I am not interested in having a debate about this sort of topic. I despise use of the word "savage," "primitive," "superstition." In my classes I forbid the use of the word "tribe." These are not tribal people or primitive people, they are people just like you and me. I have been working and living among these people for 42 years, and I respect them, honor them, and love them for their wonderful hospitality, generosity, creativity, and for their ability to overcome a hostile environment.

"I forbid the use of the word "tribe."" In any context? Even in Europe after the barbarian there was a transition from their tribal chiefdom to feudal fiefs. I never figured the acknowledgement of tribes or tribal organisation to be degradation...

Imagine what life would be like in America if we had to deal with Guinea worm, river blindness (Onchoserciasis), malaria, and liver flukes (Schistosomiasis). These are people to be admired and respected, not to denigrate with vicious and nasty names.

This is wonderful! I've been reading from your book for a research project on dance in Burkina Faso, because the professor I'm working with this semester is from there. This culture is brilliant and I've loved learning about it from him. So great to actually see footage of the masks!

wow!!!i just went to see the Bwa masks at the VMFA. while they’re very interesting to look at there’s just so much of the actual art involved that can’t be appreciated in a museum setting, they are meant to be a part of a performance and the artists’ design choices in the masks reflect that. The performance and the masks are inseparably tied. It really brings it to life for me, thanks so much.
Edit/ there is one mask that was of particular interest to me, I’m not sure whether it’s unique or if it’s generally included in these dances. It was a serpent mask with a huge long piece protruding from the head, according to the museum the gyrating dance the wearer performs makes it seem to come to life. I actually found this video trying to find something like that. Apparently it is from a story about a snake saving a man by hiding him from enemies. Do you know anything about this??

the colors used seemed artificial,.. and plastic. what is going on? How authentic was this?

+zizwe allette The colors for the costumes are BASF dyes from Germany. That is TOTALLY authentic. How do YOU measure "authentic"? They have been using imported dyes for about forty years.

These people dont deal with disease stop spreading lies they are majority healthy more than those living here in the states! And they are very tribal to the bone. They don't go unidentified like those in the west or by the name of calling themselves black. These ppl have a name a tribe a house of their ancestors so respect that!!!!
