@@muhammadpasha313 Well, let's not get too carried away. Sure, there is definitely a lot more nuance than what is often shown by the average hard-line nationalist, but that doesn't mean there weren't any major divisions between the two civilizations. There are plenty of examples of these weird alliances. In the 1683 Siege of Vienna, the Ottoman Muslims were supported by the Hungarian Christians, and the Polish-Lithuanian Christians that broke the siege were reinforced by Lipka-Tatar Muslims. Does that now mean that there wasn't a clear division between the Muslims and Christians? Let's not fool ourselves. There was also the Abbasid-Frankish alliance against Al-Andalus, or the Andalusian-Byzantinian alliance against the Abbasids. These complicated alliances often happen, but don't be fooled. These were shrewd decisions, not genuine friendships. In the context of the Subcontinent, there were always bastions of Hinduism in the hills of Nepal, the mountains of the Deccan, and the valleys of Ahom. There was always a clear line between the Hindu and Muslim kingdoms, particularly for the elites. Remember, divide and conquer can only work effectively if the people are already kind of divided.
My favorite passage from my least favorite Rory Stewart book briefly tells John Malcolm’s origin story. During his Indian Civil Service exam, an East India Company director supposedly asked the 11-year-old Malcolm “Little man, what would you do if you were to meet Tipoo Sultan in Mysore tomorrow?” To which the boy replied “Do sir? I’d out wi’ me sword and cut off his ‘ead.” It shows how very different the British Empire and its mindset was from today’s UK and how much of a thorn Tipu was in the Empire’s side.
Thank you for this. I recently became aware of Tipu Sultan after reading a novel by the British fiction author, Bernard Cornwall. It's wonderful to learn how well the author knew his material - many of the details outlined here are present in a fictionalised account of his final battle with the British. Cornwall clearly respected the society and empire Tipu Sultan led as Tipu Sultan, is rendered in his chapters as very smart, highly strategic, a fierce warrior, and one who died in battle defending his domain.
@HikmaHistory Indeed I do! I have only read his Sharpe novels but the historical content in all of them is excellent. The specific book is Sharpe's Tiger
Aurangzeb was my favourite but tipu was from his line of greatness. These people carried Islam and fought for the believers, they are not recognised enough in the Muslim world today. People like tipu didn’t sell out like others later would to the British.
Aurangzeb was pro-russia, you should beware Relations with the Czardom of Russia Russian Czar Peter the Great requested Aurangzeb to open Russo-Mughal trade relations in the late 17th century. In 1696 Aurangzeb received his envoy, Semyon Malenkiy, and allowed him to conduct free trade. After staying for six years in India, and visiting Surat, Burhanpur, Agra, Delhi and other cities, Russian merchants returned to Moscow with valuable Indian goods.[157]
Lovely work, purely factual and no biased propaganda. Do a documentary about moroccan Abdelkrim El khattabi or other Amazigh history, very interesting and underrepresented on YT.
Tipu Sultan was a CRUEL and BRUTAL ruler who enslaved Indians, looted everything he could, and force-converted people, or had them killed if they refused to convert and were unable to pay the jizya (Islamic tax charged onto infidels, which gave them free revenues to build their wealth). Edward Clive (1754-1839) as Governor of Madras, bears responsibility for the defeat and death of Tipu Sultan (1750-99), the ruler of Mysore. Funny how muslim historians have tried to shift the looting claims to the British while the entire country was already looted by muslims centuries before the British were offered trade contracts by the Maharajas to persuade them to come to India.
Tipu converted 4 lakh hindus destroyed 800 temples 27 churches even dead hindus were converted and the tortures and attrocities are endless One of his letters to zaman khan states With the grace of Prophet Mohammed and Allah, almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. I think Tipu Sultan is over rated. I don't mean to deny that he gave a hard time to the British. I'm only saying is that his legacy is more superficial than real. I say this for 2 reason: - Firstly, his sphere of influence in the Indian subcontinent was pretty small Secondly, he was not the only tough opposition to the British. After the First Anglo Maratha war, the British didn't dare to attack for almost 25 years. This also applies to the Sikh Empire. They didn't wage war against the Sikhs as long as Ranjit Singh was alive. But it took a mere 10 years after his death for their territory to be lost to the British. So even if we imagine that Tipu had live for long and managed to defeat the British, he couldn't have stopped them from ultimately taking over the Indian subcontinent.
To be fair, very few South Indian kings managed to influence North Indian lands, just like most North Indian kings struggled to consolidate power in the Deccan. South Indian power and wealth comes from their location in the Indian Ocean trade.
Tipu Sultan forged a vast trading network in the Indian Ocean. He established trading depots in Omani Muscat, Ottoman Jeddah, Persian Bandar Abbas, and Burmese Pegu
Persia and Oman Like his father before him, Tipu Sultan maintained friendly relations with Mohammad Ali Khan, ruler of the Zand Dynasty in Persia. Tipu Sultan also maintained correspondence with Hamad bin Said, the ruler of the Sultanate of Oman.[71] Qing China Tipu’s and Mysore’s tryst with silk began in the early 1780s when he received an ambassador from the Qing dynasty-ruled China at his court. The ambassador presented him with a silk cloth. Tipu was said to be enchanted by the item to such an extent that he resolved to introduce its production in his kingdom. Another great Indian Muslim battle against British Invaders was the seige of Lucknow in 1857, when Indian rebels led by Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah liberated the city of Lucknow and annihilated 2,500 British soldiers.

Afghanistan After facing substantial threats from the Marathas, Tipu Sultan began to correspond with Zaman Shah Durrani, the ruler of the Afghan Durrani Empire, so they could defeat the British and Marathas. Initially, Zaman Shah agreed to help Tipu, but the Persian attack on Afghanistan's Western border diverted its forces, and hence no help could be provided to Tipu. Ottoman Empire In 1787, Tipu Sultan sent an embassy to the Ottoman capital Constantinople, to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I requesting urgent assistance against the British East India Company. Tipu Sultan requested the Ottoman Sultan to send him troops and military experts. Furthermore, Tipu Sultan also requested permission from the Ottomans to contribute to the maintenance of the Islamic shrines in Mecca, Medina, Najaf and Karbala. However, the Ottomans were themselves in crisis and still recuperating from the devastating Austro-Ottoman War and a new conflict with the Russian Empire had begun, for which Ottoman Turkey needed British alliance to keep off the Russians, hence it could not risk being hostile to the British in the Indian theatre. Due to the Ottoman inability to organise a fleet in the Indian Ocean, Tipu Sultan's ambassadors returned home only with gifts from their Ottoman brothers. Nevertheless, Tipu Sultan's correspondence with the Ottoman Empire and particularly its new Sultan Selim III continued till his final battle in the year 1799.[69]
Highly overrated. There were 4 Anglo Mysore wars. The first two were stalemates (nobody gained or lost any terrritories). The third Anglo Mysore war resulted in Tipu losing half of his kingdom, and the 4th Anglo Mysore war resulted in him getting screwed. He was no freedom fighter. He was allied to another Colonial power(the french), and was just trying to expand his kingdom at the cost of the smaller kingdoms around him.
@@mehrabalmaksud6732 Yes, personally I think the Second Anglo-Mysore War was his only chance to drive the British out. Without the help of the French the task was impossible.
The only person who fought bravely against the British while others, such as Marata and Nawabs, made treaties with the British. Tippu did not give up until the end, and he also sold his children to the British. There is no way any other ruler in India would have committed this act. This was only the case with Tipu Sultan. In a similar fashion to Netaji Bose's meeting with Hitler, Tipu established contact with Napoleon to expel the British from India. While the other Indian Kings ate, lived a lavish life, and sold their souls to the British. As a Hindu, I am ashamed with some assholes who are against Tipu.
Unfortunately videos with these types of perspectives really only fuel communalist sentiments and a division between minority/majority groups by negating the impact the atrocities of these foreigners had on the majority indigenous population. Abrahamist tendencies towards glorifying monotheistic violence as political prowess is mendacious.
@@mint8648 lol you don’t know history and probably haven’t read any actual history about him not created by marxists. Again being born in India doesn’t mean he ever saw himself as an Indian.
@@HikmaHistory from multiple Indic perspectives, his own writings see that he viewed himself as better than and different from his subjects, that his father Hyder Ali is alternately claimed to be Quraysh, Osmania, Persian shows he didn’t want association with his birth land; that he enforced persian as his court language (in South India of all places); that he planned to divide India with Zaman Shah and Iran; that his mother identified herself as Persian. Genetically probably there was a south Asian woman in there somewhere (which is it’s own complicated history with regards to female agency in intereligious clashes) but by his own words and actions he didn’t perceive himself as such, and most of his actions today would be perceived as traitorous; a la the invitation to France to fight the Marathas and British, the invitation to Turkey to invade the North, the destruction of several major temples, the massacres of around 90,000 people (Hindus, Jains, Buddhists), titling himself as the Shah of Bharat (a completely alien term that imposes foreign rule over Bharat). I think so many things can point to the facts that neither did he see himself as Indian or behave with an Indian moral framework, but he never acted in the interest of the idea of India and aligned himself with the foreign invaders (ie the Mughals, who incidentally while being born in India saw themselves as Turks and Persians and mercilessly massacred mixed family members so they couldn’t take power).
This video inspired me to have this weird, maybe crazy, but still amazing what-if idea. What if Tipu Sultan reached out to Catherine the Great for help in the war against the British influence in India. This might ended up helping her with her foreign policy in long term. After all, she is remembered greatly by many things but foreign policy is not one of them. At least, according to her grandson, Tsar Nicolas I. Plus, Catherine the Great always wanted to gain access to trade with India. So I think that this will not only helped her foreign policy but also achieved one of her goals during her time as the ruler of Russia. And I guess this is where Alaska became an important strategic location for Russia. With a fleet directly constructed and ported at Alaska, the Russian naval forces can directly come down to the Indian subcontinent to assist Tipu Sultan one way or another. At the very least, distracting the British fleet and forcing the British troops in India to fight wars on two fronts. I have no idea how will this turned out for India because this war is most likely eventually become part of the global war that is the Napoleonic Wars like in our timeline.
Tipu Sultan did reach out to the Ottomans for help against the British. You know why that help never came? Because the Ottomans had to concentrate on war with Russia
@@mint8648 Not to mention that the Ottoman Empire was also Britain's ally as well. So the point is why did Tipu Sultan do not reach out to Russia for help.
Catherine the Great did have grand foreign policy aims, to retake ottoman lands and create a Greek speaking revival of the Roman empire with her son or grandson (can't remember which) Constantine as it's monarchy, it's why she kept giving Ukrainian cities Greek names. She also split up Poland. Yeah she wouldn't get involved in India, logistical difficulties, her troops would have to walk their though multiple hostile states which Russia wouldn't conquer till the next century, then Afghanistan, then through India and then fight a much better quality army to boot, half the army would die before it even got to central Asia given the numbers they'd have to support out in the steppes. A war would get be an opportunity for the British to burn her navy, then become paranoid and strengthen their position in India even more, the suggestion of the possibility was far more valuable than actually trying it, as it gave some leverage in negotiations with the British to both the sultan and tsarinia.
Tipu has a lot in common with Mehmed II, the biggest difference is that Tipu did not have conquest ambitions This is very enlightening, and the British were very obsessed with India, wow
The rockets mentioned were incorporated into the British Army after Tipu was defeated as Congreave Rockets, Tipus army included a contingent of French soldiers and officers, that and the nearby former French concessions were why he had a relationship with the French. Wellington in later life said his best battle was not Waterloo but Assaye, fought in India against the Maratha confederacy.
That’s because the British achieved victory at Assaye despite being significantly outnumbered, whereas at Waterloo, his army were more numerous than the French
While I agree that historical figures should be seen with nuance there is some historical basis to the allegations made against Tipu Sultan. There are evidences of persecution of Hindus and Christians. It is argued that he only did that in enemy territories but it is persecution nevertheless. Furthermore I don't know if he can truly be considered to be an Indian freedom fighter. Even from this video itself it seems obvious that he saw himself more as Muslim than Indian. Also his struggle against the British might be somewhat overrated. He did indeed give the British a tough time but so did the Marathas and the Sikhs. Basically... Was Tipu Sultan a significant historical figure? Yes. Did he fight the British? Yes. Can he be counted as a freedom fighter? Somewhat dubios. Was he a benevolent ruler? It's complicated. Did he persecute non-Muslims? Somewhat yes. Was he exceptionally evil? By the standards of his time I'd say not really. Was he a hero or a villain from an Indian perspective? A bit of both and also neither at the same time. One of the more complicated historical figures I'd say.
Oooh controversial calling Tipu Indian…but I think this was made more from an Abrahamic appeasement effort with relation to Indian History and modern global politics.
Can you please consider doing a video on the subject of the Nawabs of Awadh? An Iranian Shia dynasty from Nishaphur that ruled for quite some time in India.

Generally, I love your work. But in this case not so much. Much more research had to be done before going into the making of this. I'm from Mysore and I'm proud of Tippu for many of his qualities, particularly with the valor he fought with the British. But unfortunately find a lot of discrepancies too in this video. Many of the reforms & administration practices that you mentioned are originally done by the Wodeyars - The Maharajas Of Mysore. KRS Dam was built by Sir M. Vishveshwarayya under the leadership and finances of Maharaja Krishna Raja Wonderyar the Fourth, hence the name Krishna Raja Sagara. You should also have mentioned how crookedly Tippu took over the Kingdom of Mysore and imprisoned the Maharani & her young son. I also know several families who were the descendants of the Kodavas and Mangalorean Catholics who were captured and tortured by the Tippu. I hail from a family who saved many Catholics of Mangalore region who had been under the Tippu's persecution. If I start mentioning the atrocities of Tippu, then I can go on and on. So next time when you're making a video of some historical personality please make sure you have done your thorough research.

In most cases at that time and for a LONG time, the British were unbeatable in the end.... They would adapt and conquer plus they had leaders like WELLINGTON!
That's a fantasy. The Afghans were constantly harassed by the Sikhs in Punjab, preventing them from securing a forward-base to conquer further into India (and their empire started crumbling even before Ahmad Shah Durrani died).

I’d out wi’ me sword and cut off his ‘ead.”
It shows how very different the British Empire and its mindset was from today’s UK and how much of a thorn Tipu was in the Empire’s side.
Awesome video had no idea about this guy, thank you!

I've seen Cornwell's novels and often thought if they would be interesting enough to read - so you recommend that novel?
@HikmaHistory Indeed I do! I have only read his Sharpe novels but the historical content in all of them is excellent. The specific book is Sharpe's Tiger

I think Tipu Sultan is over rated. I don't mean to deny that he gave a hard time to the British. I'm only saying is that his legacy is more superficial than real. I say this for 2 reason: -
Firstly, his sphere of influence in the Indian subcontinent was pretty small
Secondly, he was not the only tough opposition to the British.
The British learned their rocket technology from Mujahid Tipu Sultan (Rahimaullah) the tiger of mysore.
The Britishers were simply amazing
Persia and Oman
Like his father before him, Tipu Sultan maintained friendly relations with Mohammad Ali Khan, ruler of the Zand Dynasty in Persia. Tipu Sultan also maintained correspondence with Hamad bin Said, the ruler of the Sultanate of Oman.[71]
Qing China
Tipu’s and Mysore’s tryst with silk began in the early 1780s when he received an ambassador from the Qing dynasty-ruled China at his court. The ambassador presented him with a silk cloth. Tipu was said to be enchanted by the item to such an extent that he resolved to introduce its production in his kingdom. He sent a return journey to China, which returned after twelve years.[72]

Afghanistan
After facing substantial threats from the Marathas, Tipu Sultan began to correspond with Zaman Shah Durrani, the ruler of the Afghan Durrani Empire, so they could defeat the British and Marathas. Initially, Zaman Shah agreed to help Tipu, but the Persian attack on Afghanistan's Western border diverted its forces, and hence no help could be provided to Tipu.
Ottoman Empire
In 1787, Tipu Sultan sent an embassy to the Ottoman capital Constantinople, to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I requesting urgent assistance against the British East India Company.

The only person who fought bravely against the British while others, such as Marata and Nawabs, made treaties with the British. Tippu did not give up until the end, and he also sold his children to the British. There is no way any other ruler in India would have committed this act. This was only the case with Tipu Sultan. While the other Indian Kings ate, lived a lavish life, and sold their souls to the British. As a Hindu, I am ashamed with some assholes who are against Tipu.

Tipu was a foreigner? How so
@@HikmaHistory from multiple Indic perspectives, his own writings see that he viewed himself as better than and different from his subjects, that his father Hyder Ali is alternately claimed to be Quraysh, Osmania, Persian shows he didn’t want association with his birth land; that he enforced persian as his court language (in South India of all places); that he planned to divide India with Zaman Shah and Iran; that his mother identified herself as Persian.
Excellent video
Glad you liked it!
I heard and read he was a hero but the way you portrayed him in this video does not emphasize enough his heroic character I think.
Brilliant!!
I have no idea how will this turned out for India because this war is most likely eventually become part of the global war that is the Napoleonic Wars like in our timeline.
nice
Tipu Sultan did reach out to the Ottomans for help against the British. You know why that help never came? Because the Ottomans had to concentrate on war with Russia
@@mint8648 Not to mention that the Ottoman Empire was also Britain's ally as well. So the point is why did Tipu Sultan do not reach out to Russia for help.
😂😂
Just Imagine 😂😂
Tipu has a lot in common with Mehmed II, the biggest difference is that Tipu did not have conquest ambitions
This is very enlightening, and the British were very obsessed with India, wow
Well Tipu tried conquering Travancore and Kerala
The rockets mentioned were incorporated into the British Army after Tipu was defeated as Congreave Rockets, Tipus army included a contingent of French soldiers and officers, that and the nearby former French concessions were why he had a relationship with the French. Wellington in later life said his best battle was not Waterloo but Assaye, fought in India against the Maratha confederacy.
That’s because the British achieved victory at Assaye despite being significantly outnumbered, whereas at Waterloo, his army were more numerous than the French
@@wkhan5 and at Waterloo even if Napoleon had won there were other armies in the area so he was doomed anyway.

I also know several families who were the descendants of the Kodavas and Mangalorean Catholics who were captured and tortured by the Tippu. I hail from a family who saved many Catholics of Mangalore region who had been under the Tippu's persecution. If I start mentioning the atrocities of Tippu, then I can go on and on.

but sadly he was betrayed.
Very edumacational bideo
It was my ancestor who defeated him, and took his tiger back to Britain. Sorry folks, wasn't me ✌️ Enjoyed your video though.
Tipu was a mass murdering, raping, pillaging, force-converting Muslim tyrant as fas as India's Hindus are concerned. I'd rather be under colonial British rule than under Tipu. Also, Tipu did not fight for India, he fought for his own power. I am from the the region in India which is was erstwhile Travancore kingdom who not only repelled Tipu but also made him a cripple. In my language Ti-Pu backwards it Pu-Ti meaning dog lol and we have the custom of naming dogs as Tipu.
🇵🇰🇧🇩🇮🇳 All in one
He is a muslim not indian..
What is the difference?
He was both 😂 an Indian Muslim ❤❤
Masha Allah ❤
All alliances against one another ,like NATO invitation to India today 😅
Atleast try to show both sides of history don’t promote biased narrative all of your videos are pro islamic
what do you expect from swine?
Krishnaraja sagara dam commissioned by tipu.. wat a joke
Plz make videos on Ummayad and Abasside Khilafate
The one and only tiger of a maysoor💪🏽
Love learning about India history where it is about parts of region and not as a whole. Thanks
Tipu, the tiger, and, when he fell, it's down to the, Marathas, French sponsored, Lorre save us doing Allright for a bit, then Assaye
Dang....KRS Dam was built after Tipu. There is some evidence that Tipu had built Kannambadi Kate that is where the current KRS dam is built. But not sure... just check your history before making videos.
Irreverent of many wrong info...Tipu is a patroitic warrior, modernized weaponry, and single handedly defended our land against the foreign invader.
