Bareback gallop goes wrong

  • Thought I would upload this on my channel too even though most of you will have seen it on Allys!
    Ahh this was the scariest moment of my life, I am so not confident riding bareback and would never have felt brave enough to gallop bareback
    I was intending to go for a little canter and callie had been galloping with Ally two minutes before so she was having none of it! I was so scared to pull her in a circle and her fall and hurt herself so I didn't know what to do!!
    It's funny looking back now but it was so scary and really makes me realise how dangerous what we do is! We all need to be more careful about our safety!

    Trust me guys, if your horse won't stop you try ANYTHING to stop them. I know pulling the reins is bad but in that split second moment that is what most people do and when that fails, you try everything else!

      Um... If you're on a horse that's bolting, and the only way to stop that horse is to pull on the reins for he safety of yourself AND your horse, pull the reins.

      +Chloe Cameron What you should actually do disengage the horse's hindquarters because they cannot run with their legs crossed. Take one of your reins and pull it towards your shoulder and use the leg that is on the inside of the circle to push the horse's hip out. They'll stop really fast.

      I think you did great. The horse obviously wasn't mean, just naughty and full of beans. You stayed on brilliantly and although you looked slightly tense in the shoulders your bum, legs, and hips all did exactly what what needed, not just to stay onboard but you were actually riding.
      When your mates shouted to pull her round that seemed to break your upper body tension and you pulled her up without yanking even though she didn't really want to stop and it took a couple of turns before she listened. And she did listen even though she would have liked to carry on.
      I imagine she is a sweet horse when she puts her mind to it.

    Great! I live in Italy and my town has a historical bareback horse race called “Palio”: I don’t like it because it’s dangerous for the horses (and of course for the riders, but they are aware of this and freely choose tu run - they are also paid so much!), but what I admire is the seat of the most of riders (not all), who are so used to do everything bareback that are one single thing with the horse. Impressive how they look around and behind during the race (to check where the other riders are) at full speed, without even losing a bit of balance.

    So I'm a little weird, my favorite way to do anything on a horse is bareback, so when I start training a horse i always start them out bareback, regardless if they are a bucker or not just because I love the closeness I feel to the horse. I have encountered this problem many times before, best way to stop a bolting horse is to grip as far down the reins on the side you have room to turn on as you can and pull down keeping the reins close to you, turn the horse as hard as you can to one side trying to get them to bend their neck around and hold it until they stop. This has worked in most my cases but of course there are some horses out there that are just too strong and stubborn, in those cases I have found a more severe bit is sometimes necessary.

  • @GMD0602

    One-Rein stop, is the way to go!
    Was on a dressage horse once and he got sassy...cantered off, fast. I lost my stirrups...am a newer rider.
    I recalled what I was taught (lol) from my beloved youtuber Rick Gore. Use one rein to stop. Worked like a charm, when nothing else worked. Yeehaw, awesome to feel some horsepower tho! You can tell the one-rain was the most effective :)

  • @theothegreygelding
    @theothegreygelding 3 года назад

    If your horse doesn't stop, and pulling back the rains doesn't help, I noticed the turned them in a small circle helps. It forces them to slow down, and keep doing that until the horse stops.

    plus wild horses ran like this on some of the rockiest terran ever... people could argue that the horse has evolved and what not but they have a sense of balance for a reason. the horse is ment to run like this to get away from prey and also at times to play (which is what callie was doing) i see no danger for the horse here because this is what they are meant to do... Gemma was the only one in "danger" here but she handled it beautifully.

    We have five horses and four people were riding so we let the fifth horse tag along so she wouldn't break down the barn. Well the first horse spooked and instantly threw and inexperienced rider. My two more experienced buddies ended up jumping off because one was being dragged thru trees and the other just decided he didn't want to deal with it. So I was galloping bareback with riderless horse in either side of me and two more a ways behind me. Then I realized we were getting close to home and they were not slowing down and there was a path with armadillo hole and then barbed wire and low hanging roofs so I knew I needed to jump off at that point and my hand got caught and is as dragged and I look up and just see a hoof pounding furiously right by head then I slipped free and was able to get up and get in the way and stop the fifth horse who was slower and far behind. I calmed him and rode home and had to get a truck and retrieve my friends. It was terrifying

  • @norakittenborn4474

    You shouldn't pull both reins when you're trying to slow a horse from a gallop. It just gives them something to pull against so their mouth gets num. If you pull the outside rein a couple of times then it should slightly annoy the horse and it will slow down a bit. Not exactly "annoy" but I don't know what word to use.

    I must admit it is a horrbile feeling when they gallop and your not comfortable. My pony Dolly did that, and i have been bolted of before going around 6 times(by another pony) and galloping her, it felt like a bolt but it wasn't. I was supposed to be having a nice canter with her and she decided to gallop, a bit like your story really. Well done for keeping on though. Bareback galloping must of been scary!

    Good job staying on. But you were about on his/her neck? Is it just cause you were pulling to hard or because you stay on better like that? Or is that just how you ride?

    Ahh, and that's why I'm so scared of riding bareback. Once I fell during the "race" with my friend (she had a saddle) and broke my finger, ugh. My horse didn't like her horse and as she came too close to us, she wanted to kick her horse. But anyway, my horsey was the only one I was confident enough to gallop on bareback. Rest in peace, my love

    I love galloping on my horse, but we dont have a very large field so i can only allow a bit of gallop before I have to turn him back, thank god Jake has excellent brakes.

    Scary! Riding is very dangerous, and you dont really realize it until something like this happens. My mare was just walking and tripped over herself and went down and I ended up with a concussion and I bit threw my lip and had to get 13 stitches. Owch!

    my horse is about like Callie... once he gets started he has no intention of slowing down. im not afraid of it happening while under saddle but bareback is much harder to hang on for he is much like a tank lol. you balanced on her beautifully and handled it very well, good job :D

  • @blueyalt
    @blueyalt 3 года назад

    People keep saying to keep a firm grip without even knowing thats like the WORSE thing to do on a horse. You always try to let go of the reins and allow the horse to get away from what it sees as danger (if youre about to fall or are already on the ground). There is NO horse that can carry a humans weight while being held on by the neck or reins let alone a saddle. Also im seeing people saying to not gallop on a horse you dont know when none of them know how long youve been working with that horse. I went to horse lessons and they would allow me to TRY and gallop with a horse i knew for a week (which im not sure is appropriate bc most horse lessons are expensive but teach u the wrong things or are just lazy). You should never go into a horses territory when you dont know them. lmao (idk if any of this is accurate but im just making an educated guess based on what i know lolol)

    I wish I could ride without a saddle that good :/ . I have only ridden without stirrups and with vaulting saddle and I had to change a saddle because I was about to fall every second! I have ridden now about 3 years. without stirrups I can trot but not gallop.

      A canter is a three beat gait while the gallop has four beats & is faster :) More info about it here if you would like more details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_gait I hope this helps :D
