I was hired by Kawasaki to do PR and to put this series of films together. It was produced under the auspices of Texas A&M, which was THE vehicle safety authority at the time. There are 7 reels, only this one has been converted to video. It was intended for high schools to use to teach motorcycle riding. Honda had a so called course at the time, but it was a sales gimmick. This series had the approval of the Motorcycle safety foundation as well. In one reel, we showed how to teach people how to stop before they learn to go. It was a very expensive project and 500 copies of the series were printed and distributed. What was in the series is still basic learn to ride information. A friend of mine, Byron Bauer was the cinematographer and we both supervised the editing. It was pretty low budget because it was an honest safety film, not an advertisement vehicle. I still have a 16mm print stashed away somewhere, but I doubt if I'll ever convert it to video. It was produced on Eastman color negative film, color by Delux. The editing bay in Hollywood was a gas since there were people cutting porn in the rooms around us. A lot of work. Tom Lecoq
This is just stellar! :-) Sent link to my 15 yr old who's looking for her Scooter license this year. Really not a whole lot of changes in 37yrs, eh? (and I love the sweet KZ400 in the vid.. I've the same machine in my garage just at the beginnings of a restore!)
What a great video! After that segment from 3:08 to 3:15, what you didn't see was the guy on the triple whacking open the throttle and burning off the KE100 rider. I wish I had that Z1... Mr Munky
Ahhh sweet! Nice KZ400 in there...S3 triple...Z1...too bad no H2! Looks like most of this was shot down in Orange County by Kawasaki HQ...where's part 2?
DEFINITELY TRUE,...it will take practice to build your skills! There's no way to get everything down pat in a single weekend course! Some people learn quick,..for others it takes more time! Me,..it's going to take more time as I have never operated a motorcycle before! My biggest thing as I see it now will be braking, clutching, and shifting,..clutching and shifting being the main items I'll need LOTS of practice with.
i don't really notice a difference between safety then and now, they all seem the same. Those bikes don't look much different from my 80' ltd440 either.
doh!! its an fn test ! Very original and now uber retro like one of your dads vintage poorly stashed X rated VHS tapes.. and the voice over narrator sounds like the guy from Evil Dead on the old reel to reel Ash finds in the basement, 'the only way to kill one of the afflicted is through the act of bodily dismemberment'. Cool old vid, love the then new KZ1000 or maybe Z900.
Hey, I passed the test ..do I get a free Z1? Also it takes about 10 YEARS to be a good rider. And even then some Dumb A## is always trying to hit you anyway... Guaranteed on every ride ..everyday. Also noticed they had the KE-125 Kawasaki they were also riding..an excellent bike. The KE-125 is Probably about as fast as the KZ-400 in a race...a good mileage, reliable(slow) bike. Good thing I passed on the KZ and went with the H1

Thomas Lecoq .. any chance editing some Van Nuys porn into the series, after all motorcycles are supposed to be chick magnets...🐥

Great video, thanks for posting. I hope you find the other parts to this series and post them as well.
love that plymouth duster
Great vids.
Great - Thank you!
I guess they didn't regard the H2 as a beginner bike :o)Don't have part 2 yet. Might possibly get my hands on it later.
LOL I own at least one of each of those motorcycles in this video!
What a great video!

1:36 - pay for a tank of gas with change. Even on a bike you don't see that any more.
Awesome video :D Thanks
I notice someone's commented about this short film (and others) being on a DVD. Does anybody know if it's still out there?

yup it's a good idea
2 stroke triples do not get great gas milage, especially when you ride them hard.
