- Simple way to call up earthworms with a Worm Rattler and how to make yourself one. Great for getting bait for fishing or for your garden. This tool goes by many different names. Such as a Worm gitter, Worm Grunting, Worm stick, and a WORM RATTLER. This video is how it works and how to use it. Plus how to make your own. You can get worms by electric shock and chemicals, but you will damage the worms and they will possibly die. This way will not hurt the worms in anyway. Thanks for watching. I just recently subscribed and I love this channel! I could sit for hours listening to you tell us how our forefathers lived. My husband would’ve loved this contraption!! I haven’t fished since he passed away in 2006. Thanks for sharing!! Blessings always! ❤️✝️
Awesome my friend. Welcome to the channel. Thank you. Glad you enjoy them.
My father raised worms in beds. He used something similar to your rattler as well. He told me the reason it always worked is the worms drown when it rains if they stay under the ground during the rain so the come up and after the rain they go back down. So the rattler makes the sound and vibration like rain drops. Enjoyed your video.
Awesome my friend. Thanks for sharing this.
I could listen to you talk all day long♡ reminds me of my pepaw
Thanks for the comment my friend.
Mighty nice piece of woodworking. We call it gruntin' for worms where I'm from and drive a stake in the ground and rub a piece of iron across it preferably an ole' leaf spring off a old car. In fact in the town of Sopchoppy, FL they have a worm gruntin festival every year.
Thanks for sharing this my friend.
Since nightcrawlers live deeper in the soil, is it possible that more nightcrawlers emerge with the larger wood and flatiron because the vibration goes deeper? Thanks for sharing! The invasive worms are destroying our forests so I think this method may help to remove them.
@@bethanybriggs6125invasive worms? What? lol
Guy's this really works. Hope you enjoy.
Good work
@@Sylus1k Thanks for watching.
I made a portable worm shocker from a 12v backup battery from cable box and 120v inverter from harbour freight 2 metal rods wooden handles of course put it all inside old tackle box and take it out after a good rain to get my worms, works great !
Thanks for sharing my friend.
Most interesting. I’ve always dug for earthworms. I’m curios I’m gonna give this rattler a try. Thanks! - Tennessee Smoky
Your very welcome. Thanks for sharing my friend.
I'll be a son of a gun! I built one like yours in 10 minutes and was able to call up a nightcrawler on the first try. Thanks!
Your welcome. Have fun.
That's the neatest thing I think I've ever seen , much appreciated Donnie x I'll sure put it to good use
Your very welcome. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Shared this one in my YT community! They love the Southern Tawkers and I'm sure this is something many would do well to know one day.
Thanks for sharing my friend.
My grandmother had this kind of thing when we were kids this is how she taught us to get worms when we went fishing she also said they come up because the vibration makes them think it’s heavy rain an they come up to go to higher ground to keep from drowning..also my grandfather was a commercial fisherman..
Your grandfather was a wise man. He would be exactly right my friend. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Donnie, great video! A friend of yours sent me here from another channel. I've tried cutting down small trees in several areas using the other method, and sticking a stick in the ground and tapping or beating on it like crazy, each way got nothing. Now I think I understand, make a rattler, (love the handle on top idea), and try different places. Really appreciate this!
Welcome my friend. Glad to hear from you. The trick to this is getting to where the worms are. After that it's fun calling or should I say rattling for them. Thanks for the comment my friend.
This would have been great when I was younger. My mom always wanted my sis and I to dig worms for her Oscars, and I do mean dig. Those Oscars ate all the time and needed lots of worms everyday. Needless to say I don't have any of those fish. You have a great day
Thanks for sharing my friend.
If I hadn’t seen it I never would believe it! Thanks Donnie!
We used to use a bow drill. Like what you make fire with to. Get worms , and we called it fiddling for worms. Some times it works some time it don't. I always was told it was the vibrating of the ground. That's done it. You can cut a little sapling. And leave the root in,the ground and vibrate it too to get worms. My dad. Would say lets go fiddling for worms. We get a bow drill and take off in,the woods. But you got to know where there at first. I Spect any think that vibrates the ground would do though,,,
That' great. Never tried that one. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Perfect bait size for native trout Donnie. Thanks for sharing.
Your very welcome. Thanks for sharing my friend.
I’ve done that before with a handsaw and a small bush.... cut a small bush down about 2 inch diameter and then saw across the top making a vibrating sound... and they will come to the top of the ground... we call it fiddling worms here in north Georgia.... thanks buddy...
Thanks for sharing that trick my friend. I have seen that done and it does work. Thanks for the comment.
Yea only we used a bow drill like what you use to make fire with. And set it on the ground you ain't trying to,make fire but as you pull back and forth it vibrates the ground. And because its similar to sawing on a fiddle we called it fiddling for worms,, ,,,
Homesteaders need to subscribe to this channel. Lots of good stuff 👍🏻
Your old neighbor here in Bristol. When I lived in NC along the edges of the coastal plain and Piedmont, we called it worm fiddling and we did it differently, but then the soul their was very different. Good video brother!
Thanks for sharing this my friend.
Yep this thing is awesome. I did not believe it at first but sure enough it works.
Worms are on the top of the list for fish bait.
Love the videos :)
Thanks for sharing my friend.
I’ve heard of this but, never have seen it happen. So cool.
Give it a try my friend.
Wow! if I didn't see it with my own two eyes I wouldn't have believed it. I WILL be getting worms for my garden for sure. Thanks Donnie for this tip. your friend , Louise
Simulates the sound of a pouring rain so the worms leave the ground so they won't drown.
I agree. That is what they thinks happening. Thanks for commenting.
@@donnielaws7020 We see birds stamping on the ground to accomplish the exact same result.
@@vdhorstmo Nature knows all the tricks. Thanks for commenting.
@@vdhorstmo I heard that it sound like a pig grunting and a mole digging for worms

Wow. Learn something everyday and so thankful for it!
Your so welcome friend.
Well, just when I thought I'd seen it all, lol, thanks Donnie.
I've never seen nor heard of this before Donnie. But as they say "proof is in the pudding". I'll have to show this trick to my granddaughters. They love fishing. Thanks my friend.
Your very welcome my friend. It really works.
In North Florida , around Sopchoppy, they call this Worm Grunting.
Awesome my friend.
Yes it really works thanks for showing us, good job👍🏼
You’re welcome 😊
How cool. I'm gonna make one and see if I can't find some worms. Thanks Donnie.
Thanks so much you did a awesome demonstration!! I'm gonna make me one .
Your welcome my friend. Glad you enjoyed it.
Something quite novel and a fun video! My guess is that the "rattle" may sound like raindrops hitting soil, so the worms surface to prevent drowning.
Guessing, of course -
I think so to my friend. Thanks for commenting.
Actually the vibrations are similar to those made by a mole hunting underground, so they emerge. Scientifically proven!
Donnie I used buy night crawlers to fish with and what I had left over I would take to my compost pile and bury them and now there thriving there I’m going to make me one those sticks because that’s better than digging them thanks for the tip!!❤😅
Awesome my friend. Thanks for sharing. Your very welcome.
I'm an old country boy but had never heard of a worm rattler. Now I think I've seen it all!
I was the same way my friend. I still can't believe it works. Thanks for sharing this.
Awesome man I’m gonna try it and if your from Tennessee we have night crawlers just after a rain go out with a flashlight at night you’ll find them
Done that to many a time growing up. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Right after a rain is a good time to go fidling for worms. There already near the top of the ground,,,
Had to share it with my grandson. 🤗
Mate! This is a revelation! Bloody blows my mind
What blow my mind is that it works. Thanks the comment. Hello over there my friend.
Enjoyed again, Donnie
멋지네요^^ 한번 시도를 해봐야겠어요
Thanks.
Gonna try this with my Grandson. Thanks for the old times way’s Donnie.
Your very welcome my friend.
Wow!! Great video-this is amazing I'm definitely going to try this! I'll never pay for worms again 🤞🏼🎣 Thanks Donnie! ❤ Just subscribed to your channel 👍🏽
It really does work. Just remember its not the calling them that's the problem. It's the finding where they are at to call. Thanks for commenting.
Can wait to try i have some places in my yard i might draw some up
Thank you for sharing this awesome video, I absolutely love it 🍻👍🍻
Your welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.
Awesome worm call Donnie
I prefer wrigglers over night crawlers any day
Wrigglers have a very distinct smell that fish can’t resist
Thank you my friend.
Great! Now I can call the worms out before I start digging a hole in the ground. This way I can prevent them from getting killed in the process of digging a hole and preserve the worms.
There you go. Thanks for the comment.
Well I'll be... I've never seen anything like it before! Neat.
Thank you friend.
That's the neatest thing! I have learned something new!
Hope this helps you friend. It really works.
@@donnielaws7020 I look forward to trying it. I will pass this info on to some others!
We call it fiddling for worms down here in southern Tennessee .cut a small tree 2 or 3" down about a foot above the ground and take ur handsaw and cut grooves into the tree on top of it.
That is another great ideal my friend. Sounds like a easy way. Thanks for sharing this way of making them. Thanks.
This is called Worm Grunting. I works better if you use a 1in / 2in wood stick about 3 foot long. You cut one end with a point to drive in the ground and the other end is cut FLAT as possible, and drive the wood into the ground at least 1 foot but 2 feet works better. Then you use a FLAT piece of METAL and move it across the flat top of the wood to make a whining/grunting sound. It imitates a MOLE sound when it forages for food and causes the worms to flee to the surface in self preservation (instinct). Has been used for centuries to get worms.
Mostly forgotten because in modern times people just buy bait from tackle stores now.
Edit: (for a trick that works too) Once you get your worms do this. works best at small ponds and creeks. Drive your grunter into the ground about 4 feet from the bank you are going to fish and work it for about 1 minute. This will bring up more worms for your bait but ALSO bring up some worms out in the water where you are about to fish.
This is just like CHUMMING the water. Worms have a strong scent and having some come to the surface out in the water will attract fish to the bank where you are about to fish and you will catch LOTS more fish. Hope this info helps some of you out.
Good Luck!
Wow that's a great ideal my friend. Thanks so much for sharing your technique. I will try that out for sure.
@@donnielaws7020 Thanks for the reply. Your method is awesome too, but like you stated in your video works best in organic, solfter soil. I use the stick/dowel method too at some spots but I fish others that have clay and harder soil and the 2 inch small stick about 3 foot long driven in the ground and then using a piece of metal about 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick at 1 foot long (weighs about 10 pounds!!) works better for me in harder soil and brings up worms from farther away. Sometimes 10 to 15 foot away.
Nice to see a youtuber actually respond to a fans comment. I have subbed and enjoy your videos.
@@donnielaws7020 By the way, I'm East Arkansas fisherman.

It's funny it sounds like your stick telling the worms (back it up) over and over ! I have started two worm boxes out of totes! I saw your how to video of how to build one and I thought I had never saw one before! It looks like fun and I think you for the info and I don't have a small belt sander an I will try using a hand disk sander and cant wate to try it!

Ive heard this is why robins (birds) hop when they are hungry. It makes the worms think its raining and they come up to not drown.
Thanks for sharing this my friend.
I’ve seen them but I seen ones you run the flat piece across the end of the big part.
a mod in da game Vintage Story (Primitive Survival mod) added worm grunters and after testing it ingame I had to google if this is a thing irl xD
They sure are small. Around here we get those big old night crawlers. Just across from me is a golf course. It’s a great spot. Thanks.🇨🇦👍
They are around these woods for sure. I use to get the big night crawler on LMU's campus yards like you get them at the golf Course. I know exactly what you mean my friend.
It makes the sound of rain to the worms which would drown the worms if they did nothing so they wiggle up to the surface to find high ground.
That sounds right to me also my friend. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed your video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've heard that the vibrations resemble that of a mole digging down, so the worms come up, to avoid being eat.
That and Rain my friend.

Awesome to see I enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend. It's fun when you find the worms.

I never could find many big worm’s around pine trees I figured it was the acid or something in the tree

I wish I had little worms like these in my yard! I don't fish or intentionally mess around with any kind of bug if I can help it, so I don't know what kind of worms they are, but these stupid things I got out here scare me to death when I'm working in the flower beds! I'm not exaggerating when I tell you they are every bit of 8-10" long! I'm constantly mistaking them for baby snakes at a glance and dang near giving myself a stroke. I live in the middle of thousands of acres of crop land, beans and corn, here in Western Kentucky. I thought I'd seen every kind of bug and worm known to man when I lived in the middle of the woods but no...I don't know if it's got something to do with the crops and all the nonsense they spray and put on the ground or what, but the array of bizarre insects I come across out here is almost enough to make me say to hell with it and just stay in the house! I'm obviously not a big person lol I can tolerate most of them EXCEPT for spiders and this ground is over-run with wolf spiders galore. Some almost as big as my hand and they ain't a bit scared of a person, they'll run right at you. Wish these giant worms would gobble those dang things up 😂
Thanks for sharing my friend.
