Cop Land: Is This Sylvester Stallone's Most Underrated Performance?

  • 1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era's biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies -Cop Land - as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

    I remember back in the day, how "everyone" talked about this film, and how Stallone plays oscar worthy PLUS Keitel, DeNiro and all the other great actors, but for me (and the narrator obviously) the absolute standout performance was delivered by Ray Liotta - fantastic film and yes it does stand the test of time, it's a classic.

      I think Rocky V is his best performance bar none. It’s brilliant in its range and the effort it must have taken to get every detail of a brain-damaged Rocky down blows my mind. Anyone who disagrees with me, rewatch the movie and focus specifically on his demeanor, mannerisms and speech.

    Copland is one of Sylvester Stallone's most underrated movies and one of the best that he has ever made in the Drama Category. Ray Liotta is also a standout as his only best friend the coked up Cop Figgsy. What you forget to mention aswell as the Sopranos cast featuring here, it is also a Goodfellas Reunion with De Niro and Liotta as IAD cop Mo Tilden and as mentioned the aforementioned coked up Figgsy. I give it 9/10 Stallone's.

It showed that he has some range as an actor and performer, even though the cast was super loaded with a who's who of actors in the '90s and beyond Great story that had some truth to it that I heard was based off of a true story. Loosely back when performers and actors really cared about material instead of the quick cash grab

    I remember waking out of theater after watching this thinking it was the best thing Stallone had done since Rocky. I have watched it a couple of time since & it does hold up very well & even though I know how it will end it's suspense holds up on rewatching. All the actors are very good while it is not like the innovative changes seen in Pulp Fiction I think in many ways it is a real piece of classic western cinema in a unique setting. When I watched it again a few years later I thought it would be interesting to have a sequel to see how Freddy's future pans out. GREAT MOVIE!

  • @efan2012
    @efan2012 11 месяцев назад +6

    Love this movie, glad you do too. I think a lot of the reason for it's failure to launch was due to useless over-expectations. People expected it to be the next Pulp Fiction and it wasn't anywhere close to being it due to how different types of movies they were. People foolishly expected that and when it wasn't a pop culture juggernaut like PF was, it turned them off. It never was designed to be, it was meant to be a character study, and look at how corrupt the police can be and in those ways it works beautifully. It was ahead of it's time in that way and it's aged really well.
    I also highly suggest the Director's Cut which is the only cut on the Lionsgate Blu Ray of the movie. WAY superior imo to the theatrical cut. That cut wasn't as complete due to Weinstein being Weinstein and forcing his way into the editing room. He messed the flow up and character development which helped the plot way more. The Director's cut fixes that. Liotta gets way more time which imo helps the movie a lot, Figgs is explored way more. Freddie also is more developed and everything he does is straight up heroic instead of him being petty to Ray. 1:15 especially is way better in that cut, as it's the first real time he stands up to Ray and it's the moment Freddie finds his courage, huge moment that the original cut left out. The only thing I don't like is the ending as it's too brief but it was worth sacrificing to get everything else.
