He switches back and forth from following the drums to go full yolo by himself. I think he also likes to stand out and this is one of the ways to not get buried in the mix.
I use a simulation of an amp called Ampeg SVX. But before that I play the bass through a preamp called "Hartke HA2500". Then comes the pedals "BBE Sonic Maximizer" and finally "MXR dyna comp".

I would certainly prefer one with all the instruments, if it exists, but anything would make me happy (and in GP format would make me quadruple happy, as the sync with the beat comes in handy). It looks like GP in your videos because of the moving green line.
It's mostly the bass and not a special effect. You need new strings, a perfectly set-up string height and an almost straight neck. This makes it that there's a little bit of metal rattling but not too much. I had it done professionally to my bass, you should too. It's time-consuming to do it yourself and you may need to sand some frets and the nut.
