTunes Store and giving the ability to buy music at a flat rate. They missed it big time. Spotify wouldn’t be this big if that happened. And they could’ve easily transcended into video streaming even.

    • @bruxi78230
      @bruxi78230 Год назад

      The music labels would not allow Apple a license to stream for years. It's not that they missed anything. Spotify had a streaming monopoly for years because they offered equity to the music labels. But that doesn't matter. Apple now has 80 million subs in music, in fact they have more subscribers for their services than any company on earth at over 700 million. They also offer a $30 a month package of all their 6 main services that no one else can come close to matching. Their video streaming service is $5 per month for all original shows, no catalogs of old boring stuff.
      The fact that Spotify is "big" is irrelevant. Spotify loses money almost always. They've never had a profitable full year. Apple is cash flow positive on all services except for perhaps video, which is quite new. In 2021 they made 68.4 billion in service sales with a very high gross margin of above 70%.

    "We see our future as a *media* and *services* company" is business-speak for "We are completely out of ideas, so we're clumsily chasing Netflix and Amazon way too late and without their ability to innovate." Steve Job's megalomania doomed Apple, because he eliminated anyone he suspected was competent to replace him.

    *Whoever thought Apple was going to remain on top as a hardware company doesn't understand the law of Demand and Supply.*
    *Apple products are good but their high prices mean that more people will be buying alternative products that are cheaper than the expensive ones. No matter how dedicated their fans remain, the world is filled with majority poor or mid class people and not wealthy people. A $1000 product is the equivalent of 3 months salary of so many people around this world.*
    *And Apple's biggest international market which is China, are having tonnes of fast rising alternative companies to turn to, whose products are cheaper too.*
    *So applied move to switch to service provision is not only taking advantage of the future but also saving itself from an inevitable crash. It's a brilliant move.*

    I usually enjoy your analysis but this time you're WAY off. Apple has been a service company since 2007, when Steve Jobs announced they were dropping the world "Computer" from the brand name, changing from "Apple Computer" to "Apple Inc." You entirely fail to mention the myriad of ENORMOUS services in existence since those days more than a decade before the transition you cite. Apple iTunes, App Store, iMessage, and iPhoto (now Apple Photos) are all MASSIVE service businesses. In fact, behind iPhoto was a once-giant printing bureau established by Steve Jobs in 2002 that Tim Cook recently phased out in 2018. Or the iAd in-app advertising service Tim Cook phased out in 2016. There is also the $2 billion a year anti-virus anti-malware security patch software update service. Also the Apple Card is FAR from out of nowhere. It has been on the table ever since the rollout of Apple Stores in 2001 and was supposed to debut twice now, once at the height of iTunes success and again with the original launch of Apple Pay in 2014. The issue was always finding a banking partner that would allow Apple to comply with regulators but that would allow them to innovate because of the internal assertion that if Apple was going to have a credit card, it should be distinctly Apple and carry with it unique and distinctive innovations that differentiate it from any other card in the market. Apple TV+ sounds like a new service but it really an adjunct to iTunes which grew into a movie and television service much like early NETFLIX and Amazon Prime Video. Apple TV+ in actuality reflects Apple's long delayed entry into content CREATION, making them a production studio and content creator, which is its first major move AWAY from pure services into producing original content. That's PRODUCT. They tried to stay purely in services for as long as possible because that's the heart of Apple's cash flow. The notion by you, Bloomberg, and others that Apple is somehow reinventing itself as a service company ignores the last 20 years of Apple's focus on services. The much talked-about "Apple ecosystem" is a result of that service layer across all devices. That so-called reinvention was back in 2007 not 2019. The only change that happened at the March 2019 press event was it marked the first time they did not unveil any new hardware but that does not mean Apple is going to suddenly stop making hardware. In fact, it was largely the result of internal setbacks, in particular, the cancellation of the failed AirPower wireless charging pad and related products.

      @@robertholtz Hey, not sure why @MyFriendlyPup responding as if he's me, but here's not, so ignore his attitude. Here's my response: overall, I agree with your assessment that Apple has had plenty of services over the past way before Tim Cook took over. There's a big difference, however, between a company offering services and a company being a service company. During the years you talk about, Apple's business model has remained the same: sell hardware and make some money on the side from services enhancing the functionality of said hardware. Ultimately, I don't think that the reinvention happened in 2007 or in 2019: the reinvention is a gradual process. Over the past ~10 years, first under Jobs and increasingly now under Cook, Apple is increasing its service offering. The big difference now is that Apple will (or at least should) centralize/bundle services and transform their hardware sales into a rentable service, thus completing the decade-long transformation into a service company. At the end of the day, you're right that Apple has had services for a long time; I think, however, that you underestimate just how strong their push away from hardware will be. You're right that they won't stop making hardware, but the huge difference is that they'll rent it instead of selling it. This hasn't happened yet, but I think the writing is on the wall. On a side note, thanks for being a long-time subscriber and for engaging with my content in this way, I appreciate it a lot!

      @@BusinessCasual Apple is still a tech company, just like the other 3. Just because they've gone on to expand into many areas, their new additions are extensions of their core product(s). Apple is still a computer. Google is still a search engine. Amazon a marketplace. Microsoft an operating system. Their core product did not disappear or have been replaced entirely by something completely different. Apple started transitioning away from personal computer with the iPod, the iPhone soon after, but at the core of those hardware is still the Apple operating system. Google may have dabbled with self driving cars but at the heart of it, the car is still tech-enabled. Amazon maybe venturing into movies and content creation, but they were already the walmart of the Internet so it's still fitting for them to offer shows through their marketplace. Unless they all switched industries entirely, like making ceramic vases, opening up gyms, or something, they're all still tech companies.

The beauty of doing this is that no other competitor really has the ability to match them.
