WOW, amazing what a difference this instantly makes! Reminds me of one of the core principals of yoga which teaches an awareness that our body is not a bunch of isolated parts, but rather one big, interconnected system. I've been asking my thumb to do it all when it should be a full body experience. Its so simple but so powerful! My mind is blown! Thank you!!!
Brooo boy am I glad I searched this! Two years of playing and skipping barre chords because of a screwed up ring finger… the elbow move just totally got my hand in a position where I can now be mediocre at barre chords too!!!
You forgot to tell people this technique requires a bit of finesse. If you pull your guitar like that you make the neck bend backwars which will make your chord go sharp depending how much u pull. Sometimes you see some guitarists do it as a vibrato effect by pulling on the neck. So the advice I could give is to practice to do this technique with the least amount of effort to make the barre chord ring out nicely. That will be the point where you dont pull too hard but still can make the chord sound clean.
I figured out this trick a little while ago and right away it helped me to start playing barre chords properly. for so long i was doing it all wrong and now i can finally start playing music without having to adjust chords
That's brill, great fun when you discover tricks by yourself!! It's funny isn't it, sometimes you don't need courses or anything like that..a few tips here and there. Good suggestion. Another would be to play fewer strings. If you're playing the E shape barre just play the top 5 strings. Trick question: how many G notes do you need to make a G chord? 2 are probably plenty. Better yet, triads are a better option. It all depends on the sound you're trying to get
dont pull to much, it will slow you down and you will struggle to change the chords because of to much tension. My best tip for barree chords: Get your guitar a nice setup. Most beginner guitars, especially acoustics have a way to high string height.
Making sure that the clearance of the strings from the fretboard is not too high is a great help. (Some people call this the ‘action’). Don’t buy a guitar if it is too high; if you do have one then carefully filing the piece that holds the strings away from the fretboard can help
For years ive either figured out a different way to play songs, or avoided them completely because of how much my hand cramps up from playing barre chords, im hoping this can change that, thanks for the help
Yeah I hear ya, here are 3 more things that could help your hand cramps: 1. Use lighter strings to begin (10 gauge) 2. Learn the G major barre chord first 3. Put a capo on the 1st fret to add some extra pushing onto the strings.. ..then do this video exercise, and piece by piece work on it, remove the capo when you feel ok to do so. These will help build small wins but build up bigger belief. You got this. Get on it and drop me an email at dave@theschoolofguitar.com in 30 days to let me know your progress. You got this!

Hopefully you might consider checking it out, the link is in my profile under "freebies"!
A tiny tip I just noticed for boney fingers. When your index finger cant quite squeeze a string or two for the full bar, you can kinda push or pull or finger back and forth. Itll feel like your trying to roll/ a pencil or straw up and down your fingers (like 🤌 -🫰) really fast but with the guitar neck/strings. Hope this helps 🤷♂️

Never played barr chords with the index finger' I've always thumbed over on the low E and A strings.... leaving 4 fingers to play chords/individual strings instead of 3 fingers. If you can learn to at least thumb over on the low E string it'll open up new possibilities and is less stress on the other fingers while playing barr chords.
Awesome tip Bryan! Yeah I do that too..the thumb is a useful aid. You sound like a knowledgeable guitarist..would love to have you join my free community (link in profile), I do a weekly live Q&A for group members! Hopefully see you there and thanks again for sharing.

Question: as a more advanced player who conquered barre chords forever ago, does this technique not create bad habits of tension in the shoulders? I learned to play barre chords by "rolling" the finger more onto the side and using the bony part rather than the padded bottom part. That was the trick that made them easy for me. This technique seems to be counter to all the other training I did to release tension in the body which was INTEGRAL to me being able to eventually unlock the effortless fluent playing I can do today...
If its a toss up between tension in the body and making a barre chord sound clear, many players will pay that small price and then address tensions later. Great to hear you conquered barre chords, have you any barre chord videos up on youtube with your approach? If so, share it beneath this comment, I'm sure it could help other players.
@@TheSchoolOfGuitar I've always wanted to start a guitar instruction channel but I'm always discouraged because there are already a million of them. The trick I used came from an old school Justin Guitar video.
There's a few caveats to this comment. * Not everyone can roll their finger to the side. * Finger shapes vary. Some people, like me, have valleys on the fingers that reduce pressure on the string there. Such people may need to use more pressure than you use. * This tip may help starters and a few years down the road, when they are ready for advanced skills like you, the barre chord is no longer a challange. * Most players will never aspire to your advanced skills but would still like to play. I suspect many star singers in the top 40 do not have the level of fluidity and lack of effort you mention. John Denver, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Christopher Cross, Michael Nesmith, Dave Grohl, uh....Elvis... not to mention any punk rocker like Sid Vicious or Billy Idol. Not everyone can be or has to be Mark Knopfler!
For me it’s harder to play barre cords because the middle strings don’t vibrate unless I have other fingers on the frets up further from my Barr finger. Like barre A cord is harder than a B barre
