Just started watching to keep me company while I practice thumbnail sketches. I’m taking a level two drawing class and this was the first skill he’s teaching us.
I love your tutorials, so thank you. One I watched yesterday reminded us to always finish a painting. I had one I did two days ago and when i had to stop to let the paint dry, i was quite dissatisfied with it. However, I went back to it today and finished it, and i am quite pleased! It is impressionist style, so it's not really my cup of tea as I prefer more sedate paintings, but i still like it and appreciate why that sort of painting should be done to improve your techniques. Thank you for your very sage advice!
Yup these are mistakes I’ve been making. Your videos are so helpful and are a mainstay of my progress. Your humour cracks me up - thanks for all your help and support.
Thank you Michele! I laughed about the direction of your stroke (grass with stubby tops -- lol). I had never thought about it, but it makes a huge difference!
On days I don't have time for a full painting I'll do a thumbnail to remind me. There's less detail. Using it in composition is great 👍. This is going on view later as well. There are so many valuable tips I'll need to do a replay at a later date. Thank you ❤
This tutorial is so helpful, I make everyone of those mistakes Michelle, from drawing an horizon line with a ruler to drawing my grasses with downward strokes.. Thankyou so much. You are a brilliant teacher.
Always good information provided in most usable way. I’ve avoided putting buildings in my drawings because I ended up with so many vanishing point lines that I absolutely confused myself about where the actual walls went. I think I can do it the way you demonstrated
Just what I need thank you! I'll look up your course. On a different note. I've had my eye on your adorable frog ring you wear often. It is adorable. Makes me smile. Thanks Michelle!
I think I have made most of these mistakes at one time or another. You can always redo a painting and call your flubbed up painting a color study. Live and learn! I think the one I do the most is not doing thumbnail sketches enough as well as a thorough color study.
Very useful tips will definitely work these into my work. I find as I get further into a drawing my pencil pressure increases. I have creased many pages of sketch book paper in a single stroke. You would think constantly reminding myself would do the trick but the hand stays defiant.
I had set today aside to do some art, but procrastinating over what to do. This covered more than one subject I have trouble with, so time we'll spent. I do love the trick using a strip of paper to get the right size for objects. Will be using that. I also have had lots of problems with getting my paths and waterways looking natural in the landscape. This will certainly help. Thank you for your 'cat approved' tutorials. I really like them
I haven't made any of these mistakes in a long time, but what I never thought about is taking a line out to a corner. I never thought about using an embossing tool, but that is a good idea. I've done the Bob Ross style of painting for years so I just painted everything and haven't drawn or used any kind of pencil since high school, so all of these colored pencil tips are really useful. Thanks for this.
My rivers and pathways were always defying gravity until I found your videos! Plus, I always forget to do a thumbnail sketch - great reminder! Wonderful example of when 'breaking the rule' on the horizon line placement works well. So many excellent tips in this video and I always need a reminder of them all, thank you! Hi Gimlet, good to see you :)
Your very helpful advice delivered in your charming voice is so inspiring. My not making a thumbnail sketch has always resulted in problem compositions--now I will ALWAYS do them. And you tip for using a paper helper for determining relative size of objects in a landscape was brilliant. I'll watch this video several times to ensure that all of your tips are in my Art File in my head. Thank-you!
Great reminder, and yes, I have made some of these mistakes. Especially not doing thumbnail sketches (I don't think I've ever done one), and I always have trouble with my paths and rivers, and now I see why. Oh, and hello to Gimlet!
Hi Michele Good to see you. Thank you so much for these tips. Yeah I made all these mistakes. Now for my big confession. I just did a seascape/ beachscape painting and it was well... Your sin worthy of a lifetime imprisonment. 😅😅😅😅 This seascape I'm afraid was these waves lapping up on a beach. Not too bad you might say. But I was trying to make these ripples on the water and somewhere along the line this big acryllic lump was stuck in the middle of the water. Nomatter what I did with it to try to blend it out it would not budge. Well I tried to make a boat out of this big lump with 2 people in it and now it looks these two in it are heading for a crash into the mountain.! Because I had to direct the bloody boat toward this great big lump thats supposed to be a mountain. You could argue the one steering the boat is a lousy driver. That's my excuse!. I blame it on him. But the way the lump of white acryllic was facing I couldn't make the boat turn any other way. 😅😅😅. Well I tried! Unless he's well able to steer it around the mountain or better still up on the beach. Either way this is looks like a disaster waiting to happen.😅😅😅 I think it would be hard labour along with life imprisonment if they crash on either place. They might be clearing the beach just that little bit too early! . So far they haven't moved any further so I might be left out on bail. 😅😅😅. I wouldn't mind but I was happy enough with the rest of it and it seemed a shame to throw it away. So I tried to disguise this nasty lump into a boat. With 2 nutters inside it! Maybe I should try again. They were coming very near to the beach. Maybe I should have cut my losses and dumped it. 😅. That said. A thumbnail would have been a really good idea but this white lump was very accidental so not too sure even a thumbnail would have done for this one. It was just one of those things. Not too sure the beach was a good idea either to be honest. The two together were a bit too much. Would you have been able to get round it. And what way. Aside from calling emergency services. 😂😂😂😂 I think if I left the beach bit out it might have looked better. It was too much water and very little beach. Maybe it should have been one or the other. Now that I look at it again it was a bit too much. By mistakes we learn eh? . Thanks for these tips Michele. Glad to see Gimlet he's gorgeous. Send him big hugs and kisses for me. Much love and God bless both of you. Susan xxxx❤❤❤❤
Thanks for so many useful ideas, especially how to get the angles correct. I've had trouble with that, in fact on a landscape I'm working on right now. You are the queen!
Thanks Michelle. I like to put streams in my landscape paintings but they always looked off. I knew the water needs to look horizontal but I’d not get the curves correct. At some point I’d have a section that would come down vertically and it would look off and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. Now I know.
Such relevant info! I think about a lot of these things when drawing and painting. Your easy explanations and quick tips are such a great help. - I’m guilty of trying to be too precise and definitely need to loosen up my lines. Great stuff, Michele! Thanks for all the time and energy you put into these videos.
How I enjoy listening to your tips! I have made many of those mistakes. Being a more scientific minded person, I use(d) a ruler. No longer. I used to believe that the whites of clouds were white. I forget about grasses being shorter in the background, etc. Thanks for the care and time you put into the explanations.
Hi Michelle, I definitely make some of these mistakes, but I am learning more as I go, especially with instructors such as you to learn from! I think the Landscape course looks very interesting, but I would like to know how long each module is and when (e.g. what day etc.) it will be available. Is it pre-recorded etc. I don't use Facebook so would it be possible to communicate with you outside that format. Thank you!
You can always email me with specific questions at art@michelewebber.com Modules vary, the course is static, meaning you can access for lifetime, stop, start and drop in and out, although I may at some future point add extra or bonus modules (you will get these free). Each module contains downloadable PDF's and a video to watch, with photos and exercises, usually between 15 and 30 minutes. If you click though to the sales page you will get an idea of total video time and the number of lessons, pdf's etc. There's also a FAQ section at the bottom of the page :-)
Love the video. Thanks a lot I hv ordered stonehenge aqua 300gsm cotton paper from jackson's art supplies. Just wanted to know your thoughts on that if possible. Is it a good quality paper? It sats block so something new for me. Thx
From your lesson on erasing pencil from watercolour, can I ask how to erase the draw down image from the graphite paper, it almost feels like old style carbon paper. Thanks Norman
Hi Norman, graphite is what modern pencils are made of so should erase in the same manner. Once the sheets are no longer new they won't make such a strong line.
Im guilty of rivers and paths leading to heaven and my distant buildings on a hill are too big. Your hair looks extra pretty today. Your video finished just in time for me to feed my dogs.
If you copy the angles of the things you are looking at the perspective will always be correct. You don't have to curve to make it lay flat, sometimes just a lower angle works :-)

My day is made!!! You showed us your CAT❤❤❤
THANK YOU for all the very useful tips. Watching this again to get the lessons learned firmly into my head
Ah wonderful! I love your paper measurement to give relative size!! Simple and so speedy with no fractions to calculate!!
Yup these are mistakes I’ve been making. Your videos are so helpful and are a mainstay of my progress. Your humour cracks me up - thanks for all your help and support.
Glad you like them!
Hi from the North Essex coast. A complete novice scribbler here, am currently binge watching your videos, so much to learn.
Hello! Thanks for watching :-)

Another great video Michele, thanks very much 😊
Always a good review, especially when I've not been painting for a while. Love your videos - and your gorgeous cat!
Thank you! 😊

Oh dear, I lost count of all my mistakes 😅 What a brilliant tutorial, Michele, Thank you. Enjoy your Friday 😊
Thank you 😊

Thank you 🙏 I love frogs 💚
Oh not doing a thumbnail sketch is often my downfall. I have a tendency to dive straight in. Great advice which I hope to remember! Thank you.
Brilliant!! Answered so many problems and questions. Thank you

I will kiss Gimlet when safe to do so :-) Your acrylic boat story is very funny, I'm sure you learned a lot though!!

Thank you for sharing your talent... very helpful for all of us ..
I love your channel because you're pro cat and anti math. Not a lot of art teachers have the courage to say this so clearly.
Thank you! 😊
Great tips! These will help me a lot. Your flower drawing video helped me tremendously. Love seeing Kitty! Please pass on a hug ❤️
Thank you! Will do!

Thanks for watching Becky!

I don’t take the time to properly plan my watercolor painting. From now on, minis come first.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you!
I struggle with making paths/roads/rivers look flat, will practice your tips and 🤞 improvement!
You are so detailed and so interesting to listen too. Love cats too!
Thank you! 😊
This was a great video, Michele. Thanks for all of the tips-so helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
This is spot on. Thank you!
Very informative, thank you.
#1 is my #1 mistake. Thanks for the encouragement to make more thumbnails. Great video!
You're very welcome!
Great tutorial and nails/colour !
Thanks!
Gimlet! What a star! :) Thanks for this one. I've made most of these mistakes!
You're very welcome!

I hv ordered stonehenge aqua 300gsm cotton paper from jackson's art supplies.
Just wanted to know your thoughts on that if possible.
Is it a good quality paper?
It sats block so something new for me.
Thx
I've heard good things but haven't tried it myself 🙂

Hi Norman, graphite is what modern pencils are made of so should erase in the same manner. Once the sheets are no longer new they won't make such a strong line.
Awesome video
The first line and wash I did has a street shooting straight up to the sky.
Mistake number 11. Ive tried drawing a pier that goes into the distance, but I can't get it right. It seems to be standing up
Im guilty of rivers and paths leading to heaven and my distant buildings on a hill are too big. Your hair looks extra pretty today. Your video finished just in time for me to feed my dogs.
Thanks very much, hi doggies 😊
What if you are trying to portray a straight path?
If you copy the angles of the things you are looking at the perspective will always be correct. You don't have to curve to make it lay flat, sometimes just a lower angle works :-)
Your cat looks just like my Tibby Sausage 🐈⬛
There are no mistakes. Just "happy accidents" 😊
❤

I always find the instructional part valuable. However, I find the constant movement of fingers and colored nails in the frame annoying.
Thanks for your feedback. I shall remove them immediately. The fingers I mean 😁
All you need is astygmatism, like me…all lines are slightly curved!
I have that, and varifocals :-)
