Met Paul Weller early 90s. He was driving a Help the Aged van full of Grannies to a Church "do" in Basingstoke and then he got them settled down, pouring out the tea etc. Volunteer work. That's what makes a true star.
Community service for a little bit of coke he had on him....

You can see how excited he is to be singing the song with PW. That's how good Weller is. That's how good the song was. That's how great The Jam will always be.
Loved this song since I was a kid. I'm 64 now.

Loved Paul weller growing up when I was a child. Having older brother's listening to The Jam Ect. & I still love him now. Saw him in July @ Warwick Castle. Got to say he was fantastic.

As in all the Jam songs played by Paul Weller's solo band the rhythm seems to proceed with the handbrake on, it totally lacks that angry and idiosyncratic dynamic typical of the Foxton / Buckler duo

I love Kelly Jones, but you realise how critical Paul Weller's vocals and energy are to this song when you hear Jones sing. He is lost in the whole thing, whereas Weller bosses it.
You had too much herbal tea fella? I grew up with The Jam however, Jones held himself perfectly in delivering a classic.

Jones is woefully out of tune and ruins the dynamic of Weller's vocals. Yes Paul, you do miss Bruce............

I don’t think Wellers ever forgot where he came from but granted can’t compare with the devastation caused by the miner strikes and mine closures.
@@Robcatist difficult one..on a serious note [our scooter club tried about 12 years ago to get weller to our ride out weekender on Anglesey.. a big no..he wanted 90 k to do the weekend and 5 star hotel in bangor[do they exist up here[ in the end his brother in arms mr foxton [from the jam[ done it with nev staples[the specials[I have to say both were mind blowingly superb[and all for under ten grand..[in fact ive never seen the northern soul so empty when eton rifles was blasting...

@rdg rdg people passing themselves off as "working class heroes" (copied from that well known middle class fake John Lennon) & write songs against the elite private school system and then up sending their own kids to them kind of gives the impression of style no substance - a bit like his solo work after the Style council split up.For sure people can change - but it adds to my belief that deep down all the working classes want to do is be middle class.

My reply covers a variety of areas: (a) hypocrisy - particularly among the monied working class (b) the inherent conservatism of the working class (c) the lack of anything aspirational of being working class in spite of so much talk about having all this imaginary pride.
