That was a fun race to watch and as a rower myself I'm 6'5" and 190, so it's interesting to see how to win races with this background. Just wondering to get a better perspective... around where is your 2k?
This video proves that ultimately fitness is king. If you have a guy from whatever sport being able to make 400W per hour, there little skill needed when you're at the front and everyone is way behind you. This happened recently at our local crits in SoCal, some Triathlete came in and won ALL the last Cat 5 races and when he upgraded to 4, he won is first 2 of them before the season got shut down. In one race, he fell on the first turn, caught up and led.
So frustrating that British Cycling doesn’t allow cameras in races...would love to share footage like this from the UK (minus the massive rocks of course!). Thanks for sharing the fan footage and for the awesome tips for all the racing community 🤙
You can't get permission to ride somewhere like this without signing an indemnity form and thus your right to sue for damages/injury compensation. You could initiate a lawsuit and try to get around it, but it is incredibly unlikely to be anything more than a waste of time and money as a judge would just say that you've accepted the risk by choosing to participate.
@@155Michel I don't disagree as it definitely seems this event is a serious injury away from being cancelled or changing venues (and not a course I'd want to ride at speed in a group). I'm just saying there's unlikely to be legal repercussions.
Well, even those waivers to participate are not a sure get out of jail free card, if the place selected can be shown to be a extremely poor choice and dangerous. This has happened many times with other situations for instance in theme parks, yet, lawsuits are successful. Anyway, very poor choice of course. Naturally bike racers are good sports, and would most likely not want to sue, as most crashes are just scratches. But if someone passed away, believe me, that family will be seeking redress.
Doesnt have good sprinting power? The dude hit 1,000 multiple times with a 1,200+ at one point and that probably wasnt a 100% push up that hill when he did it lol. I get what you mean, since 1200 isnt "fantastic" for 6 foot 4 giant. But its enough to win cat 5s for sure. Great video, great race, thanks for the commentary and share!
As Jeff said, as a rower he'd have great VO2 and anaerobic power (30s to a few minutes), but probably sub-par neuromuscular (1-15s) power for a guy his size. A smaller guy like Jeff may well have higher peak power, but this guy would almost definitely have a higher 1-6min power, and the ability to repeat high power surges like the 800-1000W he did here. A majority of rowers compete at the 2km distance, which takes 6-8mins depending on the discipline (single/double/pair/quad/four/eight). That means they spend a LOT of time doing anaerobic, VO2, and threshold training, but with less emphasis on the really short and really sharp effort of a 5-15s sprint (although it's obviously still trained and sees a lot of carryover gains). This makes sense, considering that the highest power portion of a rowing race is at the start when they need to get up to speed and settle into their race tempo, while the end is most often a 1-2min gradual ramping of pace culminating in a maximal 10-20 strokes, rather than going as easy as possible till the last moment before a maximal neuromuscular effort like in a crit.
yeah as the other guy said, but it's power to weight ratio, power numbers don't matter. This guy might be 80kg and only doing 1000w which is average. I'm a 55-60kg rider and I do 900w and thats pretty good around 15-16 w/kg sprint.
@@albr4 I wouldn't say "bad" but yours is truly outstanding/exceptional for someone your size. Borderline pro tour w/kg. Sounds like your built like a mini version of Caleb Ewen.
This is exactly why I rarely race. Someone will always be in the Cat 4 field who can average around 1,000 watts for what seems like forever after attacking. I realize there isn't a good way for USA Cycling to do something about it, but it just isn't fun for the rest of us.
@Kyle I have fun on Zwift races. The B cat works out well for me. On the road even after years of training and raising my FTP 40-50 watts I still get dropped. I do still try, it just isn't fun.
This was my 3rd race ever and as soon as I can I'll upgrade. The new rules are actually really good since they have mandator upgrades so people can't stay at the bottom forever. Hopefully it makes your races more fun!
Nice video! Imagine now cyclists rowing boats hahaha Miss the old days on my city that all years we have Crit Races. Now its only MTB, i think now Brazil is the Dirt Country :P
Those guys are taking both hands off the bars and sitting straight just after the finish line, dangerous, stupid and doesn't look cool as they might think, hopefully they don't have to crash to learn that they shouldn't do that (Edited because of grammar)
@leahcim38 I think it's different, I feel like you mean when we see pro cyclists celebrating a win, of course they take their hands off the bars for a second or two but riding more than 500 meters without touching the bars after a finish when not only are you tired but you are going along other tired riders I'm not against people developing the skill of riding without using hands but I don't think that is the moment to ride like that for that long after a race
@leahcim38 thanks for explaining your perspective of the matter, I was just explaining what "cat 5 salute" meant, I've seen lots of accident's because of inexperienced riders who decide to take their hands of the bars at the wrong moment, can happen to anyone specially after a hard sprint, that's all
Wow, those rocks around the course look like they’re just waiting to collect collarbones or perhaps even teeth. I can’t see Alan Atwood green-lighting such a dangerous course.
I've seen a lot of bike races over the years. I don't know why, but lower category racers like taking their hands off the bars immediately after the finish and it sometimes causes a crash. The only person allowed to post up is the winner.
They're no more dangerous than telephone poles, mail boxes, retaining walls and trees. Granted, there are a lot of rocks on this course, but take a look at other courses. I think the fact that the poles, boxes, walls, and trees are a foot or two on the other side of a concrete curb fools people into thinking they're not dangerous.
I'd actually argue the opposite - if an elite rower is introduced to cycling (as opposed to an elite athlete of a different sport) there's a significant amount of grace in power, as that is the very core of rowing. Technical descending though is a different story!
Jesus. this is easily the worst "crit" course I've ever seen. As noted below, it's not a crit course, it's a bike path with boulders and cones lol. Or a fatality factory.......
That’s not the cat 5 salute.
Crashing out the whole field in the last corner is the cat 5 salute.
This is LITERALLY the best comment below any cycling video i´ve ever seen! Thank you for that
Brutal... but true.
boulders on the side of the course are scary
I know, right? I've seen enough guys harmlessly slide out of a course after a crash...not the case here!
Disaster waiting to happen.
Agreed. One touch of wheels could be fatal. Not a safe course at all.
@@ReVoltaire 100%. Those rocks don't move a millimeter. Broken bones for sure or worse.
Then just maybe dont do stupid shit near them. The rocks arent dangerous, but riding recklessly is.

You are correct sir.

Looks a little dangerous course to me, with all those rocks at the side. I wouldn't wanna crash there.
Very dangerous
Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. Ridiculously dangerous.

@Kleiner Helfer its someone who goes fast on a manual boat

Jesse Vernon The shimano camera might be a decent option.

Congrats on the solo win attack! I'd be pretty sketched out with the course with sharp rocks and water on the side lol.
