    I'm so glad I came across your RUclips channel. I bought a 158-1802 last year at an estate sale and the machine was in excellent condition, super clean.. with all these attachments that I had no idea how to use.
    Then I find this channel and have learned so much. Thank you for posting your knowledge in a concise and easy to follow format.
    I even noticed watching this video that I had thread a part of the machine backward, which now explains why the thread was breaking. Human error!!!

  • @1953childstar
    @1953childstar 5 лет назад +3

    First, I cannot believe how quickly you can thread a machine !!! My late ( and beloved ) grandmother loved those Kenmore machines. She had a Singer # 201 in the 1950's when I was a child and in 1962 she bought a # 500, which for some reason she hated ( she loved to sew in knits and it was problematic for her ). She bought the "Sears best" Kenmore and loved it for knits and buttonholes.

    • @SewSaveMe
      @SewSaveMe  5 лет назад +1

      If its any consolation, out of all the machines ive used. Ive only found Kenmore 158 series are designed to be threaded like that. I can't thread my two singers near that fast. Or my Kenmore 148. Not even my industrial can be threaded like that.

    Awesome tutorial. My first one was the Japanese motor refurbish one, which gave me the tips on practical motor recovery. Now this one, which inspired me to complete a Kenmore cam and accessory set with the missing cover plate from eBay. When it arrives at my house, I will sew some button holes and eyelets! so happy to have found your channel! i recently purchased a kenmore 158.19461 but am a beginner and am trying to learn things as i go (without a manual or any attachments). am pleased to see how many videos you have dedicated to kenmores. i was recently thinking of switching my machine out for one that is a little newer or readily comes with attachments/instructions because i couldn't find much info about it online, but your videos give me hope that the 158.19461 just needs more fiddling with! thank you and keep up the awesome work! :)

    I'm having a great time finding and watching your videos. I realize this one's older but it's great.
    My 158-14001 came with the green plastic dial-a-buttonhole attachment. It was a bit cumbersome back in 1969 when I got it and still is, although it will make decent buttonholes. However, the metal version you show does a better job. I'm going to go find one for my 158-18800. Loved your demo! I've never tried to put button holes in a knit (for obvious reasons) but having seen this gives me all kinds of ideas. Thanks!

      Plastic one isnt bad. I do like the metal one better long as the felt under it is intact. But the kenmore button hole system works so much better then any other system Ive used.

    Yours is a helpful guide. It does have a cam. Thanks to you, the number code now makes sense (no manual came with it). There is no hole behind the width guide plate but there are two screw holes to the right aligned at the bottom. I only have one Kenmore 158, It's the Kenmore 8, 158.13412, I got it second hand without any attachments and dial settings that I didn't understand. I've learned some of them like the zigzag and what the orange dot meant on the dial. I had to locate and buy a zipper foot and a zigzag foot, because it only came with the straight stitch foot, so far that was all I knew of to buy. I saw in one video they mentioned that the machine could do buttonholes but didn't show how, or if I needed any more attachments. The dial settings that look like they might make buttonholes are three rectangles, one with a heavy stroke (line) on the left; the middle one has heavy strokes top and bottom, then the last one has a heavy stroke on the right. I was hoping that meant I didn't need other attachments to make buttonholes, but I haven't been able to make anything but a mess.

      You can try looking for feet at a good industrial sewing supply. In DTLA i have found all kinds of feet for my low shank - high shank is a little tougher to find. The pricing is not bad. All of the feet are either pronged or are used with a quick release attachment. ACE Sewing has almost any foot you might need. Begga in the next block also has feet that will fit (low shank). Good luck.

      You would have to look in the book Kenmore had 3 plate systems there virtually all the same as far as the top plate and pretty much cross over to any of them as long as you got the correct gear plate theres quit a few different size of those. You would have to pull the part number from your book to get the right one or measure it exact if you blind by it.

    • @SewSaveMe

      Should just screw in the deck at the top with a thumb screw. Unless your kenmore dont support it. And you will need the gear plate too for it to drop onto. If you dont have that plate be careful theres like 3-4 different sizes make sure you measure twice before you buy. :)

      They dont actually stop moving. They drop down below the plate. If yours isnt dropping down its because it still sticky. You need to keep oiling under there til they free up.

    • @SewSaveMe
      @SewSaveMe  3 года назад +1

      It took me a while to figure out why they made left homing machines. When I figured out how to weld needles together I understood why they did it. Way cheaper to weld two needles together to twin needle then to mold them into metal. I like my left homing quit a bit esp since i can make my own twin needles of any size or type for about 10 cents.

    • @jph2329
      @jph2329 3 года назад

      @@SewSaveMe so you saying that people used to weld two needles together to make a twin needle? I had no idea, and even so its still i don’t think for a company like sears to design so many machines for something someone at home may or may not do. • @SewSaveMe

      No im saying sears used to sell twin needles that were welded together for there left homing machines and they were a fraction of the price of normal ones.
