*In this video I use the word coarse in the traditional sense dealing with roughness (I know you might not get it now but I will explain in further videos)....I accidentally left out WAVY in this video! DAG IT! Wavy hair is basically flat, with "c" or a wave like pattern. There are some people with jumbo waves or tiny waves. You can also have a mixture of waves and spirals, kinks and waves. There are no rules but IM TIRED OF PEOPLE CALLING ME CURLY WHEN CLEARY THERE IS A DIFFERENCE AND IM NOT EVEN CLOSE! This is why I like words like nappy, kinky, coarse, etc. However I must admit...I wish I would've packed this with a bit more information and photos (google failed me when I needed him most). I haven't filmed in so long I'm a bit rusty so comment underneath this post if I should just go ahead and redo this entire video! PLUS! if you understand what I'm talking about leave some links to some examples because google and Pinterest failed me when it came to the photos. oh...and im finally FIRSTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Very, very well said. Some people may need photos to see the difference but I wouldn't say that you need to redo this video... I'm 3c 4a silky everywhere but the very front corners of my head are semi-silky.... I love watching your channel even though I don't have coarse hair you give a lot of great advice that I use.
AWWW WELL THANKS FOR WATCHING!!! Google and Pinterest were really sucking that day. As many times as I’ve seen the particular photos I needed, they vanished the day I was editing this video 😑.
I wish they would change our hair type from "kinky" to "fluffy" like our hair be looking like clouds frfr 😂 Be like "I'm type 4 fluff out here ma'am" 👏🏾 I'm so glad you broke down this video, the ppl gotta know!
Yeah that's a neat idea because when hair is moisturized properly, it's fluffy or at least that's how mine looks when the humidity gets into it there is no definition but it's just fluffy like cotton and soft.
More Type 4 distinctions: I think type 4 hair comes in 3 different types: SILKY, COTTONY, and COARSE (brillo pad like). 1) Silky type 4 people have soft, shiny hair that can slick down, clump, and have a curl/coil or wave pattern (that is VISIBLE) and can be uniform. They can comb or brush their hair with ease. They CAN be type 4a 4b or 4c. 4c naturals in this category usually get mistaken (or badgered) for being 4a hair - b/c their hair is so shiny when they apply product or able to clump & coil. But they still have a tiny curl/coil (circumference) or wave pattern. 2) Cottony type 4’s have SOFT fluffy hair that can range from easy to comb to somewhat resistant. The hair appears dull or with a sheen even if moisturized. The hair is fragile, soft, but usually able to make an Afro (as it grows OUT/UPWARDS); and able to be manipulated. They do not have a uniform curl pattern or uniform clump/ but can get somewhat an appearance w/gel. For example, they can smooth their hair down w/gel and have some uniform waves appear- with a sheen (not shine). This must be your mixed/combo hair as you describe. Again, their hair is soft to the touch! Usually mid level shrinkage (50-70%), sometimes high shrinkage (70-90%). They can be 4a 4b or 4c. 3) Kinky-Coarse Type 4 hair is DULL (no shine), dry looking, wiry and brillo pad like. Again, no shine, no sheen - even when Moist! It feels hard or stiff to the touch. It CANNOT be slicked down (even with a jar of gel) and will appear thick even when it’s not. It shrinks A LOT! Extreme 75-95% shrinkage but can have mid level shrinkage also (50% +). Most forms of stretching cause it to break short (in spots) or thin out b/c it is so fragile. If you tried to slick or smooth it down, it fights (hard) to get back to its original state. It will appear thick (stand up) as you try to smooth it). It is not easy to create a round fluffy fro. And very resistant to comb/brushing/detangling. It doesn’t clump yet it also does not fluff easily (think of a skinny looking twist out). They are usually 4b or 4c. GlamFun on RUclips appears to be an example of this type. The kinky coarse type 4 hair, I believe, is the rarest of the type 4’s! That is my hair type. I call it brillo pad hair. It’s the kinkiest- usually shortest, most high breakage hair. Most type 4 people have cottony or silky hair. All categories can have fine medium or thick strands; and various levels of shrinkage. The mid category - cottony is the most common. Again thanks for recognizing there is more to hair texture than just curl size & porosity!
But ok ... I like the break down but now let’s elevate the cottony now let’s make them feel fabulous. I’m not sure if we are elevating them ... like are we still sending a negative tone ? Just reflecting
I hate when they equate silky shiny with moisturized hair and if your hair doesn't shine it most not be mosturized. No, my hair is coarse and not silky but its plenty soft and mosturized.
Chazzzisawesome Sometimes the reason people don’t get much shine is because of the color of their hair. My hair is not coarse but it is reddish brown. It doesn’t get the kind of shine I have seen people with black hair easily get. A lot of my relatives dye their hair black for that reason.
Curly hair here. Your hair is beautiful! Yes silky hair looks so defined and amazing. But course kinky hair does look softer in my opinion, I find it much cuter.😂♥️
My hair doesn't shine because my strands are coarse. (Refering to the diameter of my strands causing less shine) but my curls can get defined very well. Eisha taylor on RUclips has 3c/4a hair but her hair looks coarse because of the diameter of her strands so her hair isn't as shiny as the other 3c/4a fine stranded chicks Majority of the black population have fine strands (Refering to the diameter of your hair strands)
I love the passion and I agree 100%. So many of us type 4 coarse girls have tortured ourselves and our wallets trying to make our hair do things it just doesn’t want to do. This just results in constant setbacks and limit our hair’s progress. I truly believe more self acceptance and caring for our hair the way it truly wants will allow our hair to be at its full potential. Maybe we need to redifine what beautiful hair looks like and stop idolizing hair that doesnt look like our own. I don’t think you should redo the video. Maybe you could make a part 2 with more photos ❤️❤️
Ok a part 2, that definitely makes sense. I’m glad I didn’t delete them. Some video never even make it out of my video editor so I’ve been really skeptical of this one. I completely agree. There are not many type 4c coarse people so o see how we keep getting looked over but that doesn’t mean we don’t exist.
I was thinking about it but he keeps his hair braided. He also can’t take a decent selfie to save his life. I think I might just have him come onto my channel.
Thank you for saying this! I’ve been seeing a lot videos and people saying 4c can do anything all the other hair types can do, you just need to put in real effort. I mean it sounds nice and all but a little disingenuous and slightly insulting. Some people put in so much work and their hair won’t get that result and that’s ok. Hair doesn’t have to be defined to be beautiful and especially healthy cuz I see some people saying undefined hair is damaged or dry. That isn’t necessarily true it’s sad because it’ll confuse people and discourage them more than help them feel confident and knowledgeable with what they have.
RIGHT!!! Some people have more uniformed kinks, curls, etc. so to say your hair is damaged if you don’t....that’s wild playaaa. That’s why I try to call this info out for those who might fall into that.
Thank you for this. This vid could be used as another testimonial as to why the 1 to 4 hair typing is SO VERY flawed. Too restrictive or fitting too many under the same umbrella. I like the alternative presented by RUclipsr GreenBeauty better. It's all about learning your patterns, porosity, density, thickness, scalp health, etc throughout your head of hair. Doing that is a learning curve. I'm 2 years natural and still learning. They don't call it a journey for nothing. 😏
@@Chazzzisawesome She defines TRUE hair typing in to 6 categories: Pattern, texture, density, thickness, sebum (scalp), and porosity. Emphasizing that those lumped into category 4 are often a combination of ALL these, making the category 4 too wide, too imperfect, and too restrictive. "The Science of Black Hair" by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy breaks down hair texture as Thready, Wiry, Cottony, Spongy. Also curl pattern is either, L, O, I, S shapes
Oh I forgot Silky. So it's Wiry. Thready, Cottony, Spongy and Sily And yes you can have a combination of 2. Like I'm mostly cotton some spongy. I'll add each description later
Yes! I love the LOIS typing system. That curl typing system predates the more popular one made famous by Oprah’s former hairstylist. In my opinion, it’s the most comprehensive system for typing & truly understanding your hair. This was a great informative video too. I hope it goes viral so more people can understand & aid in the health of their hair
Type: Fine, medium, course Curl Pattern: Straight, wavy, curly, coily, kinky You can have course curly/juicy hair or fine kinky hair... If you DO NOT have curls then NO product is about to create them. It comes. There is sooo much variation from head to head and even hair that APPEARS very similar can behave/react very differently. Y'all have to get to know and appreciate your own hair and goodness sake STOP putting 1million products on your hair that don't even contain ingredients beneficial to hair. Some of y'all don't have a dry scalp or even dry hair...your scalp/hair is confused because you're putting foolishness all up in it.🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
SimplyRickeeta "if you do not have curls then no product is about to create them" - EXACTLY. It gets annoying when I'm out and about and people ask me "what did you put in your hair to make it so curly?" Like uh.... this is my natural curl pattern. No matter how much leave in and gel you slap in your hair, your hair will curl the way it's designed to. And there's nothing wrong with that. All of our hair is different. Literally.
Wow, this is so true!! I’m so glad you are having a conversation about it. 🙏🏽There’s a huge difference in silky type 4a hair and coarse 4c and just putting type 4 hair gives a false sense of similarity. It continues to make those with naturally coarser hair feel inferior cause the ideal “look” can never be achieved whether it’s loose mixed curls or the silky tight coils :/
Some quick RUclipsr examples: Silky 4a: Naptural85, eVaniwithaV, Halfrican Beaute, SistaWithRealHair (3c/4a), GlamTwinz (3c/4a) Silky 4b/4c: NaturalTemi, Adanna Madueke, and any 4c person you have seen successfully do the wet look or slick back Cottony 4a: Kimmaytube (cotton/silky combo), ULoveMegz (combo) and many others (most 4a seem to be silky or cotton/silky combo) Cottony 4b/4c: You - Chazzzisawesome (combo)!, ChiziDuru, KandidKinks, and most of the youtube 4b/4c naturals Coarse/Wiry 4b/4c: GlamFun (this is a rare hair type, especially on RUclips!) Also, some people are a combination of categories as you noted.
Ppl might hate me, but I've beeeen thinking that Chime was a cottony wavey type.... Like Cottony 2C (if 2C exists)... ☕.... On another note, if I could make something up, I'd say Viv (Viv's hair therapy? I forget) is like a kinky 1-type. It's bushy, has a coarse appearance, but doesn't really curl (& I don't mean clump) or shrink. Looks like a blowout... naturally! 🤷🏾♀️
Trinican Bee, it’s funny, I thought of adding Chime as a cottony 3c. I used to think she was 4b (and she self identified that way), but as she got more advanced w/her products some waves appeared. I’ll have to look at Viv - I think she’s 3c (semi-cottony?)
Virtuenow I need to follow her then because I thought I had 4b to and some damaged hair because the front is wavy. But even when I big chopped the front is still wavy
YASSSSS!!! I've noticed that "Silky" type 4 hair. I've noticed that cuz yeah no...I am NOT anywhere near silky. This here is crunchy coarse 4C hair. Thank you for making me not feel CRaZy! @_@ I knew it wasn't the same hair! It's all a lie y'all. Damn Type 4 hair is so complicated.
It looks coily when wet and kinks when it dries. My hair is confused. I really like your video. I have type 4 coarse hair. It makes sense. You're so awesome. I hope you and bear have a good day 🐻.
The Science of Black Hair" by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy breaks down hair texture as Thready, Wiry, Cottony, Spongy. Also curl pattern is either, L, O, I, S shapes
This video helped me realise that I have type 4 silky. I've been seeing a lot of type 4 coarse hair on RUclips, because all my siblings have the latter and so assumed I had the same thing. And I've been trying to find what too look for and you just helped me put a label on it. I thought I was just looking at the wrong hair type hair videos but i knew I was type 4 but not exactly what . THANK YOU, OH MY DAYS THANK YOU x
Girl, I'm telling you, young and old need to hear this type of encouraging truth more than we even know. I don't know how natural hair movement has turned into everybody needs popping curls movement. I feel like sometimes people with coarse hair don't realize just how many options they have in regards to how they style their hair, from dreads (which my brother has and now its grown down to his butt-hello length, how are you today?) to afros to braiding (which can also be styled into even more styles). We're surrounded by a lot of, "its good natural hair, if curls are everywhere", videos but that's not all there is to natural hair. I think many of us just need to expose ourselves to more styles bc curls aren't everything, visit pinterest and see just how dope other forms of natural hair can be, look at art of people who highlight natural styles like Sara Golish, experiment with hair cuffs, clips, crowns, wires, threads, jewelry, scarves, wraps, etc. Take back the pride that was stripped from our parents and grandparents who were fired and banned for having certain natural styles. Natural hair isn't meant to be a burden and if our ancestors learned how to manage hair w/o all our modern amenities then we can definitely do it, too. As you said, we just need to learn what works for us and learn how to love us.
This comment is the one! Would love to have you on our iG live to discuss more about this much needed realization. I cannot tell me how many people DM our page a day on IG asking for products to get popping curls. You get down do it... The hair really needs help to stop shedding but the focus is so much on curls, your forgetting the goal of maintaining healthy hair
As naive as it sounds, when I was newly natural I thought all type 4s were the same. Now 14 years into the game, I’ve realized there are levels to this.... lol. I thought ppl were making a big deal out of detangling, but it turns out I’m a silky 4a. I’m going to stop telling ppl “all you have to do is....” because hair care is not one size fits all.
I feel like this video was really helpful because as a 4c natural I was seeing a lot of Brazilian 4c naturals w silkier hair textures doing things I couldn't even dream of w perfect tiny ringlets results 😵 I feel like understanding this stuff helps a lot
I love that you explained this the way that you did!! I'm a kinky 4c and my friends don't understand my struggle!! If ONE MORE PERSON hits me with "my hair used to be like yours but I tamed it," I pinky promise I'm going to SCREAM!!! First of all, I grew to love my hair once we got on the same page in the same book. I don't want to change it.
Right?! If I try to tame my hair, my hair will humble me by LEAVING me. My hair said, "We either gonna do this together or not at all." I said 👌🏾 lol. It's not here for this training-it-to-be-someone-else business.
I actually really needed to watch this. I have type 4 hair, but my hair doesn't seem to "act" like anybody else's hair with "type 4 hair". For instance, I have 4A hair, but it's actually really fine. My mom basically has the same hair as me but it's darker and WAY thicker. So twist outs on her come out amazing. On me, it looks weird because it's like I need more hair xD. On the other end, I'm just realizing that my hair is "silky". I could never understand why my hair seems to be "silky-ish", but still not act like type 3 hair for example. It's like I started watching people who tag their videos with "type 4" AND "type 3" and none of them seemed to fully represent or address all of my problems lol
I'm a silky type 4. I didn't even know it. Once I learned about deep conditioning and the LCO method. That's when I started to notice I have coils and not kinks. Very informative video. I didn't know there was a difference. And I became a product junkie trying to learn and figure out my hair.
No...that is not the goal. Your hair is like 10x more fire than mine because it’s one of a kind. Your the only one with that fro so better learn how to work it.
RIGHT!!!! Sheesh I couldn’t find the photos I needed!!!! I’m thinking about tagging the videos I came across that went viral but I don’t want the creators to think I’m putting them on the spot or trying to be malicious. This is why I was thinking about refilming.
Preach Chazzz! You are one of the few natural hair RUclipsrs I still watch because you keep it simple and honest. There's so much misinformation when it comes to natural hair. The worst thing for me is that so much of the misinformation comes from natural hair RUclipsrs who have silkier hair but fail to be honest about the nature of their hair! Silky hair is beautiful but so is my coarse hair! These days, once I see that the RUclipsr in a tutorial has silky hair, I click next immediately because I need tutorials that are actually applicable to my hair type. Your channel is amazing Chazzz; I'm so glad we have a RUclipsr like you who is knowledgeable on coarse hair. It's rare. Lots of love from France xxx
I appreciate you so much for addressing the differences in hair texture. Some people swear that you can have the same hair as another but you don’t. Nobody has the same exact hair type. Also, I have noticed that my hair had changed over time in the pattern. I have a curl at the ends & coily roots lol.
I agree with everything you’ve said in this video, and I’m glad we’re opening the discourse about making distinctions between hair types and hair textures through videos like these! I do think though that it is possible to have 3C hair and have coarse textured hair, as I have seen naturals who have loose hair but the texture may suggest otherwise. Loved the video 💕
I’ve seen it and an example of that I commonly see is in some mixed children who have 3c curls but their hair doesn’t get silky and always looks frizzy/coarse(which is perfectly fine).
When I was first trying to learn my hair I noticed that some 3c's had thicker roots, drier hair that looked dull, those were coarse 3c. Some had more shine, more moisturized and bouncier hair than mine, those were silky 3c like sunkissedAlba. I'm in the middle, fine/medium coarse.
You have no idea how much I appreciate this video. ❤️I am currently product testing my own natural hair product formulations for natural hair care. Every time I watch natural hair vids on yt, I see that there is so much misconception about certain products giving you different curl patterns that you don’t naturally have. 🤦🏾♀️ This video was very much needed. You now have a new subscriber.
I just wanted to thank you for doing this video. I loved that SOMEONE FINALLY ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE!! I hate when people act like every type 4 is THE SAME!!! It IS NOT!! I also hate the people who act like knowing AND understanding your CURL PATTERN is EQUALLY as valid and important as knowing your as well as porosity, density, etc. Just as you mentioned, if you don’t KNOW these things, you will waste money, break off your hair, get dandruff, buildup, low self esteem........because you have someone with 4a silky expectation and 4c coarse realities. Then they’re wondering why their hair doesn’t look like “Curly Kiesha” with the 4a who only needs water, curl milk and gel to get her curls poppin’. I’m in a supposedly “positive and supportive natural hair group” where the admin treats hair typing like the plague. I understand it can be used negatively at times, but that can be true of just about anything where human beings are concerned. I find that more than anything, it’s extremely beneficial for understanding ones hair.. The same admin, after I posted a pic of me getting my hair pressed after a trim, referred to the pressing comb as a “tool for self hate”. 🤔 I won’t even go there. I’d love to share your video in the group but she’d probably either erase it or wouldn’t approve it to begin with. The Conversation must continue!! So, from the coils who are very underrepresented THANK YOU
Thank you for making that clarification. You are one of the few true kinky, course hair texture RUclipsrs that keep it honest. Our texture is beautiful we need to embrace it and keep it moisturized. These ladies out here saying they are 4C like girl stop it lol.
I love all your videos. I use to look at people videos who had 4c type hair and I use to wonder how they hair so silky . I'm 4c and coarse hair I had to stop watching them. So now I only watch your videos.
FINALLY! INFO THAT MAKES SENSE!!!! I didn't know why I could never find my hair on those charts - I have strands that resemble 3 category, but I'm sure is 4a. My hair is very fine, soft and silky but knew no such thing as natural curls until I stopped using harmful hair products. Relaxers, heat, AND chemicals had me TV thinking my hair was semi coarse and 4c in texture. 4C is beautiful when healthy and maintained, but my damaged hair was like damaged 4c hair that felt like straw. It took me over a year to figure out why my hair was jacked up. DIY SAVED MY HAIR! The new hair growing from my scalp is very silky. I call my hair kinky/curly because I can easily rock a fro, but then take water and oil and turn the fro into curls. Being dark brown, many didn't understand my hair and thought it must be relaxed in some way. YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON TO EXPLAIN MY HAIR ACCURATELY - 4 CATEGORY, BUT SILKY. ALSO MY HAIR IS COILED NOT ZIGZAG, WHICH IS WHY I COULD NEVER FIND MY HAIR TYPE IN CHARTS - Thank you Sista Girl! You have a new SUBSCRIBER! You bet, I wanna see what more you have to say. THANKS A MILLION!🎀
This video is all FACTS!! Thanks for setting the record straight because I try to explain this to some people and they just dont get it! 😂😂😂 Thank you!!❤☺️
Thank you for this!!! I want you to know that you saved me from going back to a relaxer. I couldn’t understand why my hair wasn’t looking like the other RUclipsrs. Then I saw an older video that you did about: leaving my TWA alone, accept it for what it is, don’t keep manipulating it with different styles, and just wait patiently until it grows out! ❤️❤️🙌🏾
Hey friend 👋🏽 I love you and your channel. You are MY RUclipsr. You bring the truth about our hair. And you help us to accept the facts about 4c hair mixed textures and all. Thank you for being you ❤️❤️
I loved this video! This is exactly how I felt when I started going natural. Everyone claiming to be about that "4C life" but never broke a Goody comb with their "course kinky hair" LOL. And I did spend a grip on products hoping that it will make my hair like theirs and it didn't. Thank you for posting this video and keeping it 💯
Chazz, I enjoy your channel so much because you keep it real!! So many RUclipsrs have 4B&4C sistas believing are hair are the same and it’s not. Thanks for bring great content to your channel!!
I love this! I wondered why my hair still tends to look dry and fully understand it now that you've explained it. Thank you. I also appreciate the video where you say, "whatever your hair turns out to be that's the style you're gonna rock" (not those words exact but something like that). I LOVE my 4c hair and you've helped me through this journey 🤗
Ok you just put it out there and kept it real. I was just telling my friend this the other day. FINALLY, I found someone who understands. I'm late on the video, but I appreciate everything you said! ❣️❣️
Great, honest information- really explained a lot, as I am new to the natural journey. All these wash & go tutorials just leave me asking, "What's wrong w/ my hair?" Now I've been enlightened!!! Thanks
I just posted an entire rant on Facebook about my hair..it’s not gonna be shiny, I have a million strands, I don’t have curls. I no longer am swindled by product and I’m not putting a chemical in it to make it change. I don’t care what videos are out here. I’m not falling for them. 👍🏽🙌🏽
Great video! My photo is about 5 years old but I'm natural now. I love watching natural hair videos . In the beginning,I was taking everything in and didn't even know my poroxity. I became somewhat of a product junkie but not for too long because that is a waste of money. I have so called 4b hair and it's hard to moisturize but as long as it's healthy and growing,I'm good..........It's funny that you made a video speaking on this because I was looking at another RUclipsr earlier who has 4c and her hair was way more moisturized than mine has ever been,so now it makes sense why.Everyone hair is different and that is okay! This is also why I also use grease during my midweek rehydration.Like you stated,we all have different textures of hair and someone with a more wavier type may hate grease but my hair loves it. Basically "one" thing does not work for everyone and that is okay!
Yes girl, you’re speaking the truth! So glad you made this video! Makes sooooo much sense!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Love ya Chazzzz 💙 (Ps. Maybe do a part 2, and add the info for wavy hair? Tho if u choose to re-upload I’ll still rewatch!)
The BEST hair video I’ve ever seen on RUclips. For years I swore there was nothing I can do to get my hair like the people on RUclips. I always searched 4c hair, and thought I was crazy because no matter what I did or use my hair was still always frizzy and limp. Now I’ve learned that BABY MY HAIR AIN’T GONE DO ALLLAT 🤣🥴
I really related to this. I love watching halfricanbeaute’s youtube videos, even with me being a straight 4c girl. She always labels her videos as Type 4 and she has low porosity so I tried out a couple products that she swore by, hoping that maybe I’d see some improvement in my hair but that wasn’t the case. I’m still learning to love my hair, after being relaxed all my life and natural for 3 years, so it’s hard trying to convince myself that my hair type is just as beautiful as anyone else’s. I’m happy that I found you though. I’ve been searching high and low for a 4c natural hair influencer 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you👏🏽👏🏽 everytime I wear my fro people are always like "it looks so dry.. you should moisturize it more" 🙄🙄😒😒 it is VERY moisturized.. it's just not shiny like in ALL the ads and ig influencers
Finally! Someone is talking about this... I've got hairs with the same curl pattern but the texture is completely different. They even grow at a different rate. I think I've even got different porosity in different parts too... 😩
breezafun Me and mine all day long!!! Best explanation I have heard!!! Seriously time to truly embrace what ever is growing from your scalp. Curls coils and kinks get to know yours find out your porosity learn how to read your labels then you can narrow your products down. Save some coins and use them to take your crown all around the world cuz sis we spend major $$$ chasing that silky curl that was never meant to be! Me.... saving $$ on BF products 🏃♀️ to book that ✈️ !
Girl, I feel you. I'm super multi-textured. Like, different curl/coil types, different sizes, different textures (silky, cottony, spongy, and a pinch wiry), different clumping tendencies, different strand thicknesses, different shrinkage...and I too think they have different growth rates. It's crazy. I try to keep it in twists or buns (which I'm ok with). WNGs I enjoy sometimes too, tho, especially now that the longer sections can hide the spongy 4c bits that are by my ears. Disclaimer: not ashamed of the 4c, just like to get away with a uniform look vs. something mullet-inspired. For the record, my spongy 4c is the best "behaved" among my types.
Trinican Bee YEEEESSSSSS! I have silky and smooth then course and so not smooth! I have 5 distinctly different textures hi porosity but low porosity in my crown. Crown grows like a weed and tangles at the root ....what the! I have mastered the W&G... using clay treatments really helps get my entire front from hairline to the crown that is swavey to curl! Multiple stretching type techniques and product selection makes it all possible. Now that my hair is BSL it’s easier. But it was a challenge. My strands didn’t get the memo so initially my braid/twist outs look like a W&G cuz my strands separate so I have to twist/braid a couple of times to get that look. I really don’t have to separate it just untwist and within a few min it self separates my curls be like ME PHI ME😬 Initially I saw NO ONE with my hair type... times are changing. Oh least I forget my puff looks a bit weird cuz of the texture of the front it lays down instead of standing up and out but chile no one but me pays attention to all of that so I have learned to just accept it!
Im a graphic designer and I work with a couple natural hair care companies doing branding/packaging design and since working with them its been alot easier to treat my hair. In reading the info provided for the labels I learned that the whole 1-4 A, B & C thing is really useless and oversimplifies things. I have 4C hair but my hair is dense and medium porosity. Knowing my porosity and the density of my hair made a bigger difference in my natural hair care journey vs learning my curl pattern. Its more important to learn how to lock in moisture for 4C hair than anything.
*In this video I use the word coarse in the traditional sense dealing with roughness (I know you might not get it now but I will explain in further videos)....I accidentally left out WAVY in this video! Very, very well said. Some people may need photos to see the difference but I wouldn't say that you need to redo this video... I'm 3c 4a silky everywhere but the very front corners of my head are semi-silky.... I love watching your channel even though I don't have coarse hair you give a lot of great advice that I use.
Awesome vid, agree about the pics but i couldnt possibly ask you to redo it. Waayyy to much work
AWWW WELL THANKS FOR WATCHING!!! Google and Pinterest were really sucking that day. As many times as I’ve seen the particular photos I needed, they vanished the day I was editing this video 😑.
Yea I just couldn’t find the flipping photos any where ☹️.
Can you please do a video on how to get movement in natural hair? Thank you for helping me to better understand. Great video!
I wish they would change our hair type from "kinky" to "fluffy" like our hair be looking like clouds frfr 😂
Be like "I'm type 4 fluff out here ma'am" 👏🏾
I'm so glad you broke down this video, the ppl gotta know!
Yes I love the fluff 😹
Yeah that's a neat idea because when hair is moisturized properly, it's fluffy or at least that's how mine looks when the humidity gets into it there is no definition but it's just fluffy like cotton and soft.
You know, that's a GREAT IDEA! Sound way more appealing. We should make this happen. Especially since there's another meaning for kinky 👀
@@Chazzzisawesome yeah and for me, and it even the first thing ppl say when they see it. They're like wow it's so fluffy !
Afro Jazz omg I know! I call my hair fluffy idc lol
I LOVE YOUR INFO!!!!
YES COME THROUGH!!!
Picture would be so much help 🙏🏾
But ok ... I like the break down but now let’s elevate the cottony now let’s make them feel fabulous. I’m not sure if we are elevating them ... like are we still sending a negative tone ? Just reflecting
Thank you sis, i definitely have cottony type 4 hair, i always say it looks like a cotton ball.
I hate when they equate silky shiny with moisturized hair and if your hair doesn't shine it most not be mosturized. No, my hair is coarse and not silky but its plenty soft and mosturized.
Facts!!! I used to equate it to until I met some extremely coarse naturals who have no hint of shine and super soft hair.
This is true. I don't stress about my hair but I know my coarse hair doesn't define. Instead of twists outs I do twists in. 😄
Agreed! For years Ive lived in a twist out just because most of the youtubers I've found that do "natural hair" don't have my exact texture.
sheglows Yaassss🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You can’t see me put I’m standing on a chair giving you a standing ovation!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Lol can’t no body kink like us!😂
TRYING TO TELL YA!!!
Highkey was waiting on a picture of your brother's silky Type 4 hair
I was thinking about it but he keeps his hair braided. He also can’t take a decent selfie to save his life. I think I might just have him come onto my channel.
@@Chazzzisawesome That'd be great!😊
Thank you. Im 13 and just had my 4c eyes opened😂
Edit: thanks for 100 likes😊
I’m so glad I could help!!! 😹
😄
You are saving yourself years of heartache by opening them 4C eyes now lol. Mine are now opening in my thirties 😫😫
Your hair doesn't look dry and crunchy... it's looks soft and alive 😊
Aww thank you but I take pride in my crunchy hair. 😹 however it is soft though. It’s legit like cotton.
Like when she said that I'm Like Queen where
Thank you for this. 😏
Right!!! Definitely drop her video in the comments to help some people out! Sounds like she put a lot of hard work into that!
Video 1 Curl pattern: ruclips.net/video/U-DHBOKJfl0/видео.html
Video 2 Texture: ruclips.net/video/9wZ03RLah6I/видео.html
Video 3 Density: ruclips.net/video/CVpksnX-qTk/видео.html
Video 4 Thickness: ruclips.net/video/-1oksRDKUlU/видео.html
Video 5 Sebum (scalp): ruclips.net/video/_vb1nZbuQvY/видео.html

You said the word yourself; curve. The only hair that would fall under the porosity test would be dogs... Hair typing should be a bell-shaped scale
"The Science of Black Hair" by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy breaks down hair texture as Thready, Wiry, Cottony, Spongy. Also curl pattern is either, L, O, I, S shapes
Oh shizz thank you for sharing I’m going to look into this!
I def need to check this out!
It's a great book. It helped me a lot when I first went natural
Oh I forgot Silky. So it's Wiry. Thready, Cottony, Spongy and Sily
And yes you can have a combination of 2.
Type:
Fine, medium, course
Curl Pattern:
Straight, wavy, curly, coily, kinky
You can have course curly/juicy hair or fine kinky hair...
Literally.
And don’t forget hair texture lol: spongy, cottony, silky (for 4 type hair)
I have the coarse curly hair.
That silky, semi silky & non silky information has me shook.. never knew this!
YESSSSSSSS!!!!
YESSS!!!!
Some quick RUclipsr examples:
Silky 4a: Naptural85, eVaniwithaV, Halfrican Beaute, SistaWithRealHair (3c/4a), GlamTwinz (3c/4a)
Silky 4b/4c: NaturalTemi, Adanna Madueke, and any 4c person you have seen successfully do the wet look or slick back
Cottony 4a: Kimmaytube (cotton/silky combo), ULoveMegz (combo) and many others (most 4a seem to be silky or cotton/silky combo)
Cottony 4b/4c: You - Chazzzisawesome (combo)!, ChiziDuru, KandidKinks, and most of the youtube 4b/4c naturals
Coarse/Wiry 4b/4c: GlamFun (this is a rare hair type, especially on RUclips!)
Also, some people are a combination of categories as you noted.
one of the twinz actually has 3b/3c i think its kelsey her curls are more loose than kendras
Nikki Bruner is what for you ? She has 3c/4a hair but i don't know if they are cottony or coarse
Virtuenow I need to follow her then because I thought I had 4b to and some damaged hair because the front is wavy. But even when I big chopped the front is still wavy
This was a PSA to the internet world that y’all got Auntie Chaz messed up with y’all false advertising
LOW KEY 😹😹😹
YAASS!!! lol
I don’t feel like our hair looks dry and crunchy unless it is 😂
Nah 😹😹😹
You're the realest natural hair RUclipsr.
Awww thank you!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
YESSSS!!!
It looks coily when wet and kinks when it dries. My hair is confused. I really like your video. I have type 4 coarse hair. It makes sense. You're so awesome. I hope you and bear have a good day 🐻.
You can have a mixture of everything I mentioned and then some 😹 not uncommon in the least bit.
Aww thanks Chazzz
The Science of Black Hair" by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy breaks down hair texture as Thready, Wiry, Cottony, Spongy. Also curl pattern is either, L, O, I, S shapes
LeShea White same with me.
This is a good example of why we SHOULDN'T use the Andre Walker Hair Typing Chart. You've got a lovely head of hair Chazz.👌😍 9.10.19
😹😹😹
This video helped me realise that I have type 4 silky. I've been seeing a lot of type 4 coarse hair on RUclips, because all my siblings have the latter and so assumed I had the same thing. And I've been trying to find what too look for and you just helped me put a label on it. I thought I was just looking at the wrong hair type hair videos but i knew I was type 4 but not exactly what . THANK YOU, OH MY DAYS THANK YOU x
i’m a silky type 4 and my girlfriend is a coarse type 3. there really is a difference in the actual texture of your hair, even in looser curls
I’m trying to tell them 😹😹😹
Girl, I'm telling you, young and old need to hear this type of encouraging truth more than we even know.
Yesss!!!! Let me finish explaining though! I have to do part 2!
@@Chazzzisawesome yes please! 😭😭 would love to see it
There are styles for us Hun. ☺️ Puffs, Buns, Twists ins, Braids ins, Flattwists, Bantu knots in. 🤗💛🖤
Who are those RUclipsrs?
Can you please post a link to these silky 4c
I’m really glad you addressed this.
Yes! 😹😹😹
Thank you for making this video because I've been having low self esteem about my hair because I thought I was doing everything wrong.❤
NO NOT AT ALL YOUR FINE! Kinky coarse hair is beautiful you just have to treat her how SHE needs to be treated.
Another level of info that makes so much sense!
Awww thank you!!!
I love that you truly embrace all that is YOUR hair! People will love to try to put your hair in the box THEY want it to be in. Set em straight sis!
You are my favorite when it comes to breaking down our natural hair😊
I just want mine to look like Chazz's 😔
Same
No...that is not the goal. Your hair is like 10x more fire than mine because it’s one of a kind. Your the only one with that fro so better learn how to work it.
Girl you're doing God's work by clearing up these lies in the natural hair community 🙌🏾🙌🏾
😹😹😹 I’m trying!
She sure is!! Amen
Chazz, your hair is gorgeous. Is it wrong that I was waiting for an example of a silky "type 4"? 😂
RIGHT!!!! Sheesh I couldn’t find the photos I needed!!!! I’m thinking about tagging the videos I came across that went viral but I don’t want the creators to think I’m putting them on the spot or trying to be malicious. This is why I was thinking about refilming.
@@Chazzzisawesome I get it. Either way, this video was super informative, as always.
I am lewa and kaydee tv are the only ones I know with silky 4b/4c hair

No problem!
Facts. This video should go viral.
😹😹😹
Agreed!!!!!
Facts!!!!
Chazzzzzz--always rockin' the KNOWLEDGE! Thank you so much for sharing this!
No problem!!!!
One of the best Type 4C hair videos out here! You betta Preachhhh!!!
Yesss!
YES very important distinction between silky 4 and coarse 4. Thanks for posting!
No problem!!!
So, from the coils who are very underrepresented
THANK YOU
Thank you for making that clarification.
Awww thank you and that is exactly why I made this video.
Naturally Temi is one of the most underrated Natural hair youtuber!!! I see you 👀
"It's not a matter of 'scab hair'" THANK YOU for this! 🙏🏽😊
@TwinkleStar IKR? had people thinking their hair texture was wrong...smh
So much unadulterated truth! Bless you and this channel! I love rocking this unique beautiful hair! Keep up the beauty!
Your hair is looking good! Love your videos! 😊❤

Aww staawwwwppp your trying to make me cry and I don’t like it 😹 thank you so much for your nice comment!
I loved this video! This is exactly how I felt when I started going natural. Everyone claiming to be about that "4C life" but never broke a Goody comb with their "course kinky hair" LOL. And I did spend a grip on products hoping that it will make my hair like theirs and it didn't. Thank you for posting this video and keeping it 💯
Your hair is growing so long and beautiful. Thanks for caring.
Chazz, I enjoy your channel so much because you keep it real!! So many RUclipsrs have 4B&4C sistas believing are hair are the same and it’s not. Thanks for bring great content to your channel!!
This all makes so much sense now!! Thank you so much❤️
I love this!
Preach! New subby! Please do a lot more videos we needs this type of knowledge in the natural hair community!
Great, honest information- really explained a lot, as I am new to the natural journey. All these wash & go tutorials just leave me asking, "What's wrong w/ my hair?"
Now I've been enlightened!!! Thanks
Bear is back! 🥰 Love your informative videos 💞
Awww thank you!!! I’ve been trying!
A silky 4c hair RUclipsr is the chic natural. Her hair is so shiny, silky, and soft
I just posted an entire rant on Facebook about my hair..it’s not gonna be shiny, I have a million strands, I don’t have curls. I no longer am swindled by product and I’m not putting a chemical in it to make it change. I don’t care what videos are out here. I’m not falling for them. 👍🏽🙌🏽
You are literally the only type 4 natural youtuber that is relatable... You keep it REAL girl. 💯
Aww thank you!
Thanks for this ! This needed to be said !
Yup, I agree with everything you said, knowing your hair texture will help you manage your expectations...and you will be happier in the long run
Thank you! Porosity will always be way more important than any of this but just in case people were still wondering.
This video needs to be trending.. Its just that good.. Thank you.
Awww thank you!!!
Genetics is key!!! Thanks for keeping it real and for sharing!
No problem!!!
Preach chazz. Thanks for keeping it 💯.
No problem!!!
Your hair has grown so much!
“Can’t nobody kink like us” lol
Hilarious.. Your hair is beauteous!✨
This was a great explanation!! Thanks!! 😍
🙌🏾🙌🏾 Love ya Chazzzz 💙
(Ps. Maybe do a part 2, and add the info for wavy hair? Tho if u choose to re-upload I’ll still rewatch!)
I genuinely love how informative, innovative and non-conforming your videos are 🙌
Aww thank you!!!
This might all sound crazy but I’m trying to make the videos and break them all down as best I can.
Chazzzisawesome it makes sense. And I think it's better that way because then it's not information overload for us
You one of my favorite hair youtubers 💕💕
Awww thank you!
Yessss honey the best video I seen on natural hair thank you queen 💙
I appreciate this video so much! Everyone needs to see this 👌🏾💕✨!! Thanks, Chazzz 🙌🏾😄💕!!
Aww thank you!! I really appreciate it! To think I wasn’t going to post it 😹
Your hair grew so much!
I love your transparency! You’ve helped me to understand my hair better video by video. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m definitely glad I could help and thankful that you keep coming back! I really appreciate it!
Thanks for the examples with pictures!
Thank you👏🏽👏🏽 everytime I wear my fro people are always like "it looks so dry.. you should moisturize it more" 🙄🙄😒😒 it is VERY moisturized.. it's just not shiny like in ALL the ads and ig influencers
Cazzzzzzzzzzzzzz I'm loving this look girrrrlllllll!!!!!
Awww why thank you!!!
Omgeee this helped me so much. Ty for always doing your research 💛
This video was super informative. Thanks!
Your hair really grew😭😭😭😭❤️
Im a graphic designer and I work with a couple natural hair care companies doing branding/packaging design and since working with them its been alot easier to treat my hair. In reading the info provided for the labels I learned that the whole 1-4 A, B & C thing is really useless and oversimplifies things. I have 4C hair but my hair is dense and medium porosity. Knowing my porosity and the density of my hair made a bigger difference in my natural hair care journey vs learning my curl pattern. Its more important to learn how to lock in moisture for 4C hair than anything.
Chazz your haaaaiiiirrrr 😍😍😍
Aww thank ya! That was like a week old braid out 😹
