A dark and poignant song about growing up. Growing up is one of the hardest things; when we are children life seems to straightforward, we are surrounded by people who love us and want to see us thrive. The world seems full and we are excited by the propest of adulthood. Then adulthood arrives and we lose our innocence, life seems complicated, we struggle, childhood friends move away, there is no longer the routine of school, parents - who once seemed so capable and in charge, age and become weak. We become filled with regrets for dreams that went unfulfilled..... It's tough when you are a young adult. "Oh no no no no no" is one the most powerful lines in this song for me.
First heard this song when I was 9 hot fuss was the first album I ever listened to , before I even knew what albums were , I’m 17 now and at 3 am it hit me . Like a truck
I'm 32 not sure if I'm still a "young adult" probably not but I certainly don't feel old and experienced enough to navigate life successfully. I just split with the girl I thought I would marry one day. I'm moving to back to where I used to live before we met where I'd had some of the best times, I'm moving and starting again. I have a longing to go back but I can't tell if I'm longing to be back on familiar turf or just longing for the past.
Rudy Gonzalez sure does especially when the woman you love is no longer around ! Breakups are the worst and I’m broken heart 💔 ‘d at moment, thinking about my long lost fiancé 😔
I lost my virginity to a girl who lived in a house that was on the route to the job I worked when I bought this album back in the day. "Right in the feels" is an understatement.
This song speaks to the kind of regret-filled hindsight that I often feel as I grow older. I'd do anything just to go back and tell my younger self how important those birthday parties with family were. It's a weird song because it reminds us that life is forever fleeting, and yet it also reminds us that there's so many memories to be made, and so much to smile for.
it’s 12:47am, i’m listening to this song on repeat, reminiscing the old days when i didn’t have to worry about a single thing, except being on time for school. now, we all carry all these worries, regrets, sadness, struggles, all while juggling through marriage, kids, work, food, rent, everything else, but i just remember that i have to pull through and smile like i mean it so others won’t think i’m weak and giving up, when in fact, i am.
Wait until your mid 50's... A whole new set of worries takes over. But NEVER let worry or regrets take over your life. Its what makes life interesting if that makes sense.

That's why it's important to be detached from materialistic things. Live life and enjoy your relationships with friends and family. We take those experiences with us after we die, not our smartphones lol.
“And someone will drive her around, down the same streets that I did”. That one shook me to my core. I had a high school sweetheart that I started dating senior year. We dated all through college and everything was perfect, she was an amazing person. But for some reason the love just went dry, we stopped doing things we used to do like fun dates and adventures. It was taking a toll on both of us and we mutually decided to break up. It was hard for us both, leaving someone who was always there for you for the past five years, your first everything. We hugged, our shirt collars were drenched in tears and she quietly walked away. I never saw her again, but part of my mourns as if I still love her. Maybe I do. The lines of life that are meant to connect always will. All I can do now is try to move on from her and hope that everything works out in her life. Love u gz
Everyone has the one and we love with all our might n u will never love that mighty again but it’s true because I hope the best for them regardless of the breakup u genuinely want them happy even when it’s not with u. The one.
I think what it means is too enjoy what you have before it’s gone, “smile while it’s happening because soon it’ll be over” I think is the moral of the song
This song was my alarm ring for waking up I was in college, away from family and childhood friends. I was happy and lonely at the same time. This has always been my comfort song. It made me feel and be okay when there are times that I feel most alone. This song always feels like a cold hug.

Love the way these guys reference English music. A solid dose of The Smiths with some 80s synth sounds thrown in for good measure. A mighty band and hard working too.
Interesting, didn't think of The Smiths! This song in particular got me thinking more of The Cars' power pop hooks mixed with that good old New Order's melancholy
Here's a sobering fact: we're about to enter the 2020's. This song is over a decade old. Most of the people who listened to this when it first came out were in highschool. Time is moving fast. Enjoy this moment.
I was around 10 years old when this album was released and my Dad would play it in the car all the time in 2004. The line ‘’boy one day you’ll be a man’’ used to stick in my head back then so much it made me so excited about the future thinking one day I’ll be a grown up.. here I am 20 years later about to turn 30 years old and it’s harder than I ever even imagined it would be, but I’m so grateful for the memories. Thank you The Killers.

Even if your body was to never age past 25, and you would never die, you would still feel yourself age into your 30's.. and what then? Ever think that aging is a lot more than physiological, and the whole world would have to change to keep a youthful heart? Yet, if the world didn't change, you might worry about going through it all again. Perhaps endlessly..
"Change your ways while you're young" is a powerful line. Our elders trying ro reach thru time to give us their knowledge while at the same time waching us walk the same road they did, knowing full well what is waiting at the end of said road. Im 39 and now im trying to reach out.
I was 35 when this came out and I have to say they are one of the greatest bands to come out. I’m a big music fan and I always wonder who’s gonna grab my attention when it comes to new artists, and I have to say this band has never let me down as a group or individual solo projects. It’s amazing to see all the bands that came out when they did and The Killers are still here and the other bands are gone. Great music never dies and Hot Fuss will never go out of style.
Brandon flowers is not only a top performer, but a expert wordsmith. The killers are great and he's good solo also. Age has matured the vocal chords like a very nice glass of wine 🍷 ☝👏👏
Aline Galvão I’ve just started watching the O.C. I’ve never heard of it before have been watching it for a week and just hit season 2 episode 4 and was amazed to see these guys playing. To give a bit of context I was in year 1 in 2004 when that episode was released (graduated 2015)
This is actually my favorite killers song, and that's really saying something. This and Read My Mind are two of my favorite music videos of all time also, and I am so happy that they finally released it on their vevo. Thank you so much Brandon and co. for finally re-releasing this art!
SAME omfg this song is such a fucking masterpiece. I know Mr. Brightside is everyone favorite, and I love that song too. But Smile Like You Mean it, Read My Mind and All These Thing That I've Done were the best songs. Hot Fuss is probably one of the best albums ever fucking released.
This song is getting me through this holiday. My family is either dead, or estranged, so I spent it with my SO’s family. Smiling like it doesn’t kill me that my loved ones aren’t here & all I have are ghosts & memories
As much as what other comments have been saying, I've only stumbled upon this song now. Still being fairly young myself, what I personally get from this song is to be genuine in life. You have to smile like you mean it, because we don't know if we get a second chance at this. Everyone has regrets, but it's your choice to focus or to not focus on them, we all make mistakes, and that's more than ok, that's a part of what makes us who we are. Mistakes are a learning experience, so don't be regret or spiteful just because you missed an opportunity, our circumstances make who we end up being. As we get older, it becomes harder and harder to change your habits, so just try to change them while you're young. And the thing is, let's say that we really only do get one chance at this, wouldn't you want to live life as you like? To be genuine about it? That being said, we still have to be smart about decisions and how we go about things. Life is about balance, to be genuine about it, care about it. Also weigh things when you can, if you can. Because people care so much less than you think, since they're busy worrying about themselves. So it's not worth it to do something just for other people to envy you, or to be "better" than them. Smile like you mean it, be genuine about life, and live how you like, just be responsible, just be sensible, just as long as you know we all make mistakes, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, because they help so much with who we become, as long as we can learn from our mistakes and understand our flaws to better ourselves. And as much as we will get hurt, it's very much worth noting to not become spiteful or bitter, as easy as it is. It's easy in a similar way that it's easy to reminisce on the past. However the past is in the past, we need to accept that, and learning about today might help that, amongst losing ourselves in jobs, or hobbies. We're all going to get hurt, but that's inevitable as we are now, and so why not try? Why not try to make the most of what we can of life?
I feel you. I miss my dad's side of the family. Heck I miss my mom's too. I remember the last time we were gathered was a few years ago at a backyard party celebrating some holiday.
I can’t believe people find this depressing or dark, I find it really uplifting and life affirming! Although yes I think it’s fair to say it’s “bittersweet.” But honestly, it’s made me feel a lot better about things and more grateful to be alive/motivated
This was one of my best friend's favorite songs. Since he passed it feels different to listen to. Cherish the people in your life and the time you have.
I did my exams a while back, so I can help you out on what it's like. Your mock exams are harder than your real ones. To revise use past papers. That's it in short i wish you luck.
Holy heck I love this song so much, and I'm never going to get over this album. Hot Fuss will always be a part of me and I kind of hate it because the whole album reminds me of someone I don't want to think about, but it's still worth the pain, because it's that fucking good.
Phoebe Peterman completely agree and imm on the same boat! reminds me of someone but the music takes me back to a heck of a place that will always be a part of me.
Phoebe Peterman one of the most underrated bands of the 2000. Hot Fuss, Sam’s Town, and Battleborn are AWESOME! Plus they have really good shows and Brandon Flowers is one of the best and underrated frontman all time.
If ever there was an Echo and the Bunnymen song, this is it. Arrangement, lyrics, vocalizations. Echo and the Bunnymen all the way. Listen to this back to back with "Bring On the Dancing Horses".
Brandon looks so different now to when back then! This is how I remember him. Also just realised this music video could be about them being ghosts and watching over different families who live in the house that they once lived in and telling them to appreciate the small things like smiling etc. I adore this song and this band they are just amazing!
me: *sees the notification * well i'm glad but i won't watch it now, i've listened to this many times also me: *at 1:00 * SMILE LIKE YOU MEAAN IIIIIT DOODOODOOOOOOO
I used to have this song set as the alarm. Everyday I would wake up for school at 6:30 and the first thing I heard was the first line. I think especially for the time I was going through and the nature of growing up, it was fitting. Sounds really convey memory, every time I hear this song it takes me back to drowsily waking up and rushing off to school. Even in my own mind I can’t experience the moment as vividly as I do when I hear this song. All in all it’s a great song, and really embodies what it feels like to grow up, or to feel nostalgia. All in all, 10/10 song.
This video reminds of my childhood home I was born in Sicily. I had been there 'till I was 8 years old. Then we moved to Tuscany and now I'm currently living in Spain. In that house in Sicily I grew up, with my father(who passed away 7 years ago) and mom. Now in that house is living a couple who are paying the rent to my family. That house I don't see since 10 years or so. So this song and this video kinda reminds of that, of "strangers" living in something that was mine.
Brandon definitely doesn't sing with a British accent, it's Great Plains American (Western) accent. But I can see why you thought that as Brits sound kind of American when singing.
Funny how this song takes on a different meaning as ive gotten older. When it released, I was a depressed, loner 16 year old and I always took the meaning as "chin up, kid. It'll get better". Now, in my mid 30s, it's haunting. And the video is even more haunting. Everyone I love is dying and I know Ill be there soon, too.
Something simple such as smiling can have so many different connotations. Smile like you mean it even if life is sad. Smile when you're happy a natural reaction but an act that should be done often. You never know when life can hit you. So enjoy those moments and smile. :)
This song hurts me to listen to. It reminds me of when I was young. It's a couple years younger than myself, but it reminds me of my house from 2011. Everything was simple. Everything was normal. Waking up in the morning felt worth it.
I absolutely love this song. I’m a 15 year old with a love for music, and this song has been one of my favorites because this song isn’t that metaphorical, although metaphorical songs can be fun to look at through a different lens. It’s just about a man telling his past self to enjoy growing up. That makes me realize why I need this song. I need to tell sixth grade me that everything is okay. People are gonna be there for you through good times and bad. Now, as I go into high school while passing with flying colors, I need to remind myself of this song every once in a while just to make sure that I smile like I mean it and go through life always expecting the good in everything. I need this change in my life, and this song is the perfect soundtrack to it all. Update: There’s almost two weeks left until I’m done with my summer break. I’m nervous but excited at the same time, and I just hope my first day goes well. Edit: I’m a sophomore now. Everything’s going great, and I hope I have the best year I could ever ask for.

Lol omg same this song used to make me feel happy. Wtf lol.
Dreams aren’t what the used to be... something’s slide by so carelessly 🙃🤓
Brandon Flowers is one of the best musicians of a generation
Hot Fuss was an amazing album. The content was original across the board
This music video reeks of that late 2000s “melancholy” feel. Anyone know what I mean?
yes! It's beautiful!
Yeah, I understand your characterization of this era. This song, for example, always produces a bitter-sweet sensation for me.
Nah its just British style we are more depressing lol
No, late 2000's no. Early 2004: when it was released
I was in high school in the early 2000s graduated in 2010
"Change your ways while you're young" is a powerful line. Our elders trying ro reach thru time to give us their knowledge while at the same time waching us walk the same road they did, knowing full well what is waiting at the end of said road. Im 39 and now im trying to reach out.
❤
I just saw the Killers last night at SunFest and they KILLED IT!!! Omg what a performance - they are legendary, BRAVO!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Me quedo con la agrupación original, el último material..., mmm..., ya no es lo mismo.
Anyone new you like these days?
This cover of the Killers by the Killers is really good
That's shocking.
They should do that because Brandon's voice has probably changed a little bit range wise where he could do a cover of the song.
Omnipotent WaffleGod i hate his voice now
Best song on the album. Happy 20th anniversary!!
Most underrated song of all time
Every lyric in this song could very near almost be a quote, poetry at its finest and good god the incredible everlasting killers
I first heard this song non-stop in 2005.
15 years later I still listen to it. Classics never die.
Commenting just to bring you back 3 years later!!!! Remember "smile like you mean it!"
Same
One of the Best Rock bands of the 21st Century.
Well said
Actually, one of the only rock bands of the 21st century. So sad we've been overwhelmed by complete urban crap music.
@@Wheresthelove7 Agreed
Of the 21st century? Of all time!
There was a video for this song!?!?! How did I not know!
Jose Mazon same thought
Brandon flowers is not only a top performer, but a expert wordsmith. The killers are great and he's good solo also. Age has matured the vocal chords like a very nice glass of wine 🍷 ☝👏👏
I closed my eyes now and suddenly I'm in 2006 watching The O.C. on TV...
Aline Galvão I’ve just started watching the O.C. I’ve never heard of it before have been watching it for a week and just hit season 2 episode 4 and was amazed to see these guys playing. To give a bit of context I was in year 1 in 2004 when that episode was released (graduated 2015)
I close my eyes and I remember the day we moved from LA to Phoenix and I was hearing this song on my CD player.
Yeaaahhh
This entire album is such a core memory for me. Bless you guys for being such a huge part of my childhood 🙏
Dang! I was 14 in 9th grade, my brother was a senior and use to blast this album. I know every word. Now I’m 30!!!! Nostalgia 💜
brandon flowers is so talented, i love the guy his vocal is just immense. i freaking love the killers
What a great day to be alive...
The 2000's when alternative rock used to be awesome!!!
Randomly popped in my head after not listening to this song for almost a decade and boy are the lyrics everything I needed to hear.
Same! I was literally almost asleep…this song came to me outta fucking nowhere…wide awake now lol
This song always breaks my heart remembering the old parties with family
yup, me too. Now most of the those people are either divorced, dead, or they don't talk to each other.
Yulian Coronado I know how you feel.my grand father left this world and this Song is runing on my head
EDI WOW.
I feel you. I miss my dad's side of the family. Heck I miss my mom's too. I remember the last time we were gathered was a few years ago at a backyard party celebrating some holiday.
All my childhood friends gone separate ways some are no longer in this planet some have families now I'm 29 by the way.
I can’t believe people find this depressing or dark, I find it really uplifting and life affirming! Although yes I think it’s fair to say it’s “bittersweet.” But honestly, it’s made me feel a lot better about things and more grateful to be alive/motivated
I think it's the vibe of the song. It does have a slightly dark or haunting feel to it especially with the keyboards
Kinda dark until that last chorus after the break. Feels like a weight is lifted ❤ after on the same streets that I did!
When I was an adolescent this song made me feel sad, now nostalgic, the way the home stays alone at the end
This is the standout track from the record for me. That synth lead is just so so perfect and simple
As beautiful as Sam's Town was, Hot Fuss will forever be The Killers' best album.
hot sauce is my favorite i like to drink it and pour it in my eyes sometimes, it burns a little, actually a lot but i like pain
Hello friend, how're you doing today?
A New Wave Masterpiece. The Killers' music feels like a throwback to the 80s with its Pop Sound.
This was one of my best friend's favorite songs. Since he passed it feels different to listen to. Cherish the people in your life and the time you have.
I should be learning for my exams, but here I am, crying to this song
I did my exams a while back, so I can help you out on what it's like. Your mock exams are harder than your real ones. To revise use past papers. That's it in short i wish you luck.
Lmao, legit same
I should be doing school work while I'm stuck at home, but here I am, crying to this song.
Well, in hindsight, it was a good decision. Those exams are likely to have never happened due to the coronavirus.
Perfect
The Synth intro is hella cursed . Makes me nostalgic for the things I've never even experienced
This house is hella cursed. 4 ghostly apparitions just lounging around and stuff.
This is the music we deserved in 2017
exactly!!
Yes!
Well said!!!!!!!
Epic Song, The Killers, This Song Is Almost 20 Years Old.
This song still evokes chills, it's so good.
Holy heck I love this song so much, and I'm never going to get over this album. Hot Fuss will always be a part of me and I kind of hate it because the whole album reminds me of someone I don't want to think about, but it's still worth the pain, because it's that fucking good.
Phoebe Peterman completely agree and imm on the same boat! reminds me of someone but the music takes me back to a heck of a place that will always be a part of me.
same here. memories of beautiful and sometimes difficult times but all worth it. hot fuss = the soundtrack to my early 20s.
Phoebe Peterman one of the most underrated bands of the 2000. Hot Fuss, Sam’s Town, and Battleborn are AWESOME! Plus they have really good shows and Brandon Flowers is one of the best and underrated frontman all time.
Haha, Phoebe. The true test of song/album... PASS
killers is such a good band that i can see our future kids will look up for them and be like 'your generetions music is great mom!'
Elif true
'your generation's music is great mom!' - said no kid ever, sadly :(
@@paradanglers hey I listen to the music than my father used to (Peter Gabriel, Toto, Dire Straights, David Bowie etc)

This is honestly my favorite song of all time. It gives me such bittersweet emotions and it's been my favorite song since high school.
Best song from Hot Fuss, lyrics are something else.
This has got to be one of the greatest songs of all time that they brought out
Oh my God did I just successfully time travel
yup lol

If ever there was an Echo and the Bunnymen song, this is it. Arrangement, lyrics, vocalizations. Echo and the Bunnymen all the way. Listen to this back to back with "Bring On the Dancing Horses".
I'm getting this played at my funeral
Grimn _
The love that we all give you will never fade, so live life to the fullest :)
I'm going to have this played and then Day-O straight afterwards

Best Killers song.
Kawaii Harrymen ohhhhh
Kawaii Harrymen ohhhh
ohhh
K H. I'm from the 70's prog rock generation, but I love the killers. They are right up there.
Hmmm idk, it's a tough toss between this, when we were young, be still, and i haven't even gotten to their other songs.
Brandon looks so different now to when back then! This is how I remember him. Also just realised this music video could be about them being ghosts and watching over different families who live in the house that they once lived in and telling them to appreciate the small things like smiling etc. I adore this song and this band they are just amazing!
William Rowley actually this song is about maturity you won’t have fun when your old lol
He does look a lot different but now he's more handsome 😍
any relation to Geoff?
Melina he’s always been
Lol right??? He lost the baby face and gained that trademark fluffy hair of his.
I get a The Strokes vibe from this song mixed with a little 80’s new wave. Such a great album.
i know that im late on this one, but what an awsome track. I nearly shed a tear every time. simply beutifull.
Youre never too late to listen to any music
@@AliffAlive damn straight. Good music is timeless

Unpopular opinion, this is better than Mr Brightside
Bronnie Kathryn I don’t necessarily think that’s an unpopular opinion...
You stole my idea ... You read my mind!
Arturo Vega other great song
Mr brightside is probably the most overrated song ever tbh
Moss I do like it but it’s just way overplayed
The way Brandon walks looks like he's trying to avoid pieces of Lego on the floor
Lol, the stepping on legos days. That's the part I don't miss.
this gave me shivers, like the sad kind. I imagine this is what it must be like to be a ghost

One of the greatest bands of all time. I will listen to their songs until I die
Hell yeah. The Killers, favorite band of all time.
This song was so underrated. It's amazing
Wait for a f*cking tiktok trend to ruin it and make it popular at the same time
Happy 20th anniversary to Hot Fuss
One of the most underrated songs ever
The most underrated song ever
@@mannysykes 19 million views. Is this a joke?
All the visuals in this video are UK so it's easy to see why people assumed they were British. Great band.
Phil Steer also brandon flowers sings with a british accent
Brandon definitely doesn't sing with a British accent, it's Great Plains American (Western) accent.
But I can see why you thought that as Brits sound kind of American when singing.
Did anyone else get the notification for this and was wondering if they made a new video for it? 😂❤
Shoobert Magee yaaaaas
Shoobert Magee a bit, I just want put of my mind to get a vid
Ser Smiles yes Same! Out of my mind is my favorite from the new album
Shoobert Magee 🙋🏻🙋🏻
Yeah, I was hoping that too :)
This was one hell of a music video
seriously creepy
Why is it creepy?
The Minesweeps one hell of a song! Turn it up to “11!”
Shaun Hill idk but another one of my favourite bands have made a bunch of mvs with ghosts / the lead singer as a ghost so it isn’t that creepy.
yeah i guess, but the killers as ghosts... would be an awesome thought. Just depressing :( the whole video
This song hurts me to listen to. It reminds me of when I was young. It's a couple years younger than myself, but it reminds me of my house from 2011. Everything was simple. Everything was normal. Waking up in the morning felt worth it.
Why the hell does this not have more views!? It's such a great song!
It's an old song that da kids have not heard of. They wanna listen to some materialistic shit about wearing gucci and stealing boyfriends.
If it was released when it came out it would.
....it's a very sad song, and the video illustrates the pain, BRAVO!
@@randomuploadsism
Lol! Sad, but true
@@randomuploadsism the most real thing anyone has said about music
Happy 16th anniversary to this wonderful song 🎧💯
The synth line is what breathes this song into alive. I love it.
I couldn’t change my ways like I was young and she couldn’t smile like she meant it…. Great song
I always liked how their songs reminded me of 80s songs lol they have the same sound but they also have a modern vibe too I just love the killers
