The police saturated the area for days with acrid tear gas , everyone was wearing handkerchiefs soaked in vinegar to try to get relief from the gas which burned the eyes and caused lung problems.
At that time the unemployment rate of Derry youths was at 40% and frustration and anger at the Unionist dominated parliament led to a campaign for Civil Rights as not every adult was entitled to a vote while a Unionist businessman or property owner could have multiple votes , this gerrymandering meant that a Unionist minority in Derry controlled a largely nationalist population and constantly worked against the better interests of the community , the placing of the University of Ulster in Unionist Coleraine was a prime example of the Unionist apartheid state , the Derry youths by 1969 had enough of being discriminated against and living lives of deprivation, the attitude was if the state is going to ignore me as a citizen then the state is not fit for purpose and must fall , this began the “ Troubles”.

It makes it look like this all happened in one day. It started on August 12 when the Apprentice Boys parade took place. The army were called in on the afternoon of August 14.

The Irish should ever have fought among themselves. The Brit establishment used that division against you. In the meantime over here in Australia the protestant and Catholic descendants of Irish immigrants got along just fine. I know, because I am one of those descendants. If we could get along, so could you.

Crazy scenes British and Irish people never back down from a fight, (in fact Irish fighting Irish ridiculous) part of their intrenched heritage, history shows wars can last decades, very disappointing, (paramilitary splinter groups & real terrorism👎👎👎) the Irish/UK govt should have negotiated a peace deal, strategic hand back & new effective govt process. In fact for decades the Irish Govt really wanted no part in the troubled north. Being Australian, I say get the British troops back home and get/help the Irish Govt to step up and sort out their troubled north. Let the Irish people live in peace.
