There are pros and cons to Scottish independence. But it’s becoming more clear that there are certainly more pros than there are cons. There will be some pain. That pain will be magnified enormously by the English Conservatives in their print and broadcast media. But whatever small amount of pain is experienced or perceived initially, it’ll disappear quickly and Scotland will thrive and be a successful and prosperous independent Nation. 62 countries have gained their independence from Westminster for example the Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc. Many other countries around the world have gained their independence for example Norway from Sweden, Czech Republic and Slovakia etc. They all have a currency, defence forces and trade with other countries etc. Being an independent country is normal. Being a country like Scotland controlled by a neighbouring country is abnormal.
One thing that gets me, people say Scotland would be too poor and run a deficit so can't afford things, has anyone looked at the UK borrowing for the last 50 years? Westminster borrows beyond its means every year which is fine but Scotland doing so even temporarily is not acceptable?
Scotland doesn’t run a deficit, it also has no debt. By Law Scotland has to have a balanced budget every year. Any deficit attributed to Scotland (and indeed Wales ad NI), is a portion of the deficit run up by the Westminster Government. The UK debt ( currently heading north of £2.3TRILLION), is entirely the responsibility of the UK Government.
@@tamkofta151 yes I'm aware of how it works, my point being that people use that arguement as a some sort of massive barrier to Scotland operating independently when in reality every country uses borrowing to smooth out spending or when putting money into large scale projects especially in infrastructure and defence. The main difference being that the UK runs so much debt it now spends over £40Bil per year on just the interest alone, it's now in a cycle of repaying the minimum and borrowing more despite austerity measures. The debate about debt share and fixed assets is one for another day, nobody knows how that situation would work out with pensions, military equipment and financial reserves along with debt as that would be subject to negotiation.

If Scotland became independant, it would not automatically, nor directly, be accepted into the EU; There is a test period for their own independence, just like any other member state, that needs to be assessed before that even becomes an option. I think it was like 3 years or so, but I could be wrong. It's not as if the moment it left the UK, the EU would automatically take over the benefits it enjoys from the UK right now (such as they are).

The English voted themselves into third country status, way to go England. The Scots with their oil, young population, and fear of debt would stand them in stead if they voted to become independent. The question I have is what to do with the border with England. England is Scotland's largest trading partner. If Scotland rejoins Europe will it require border guards, etc. I am for Scotland's independence but lest get all the facts worked out. No SNP hype.

If Scotland became independent and re-joined the EU, its trading patterns would change quite quickly - as is presently being seen in Northern Ireland. Also, there would not need to be border guards - the movement of people would almost certainly remain unchanged as both Scotland and England (along with Ireland) are members of the Common Travel Area. There may be customs checks and paperwork at the border which may cause delays in trade, but won't stop it. And remember, the EU and UK have signed a free trade deal so these delays would be no worse than being experienced in Belfast and Larne today.

I think you should leave that to the economists, if what the guys in that video say is remotely true or possible then an independent Scotland will be ok. If they are wrong then an Independent Scotland will be the first independent nation to fail itself. One thing I never read about Scotland and independence, Scotland has no deep water ports. On the east coast you Dundee, Leith, Aberdeen, Rosyth, Grangemouth, but none are deep water which means imports and exports would still have to go via England. I'm a great advocate of Scottish independence.

The sovereign, meaning the person or group with the monopoly of violence in a given polity, decides what is and isn't true regarding the currency. Nations aren't reducible to economic mechanisms, man does not live by bread, alone.
My concern is the long, even medium~term, value of oil, given the Green issues related to hydro~carbons. The shortages resulting from the war in Ukraine may give it a new lease of life, for undesirable reasons, but it remains a source of income that should not be relied upon.

NS oil revenues is less than 1% GDP yet Jim Rodgers, who confusingly gets the UK, England, and Great Britain mixed up, seems to think it's a lot bigger than it actually is. In 2020 120 wells were closed and 60 opened, 1600 wells are set to be decomissioned in the next 6 years or so. Impossible to calculate the impact of big business moving South or the losses caused by their biggest customer (England, Wales and N.Ireland) looking for new sources of goods. Defence spending in Scotland would be decimated if all shipbuilding goes to new yards. One thing is for certain, nothing is certain.

Do we want to benefit Russia? If Scotland leaves the UK I am in no doubt that our relationship with England will sour much further. The UK will NEVER be welcomed back into the EU and similarly Scotland will NEVER be welcomed back into the Union. Whether Scotland would be welcomed by the EU is anyones guess and in no ways a certainly. Hence we should be extremely careful before leaving and not trust those who seek to manipulate us to their gain, whomever they are. Remember, we as voters in the UK have been very easily fooled in the past on many issues and I suspect that this will end up similarly.

All future action has to involve clarity on the currency, and it's not difficult for Scotland to set up its own, without heavy debts, such as England's 3 Trillion National Debt... more than half of which accumulated by the Tories in the past decade. It happens when a larger force meets a smaller one, and the smaller one is subjugated. It's happened many times through history. Geography and serendipity are important factors too. England was invaded latterly by the Normans, and it's people were subjugated for several centuries. However, they regained their position, as the authority in their own country. The English language also replacing French and Latin as the Lingua Franca.

If Scotland became independant, it would not automatically, nor directly, be accepted into the EU; There is a test period for their own independence, just like any other member state, that needs to be assessed before that even becomes an option. I think it was like 3 years or so, but I could be wrong. It's not as if the moment it left the UK, the EU would automatically take over the benefits it enjoys from the UK right now (such as they are).

The English voted themselves into third country status, way to go England. The Scots with their oil, young population, and fear of debt would stand them in stead if they voted to become independent. The question I have is what to do with the border with England. England is Scotland's largest trading partner. If Scotland rejoins Europe will it require border guards, etc. I am for Scotland's independence but lest get all the facts worked out. No SNP hype.

If Scotland became independent and re-joined the EU, its trading patterns would change quite quickly - as is presently being seen in Northern Ireland. Also, there would not need to be border guards - the movement of people would almost certainly remain unchanged as both Scotland and England (along with Ireland) are members of the Common Travel Area. There may be customs checks and paperwork at the border which may cause delays in trade, but won't stop it. And remember, the EU and UK have signed a free trade deal so these delays would be no worse than being experienced in Belfast and Larne today.

However, they will need to accept that Scotlands greatest asset is not oil, but the people. The people who withstood the vikings, the romans, who were the driving force behind roman technology and the industrial revolution, and in a free scotland there will be no time for the celtic v rangers disputes, they would need to be put to bed. Cause history shows, when you have a highlander, lowlander, and an Irish perosn working on a problem, you get solutions.

Since when are the EU looking to add economic basket cases to their ranks, and how does that Greek economic situation impact on their membership of the EU? Might we not better examine the figures and projections for the economic prospects for an independent Scotland given the current GDP %age deficit, as compared to rUK’s current rate? And how exactly roughly 2million(the taxpaying sector of the roughly 5.5million, ageing population) will service and reduce this debt, oil or no?
I think you should leave that to the economists, if what the guys in that video say is remotely true or possible then an independent Scotland will be ok. If they are wrong then an Independent Scotland will be the first independent nation to fail itself. The only people wanting to deny them that right are those at Westminster and they run the government in a far worse manner than any non-Union Scottish Party.

One thing I never read about Scotland and independence, Scotland has no deep water ports. On the east coast you Dundee, Leith, Aberdeen, Rosyth, Grangemouth, but none are deep water which means imports and exports would still have to go via England. I'm a great advocate of Scottish independence.

The sovereign, meaning the person or group with the monopoly of violence in a given polity, decides what is and isn't true regarding the currency. Nations aren't reducible to economic mechanisms, man does not live by bread, alone.
My concern is the long, even medium~term, value of oil, given the Green issues related to hydro~carbons. The shortages resulting from the war in Ukraine may give it a new lease of life, for undesirable reasons, but it remains a source of income that should not be relied upon.
I'm more concerned Westminster are after our renewable energy and if we don't get out of this toxic tory dictatorship they'll bleed us dry of that next

A military spend similar to Noway would save Scotland nothing, it would cost them, the british armed forces don't come out of the Scottish block grant so doesn't cost them a thing where as they're benefitting from taxes from those within the scottish borders. If they wanted to join nato and have 2% gdp spend it will all of a sudden cost them £4 billion which won't do much to start from fresh. Considering the divorce bill, drop in trade etc they'll be £200 billion in debt on day one, i doubt they'll have money for armed forces so go neutral like Ireland and let the UK take responsibility while allowing scottish people to continue to serve. Sturgeon, although she's leaving, didnt want trident in scotland either, so it's possible the naval bases are or were planned to be something else. The oil arguement is valid but nothing will change, all oil revenues and taxes go to scotland with the scottish block grant, nothings stopping them extract their own oil now but it wont happen. NS oil revenues is less than 1% GDP yet Jim Rodgers, who confusingly gets the UK, England, and Great Britain mixed up, seems to think it's a lot bigger than it actually is. In 2020 120 wells were closed and 60 opened, 1600 wells are set to be decomissioned in the next 6 years or so. Still, like brexit, i'd probably risk leaving... although i regret voting for that now so i dont know what that says about my voting intentions lol

Impossible to calculate the impact of big business moving South or the losses caused by their biggest customer (England, Wales and N.Ireland) looking for new sources of goods. Defence spending in Scotland would be decimated if all shipbuilding goes to new yards. One thing is for certain, nothing is certain.

I simply don't trust any economist from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Eire or Europe to give a balanced opinion on independence. There are far too many vested interests and axes to grind. Unfortunately very few others know enough about the subtler details to add much to the debate. For instance Jim Rogers probably is not biased, but his viewpoint is from the stratosphere. I would bet that he knows next to nothing about Scotland or it's relationship with the UK and Europe, let alone the SNP.
Also I would not be surprised in the slightest if we eventually discover that Russia has been involved in promoting Scottish independence as they certainly have had a role in Brexit. Do we want to benefit Russia?
If Scotland leaves the UK I am in no doubt that our relationship with England will sour much further. The UK will NEVER be welcomed back into the EU and similarly Scotland will NEVER be welcomed back into the Union. Whether Scotland would be welcomed by the EU is anyones guess and in no ways a certainly. Hence we should be extremely careful before leaving and not trust those who seek to manipulate us to their gain, whomever they are. Remember, we as voters in the UK have been very easily fooled in the past on many issues and I suspect that this will end up similarly.
