Their set at Glastonbury was amazing. Brilliant poetry, spat out furiously to a driving tribal beat. They are the sound of austerity Britain. A tonic for this oppressed nation.
Paul Vallance oppressed nation? Oh well there was a general election back in May and oddly enough a greater percentage of the population voted Tory - still that's democracy for you (democracy in a right-wing country)
Really solid genuine lads I like it doing what they want and what they like it's inspiring not conforming to any stereotype just doing there thing poetic hard-core street lyrics brilliant
Top quality interview ... considering the masses of obscure 'working class' street and 'TV' culture references in SM's music, it's incredible how people abroad still get it.
As someone from Nottingham I can state that the line from Jake Bugg's song referred to here, Trouble Town, "Stuck in speed bump city where the only thing that's pretty is the thought or getting out" - doesn't refer to the whole of Nottingham. Speed Bump City is a reference to Clifton, a huge council estate on the edge of Nottingham where Jake is from. There are a lot of speed bumps there so Jake is talking about Clifton, not Nottingham as a whole. In the Trouble Town video you can see images of Clifton like the speed bumps on the road and Clifton Block, a high-rise block of flats.
I guesss thats the point, keeping it as simple as possible, 'to the point' so to speak. Much like you Andrew has produced a lot of music already, which probably costs him a lot of time to do. Might aswell enjoy the fruits of your labour on stage, right? Besides, picking up a bass would be no good for him because the looped and edited bits have a certain sound to them which cant always be recreated (think of fingers slipping, certain notes being louder or softer like in a song as Tarantula Deadly Cargo) Everyone already knows he's a talented guy ;)
I see your point, but I like it. If every tom, dick and harry started doing it, itd be shit/boring. Hes no Bez though, be should get some more dance moves like Bez then ppl wouldn't care that he doesn't play anything. ha
Because the U.K. is at least honest about their class structure. In the U.S., we are deluded to believe we are a "classless" society. …I guess we are, but in a different sense.
Well, in American's defense, we did have a very successful Red Scare and we have never had a labor party. So by the design of the ruling class, there's no longer any real class consciousness at the bottom.
Kind of odd that the interviewer says only the UK have a working class. They definitely aren't the only ones though. Here in America it's the same deal.
Yeah country has a working class, but here it extends into every social aspect of life as well not just employment. Like the interviewer said, if you're from outside of the UK then it's hard to understand, but it's something we've had since time began, it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be but it's still prevalent.
allll my life been living in murica. pew pew. initial first few minutes were awkward , due to interviewer, interviewee clash. props to both, interviewer asked some, silly open ended questions and it worked. very engaging. Allowed for flowing bant. eloquent and well spoken lads.
Interviewer could have been better prepared by actually analyzing the music first and piecing together why it was done, rather than to ask cliched questions to people who get this shit all the time.
Maybe the interviewer was just tryina get things straight, like hear it from the horse's mouth kinda thing... what do you fuckin care about the interviewer
why would he say that people outside the UK don't know what working class is? of course they do. oh yeah, unless they are kids of rich parents that don't live on their own yet
gornes I think its because the class system in the UK is quite unique. Outside the UK, especially in N. America the class system is often just based on financial income whereas in the UK it has more to do with values and culture.
Manchester and then Britain, had the worlds first industrialisation, mass urbanisation and thus the worlds first industrial proletariat working class...our history and culture is steeped and defined by it, more so than any other nation. Add that to our overtly tribal nature that goes back thousands of years and has been exacerbated by the numerous invasions we've had - hence the huge vairety of accents on Britain and Ireland - and you have a class system that is unique to this country. Marx and Engels based all their writings on what was happening in Manchester, and what they write has defined economics and politics globally ever since. Don't underestimate the power of the class system. How else do people like Cameron and Boris get in power? Jay and Andrew are terrific exponents of it, whether they want to be or try to be or not. What matters is that people feel their music because it's real. And the reason middle class people like working class music - which had happened ever since ever, it's nothing new, how do you think blues and jazz never mind rock punk and hiphop became mainstream - is that they can feel its real, and more interesting than their lives. And that's ok
+gornes simracing Indeed. The concept of the working class factory workers who are less than the high income workers and vanity are rather common ways of thinking in multiple European (continent) based nations too.
Im from Russia and I want to say - I dont really understand lyrics by Sleaford mods, but I respect-n-loved him))) REAL COOL COOL music. Grand RUSSIAN thanks to Grand english guys
Ps as for Jake Bugg I think he's a class act for his age too he's ahead of his time and I love the lyrics in his music too they hit a nerve he's closer to Bob Dillan than burrell hee hee
Sadly in Germany we don't. All seems washed up and indifferent. The "Left" act like they're on another planet. All the other parties are simply opportunists. Well, I guess this is not only happening in Germany.
"people outside the uk dont know what that is...working class, upper class...what is he talking about?!?!?! is he is dutch?!lol...maybe there is no working class in holland...only upper class..?i feel sorry for some artists and especially for sleaford mods having to deal with this...
everywhere is shit hole unless you live in the wealthier area, Nottingham has its good and bad areas. The irony is though that the shit-holes are the best places to live, the is no life in the posh areas.
I am still convinced Andrew is actually Will Self letting his hair down! Well, your disguise doesn't fool me... You even sound like him, which is why I guess why you try to not say too much. keep up the great work, Your secret is safe with me.
I'm not criticising universities - well why should you, they're the main ones who'll have you. Not political warriors? Cut the pro-proletariat glorifying crap then. It could appeal to someone who is rich who was working class - yeah - well that does sound like the order of the day, or the bias nowadays
A breath of fresh air are these lads.
they are indeed. The first band in ages with something to say.
Their set at Glastonbury was amazing. Brilliant poetry, spat out furiously to a driving tribal beat. They are the sound of austerity Britain. A tonic for this oppressed nation.

starts the interview by insulting one of the members...its not easy writing music and touring.

ave it, lads. you deserve it!
I really like these guys. They see it as it is. As it really is. Bang on.
It's always funny when some middle class foreign person declares only the UK has issues with class.
@@wj2429 spot on...
Everywhere is rooted in classism..
Well, in American's defense, we did have a very successful Red Scare and we have never had a labor party. So by the design of the ruling class, there's no longer any real class consciousness at the bottom.
His commenting on how the class system is so obvious in the UK.
as a turkish guy binging through sleaford mods interviews, seeing babazula hanging out in background felt mildly proud.
I bought a couple of their albums while in Istanbul. Good stuff, great city.
bloody hell...jay was my boss back in the day!! what a character...i could tell a tale or too :) glad he's doing well!!

It's different. In the UK you can make a lot of money but you will still be seen as working class. Class, is your identity here, your birth.

Bob Blackadder isn't that Japan too.
I'm pretty sure Mexico fully understands what the working class is..

Spent a week in Nottingham, quite liked it.
Coming from Nottingham, the phrase 'It's a shithole, but it's home' rings so true.

Student and middle class are two different things
The worst interviewer ever. He started the interview by insulting one of the members without even realizing that he creates the music...
Andrew is baked proper and wondering how he will turn that interviewer into one of his groupies. top!
people who dare to haVE CHARACter ,,, in an age where we are being droided out

Of course there's working class people outside of the UK. And they use the term ''Working Class'' too. Lol gimme a break. This interviewer, man.

Not really. It's definitely a Brit thing.
