"eyes like sinking ships" also translates to danger. she can't fall in because she sees it's not safe. you can't see in a sinking ship and still go on it.
I think the repetition of the intro means that it all just starts again. It's like a hopeless crush and she knows that. But, she just can't stop picturing herself with the protagonist. Then, she comes to the conclusion that it will never be. But his eyes are so inviting, but I don't like a gold rush and so on. It's like she is trapped in her fantasy and every time she breaks out of it she thinks about his inviting eyes. It's like she has an inner monologue if she should jump in or not... oh I love that song.
girl your analysis and that cute tea cup make my morning 10x better 💞 gold rush is one of my absolute favorites from evermore. the things taylor's describing with the lyrics are just so sad and so real. that feeling when you're mesmerized by somebody and you can only to see them twinkle from afar. and then you see everyone around you, and you know that they feel the same things that you do. that feeling when you're admiring someone so bright, while you're just a part of the crowd. (not me taking this song personally or anything 🏃🏻♀️💨) also i'd like to think that the love interest here is the mirrorball ball person. just because mirrorball is talking about someone "shimmering beautiful" looking at a person in the crowd. and gold rush is someone in the crowd looking at a person who's "gleaming, twinkling" lol bye 🙈
omg tysm!! 😊✨ i really love this song too! in my top 3 for sure! and yes i agree, she illustrates that very specific feeling so perfectly. its like you're feeling so many opposing feelings at once b/c you feel giddy due to the crush but are also aware that it's so one sided AHHHHH ohhh that's a cool way to think about it!! that's a good point, both songs have this theme of shimmering/twinkling for someone else. thanks for sharing that! 😊
OMG! I'm binge watching all your Taylor analyses😍 And I also LOVE Lana, Boygenius... Regarding Gold Rush, I think the way she sings the intro is trying to imitate a siren singing, like in the greek tragedies. Because in the old legends and stories sirens attracted sailors ir order to drown them. That's why the intro sounds like the protagonist is looking at the water, looking at a ship (that couldn't resist) sinking, making this twinkling light while it drowns. The protagonist, as we know halfway through the song, fights this impulse and they never jump. Taylor is already telling us at the beginning :) "Gleaming Twinkling Eyes like sinking ships On waters so inviting I almost jump in"
When u mentioned fever i immediately thought of cruel summer where she mentioned “fever dream high...” then “I’m always waiting for u to be waiting below”. It’s like the same concept of falling and hoping that their crush will catch them
omg that's a great connection!! you're right, it's the same concept...kind of like being so in 'love'/'lust' that it's sickening. thank you for pointing that out, i always just envisioned someone waiting down throwing rocks at the window (mild romeo/juliet vibes) with the line 'i'm always waiting for you to be waiting below' but your viewpoint of that falling/catching dynamic is a beautiful way to look @ it. thanks for sharing! 😊
Great job SS, you saved me time from figuring this one out, heck I'm still working on Folklore 😄. Look forward to more of both of the albums from you. Keep up the awesome evals, I hope more people find your channel, your the best I've come across for what you do👍
Thank you for your explanation and perspective. Definitely day dreaming about someone but I know he’s not the right person for me so this helped me snap out of it lol
You look like Emma Roberts from 'Wild Child' I am sorry if this doesnt come across as a compliment even though i intend it that way cause i love that character.

I think that "gleaming, twinkling" refers to the image she has of the person. Like the gold in the gold rush.
Loved this video!
yes! the love interest is like her treasure ✨
and thank you!! 😊
