In a book I read on this case, the story was told about one of these women, I can't remember which one, who was sure she had seen the ghost of a Roman citizen in Paris. Investigators found out that around that time there was a well-known eccentric who walked around in a toga etc. Maybe there was some kind of drama going on in Versailles and they didn't stop to check?
‘Time rifts’ wouldn’t really work how most people think. A real time rift would show the person experiencing it just empty vacuum in space , since the physical location of the earth in the current time would not coincide with the location of the earth in the past. The ‘rift’ would need to teleport them in both time and space for them to see earth in the past - which is highly unlikely to occur through any kind of natural phenomena.

Well I have been to Versailles, the hedges are not tall but about knee high, and then beyond that there are several wooded areas, but nothing to get lost in.
The reverse happened. They actually did the research of the 1700s including the gardens, dress of the time and people likely to be there and then had a "vision."
