My husband and I are not campers anymore, but I got a rocket stove because I live in Los Angeles. We are in earthquake territory and have automatic gas shut off valves, so the chances that I will have natural gas in my home in the event of an earthquake is about zero. After we run out of propane, I will have charcoal grill. After we run out of charcoal, I will have the rocket stove. Redundancy is the key for us. I am canning carrots in my Nesco canner as we speak. Thanks for helping us all to be more prepared, Pam and Jim!
As you were making the nachos, I kept thinking "why not layer it and heat the salsa?" We all forget things, and I know when making videos on a rocket stove, between the Temp and wood, it's NOT as easy as folks think. It's a great idea to practice now. You will be an expert, when you NEED to be! Great video!
Prof Pam , Thank you for sharing with us how to make all the extras off grid too...I appreciate you and Jim so much for your time and wisdom. I am #teamcantrell ❤️❤️
When I was a kid we lived off grid. We cooked over an open fire with tin on top. It had holes in it to let the heat through. Our cast iron would get black with soot. We used to put dish soap on the bottom of the pans before cooking. It made clean up a lot easier.
This was a good reminder for me to practice with my preparedness items. I still haven't cooked on my rocket stove! It's better to practice now than in an emergency.
We’ve been experimenting with our rocket stove - just eggs and burgers so far to get the feel of it. We love cooking with it and these recipes really give me great inspiration for our family so thank you!! Great video!
You really are amazing! You cover so many different types of things. I've tried your meals in a bag and they're delicious. I've made your spicy pork as well as your beef stroganoff - yummy! I don't have the rocket stove but was interested to see your experience. Watching you try things gives people the encouragement to try it for themselves. Your husband is a lucky man because you are one prepared woman! I wonder if you might ever consider baking bread on the grill in case we had a grid down situation and could maybe use the grill to bake a loaf? Just an idea. Thank you once again for "keeping us in the know"!
When my girls were in Girl Scouts years ago, we learned to cover the outside of our cooking pans with liquid dish soap, prior to placing over fire. Clean up was much easier !! I still do this with dutch ovens, soup pots, etc.😊
At girl's camp in the 70s we always smeared dish soap on the bottom of the pan before putting it over the fire. I haven't tried it in decades but that popped into my head when you said that.
When cooking on wood. Recommend that you can put soap(i use bar soap), on the bottom and sides of the pot/pan. Makes cleaning Much easier. Liquid soap does get sticky. Suggest an SOS PAD or a FINGER NAIL BRUSH TO CLEAN OUTSIDE. Maybe a Dawn works well too. Doesn't effect the food at all. Enjoy!
Looks awesome, love your videos and safe way of doing things,l trust what you tell us ,you are so knowledgeable, and know whats going on thanks so much for being there for us.
Great recipes. Love your work. Suggestion: for quick and easy cleaning up put a thin layer on your pan, cast iron, of dish soap on the bottom up the side to about half. Washes off easily. Hope this helps. ❤
Thank you for showing this experience. I have never cooked on a rocket stove and do not currently own one, but you have persuaded me to do so. This will be something to practice as it used little fuel and does not take up too much space.
You may have had this suggested already, but covering the outside and bottom of your skillet with dishwashing liquid soap, any kind, will help with that soot and clean up.
Will you be making a 3 Meal Off Grid cookbook? Your recipes look wonderful, but are hard to write down what to use, etc. Thanks for all your wonderful ideas!
Great experiment I enjoyed it as I always do all of your videos. One thing we have to condition our minds as when we using rocket stove or outdoor cooking might be a good thing to have like an outside kitchen with all of its own utensils So in that way we don't bring in the black stuff into your house . Much love to you Thanks again for All your very interesting & informative videos ❤ Blessings
I do like that you're showing recipes that have quite a lot of versatility to them, whatever veggies you have on hand seem to pretty much work for the orzo recipe. I did buy a wonder bag (I found it in a second hand store for $10.00, they were selling it as a dog bed!! I wasn't exactly sure it was one till I got it home and found the top cover stuck to the bottom), then I bought second hand on eBay a Stanley insulated cooker. Now, I'm hoping you might be able to share a few versatile recipes like this that we can put together for this method of cooking. I'm hoping for some nice healthy meals without heating up the house during the summer.
This series is great so far. I built the brick rocket stove after seeing your video. Only had the opportunity to practice once. It burned great, but as you say, the soot. My goodness! I love the griddle idea.
Ah, all three meals were a inspirational! Now, for the loaded nachos, when do you add the salsa in the layers? I can imagen the aroma. I was not hungry, but now I am. I'm from the tropics (Puerto Rico) and my husband is from an Italian family. He does not like avocados and I do. So, I will need to add the avocados on one side of the pot. My mother (90 years old) grew up in the mountains of Puerto Rico. She told me that their Ajax or Bartender's Friend detergent was ashes. They cooked everything by fire, and they used the ashes to scrub off things. It makes sense since lye comes from ashes. Ashes are also good for whiting your laundry believe it or not. Try the ashes to clean the pots and let me know. Also, wear gloves. Lye is pretty strong stuff on your hands.
Try coating the outside bottom of your pan with dish soap before cooking on the Rocket Stove. Works great for campfires, and the soot washes right off when it's cleanup time.😊
I will definitely have to look for orzo on my next trip to the grocery store! It looks so good! I kept thinking that I would have to add more chips and kept waiting for the salsa LOL Regardless, you pulled it off and it looked delicious! Thanks for showing all of the alternate ways to cook.
try coating the outside of the pan with a thin layer of dish soap before cooking. I learned that from my dad who was a backpacker and cooked over open flame.
Loved this segment. Gave me ll kinds of ideas. I have a solo stove that I use as a fire pit and it cooks well and may be able to cook some of these meals as well!
I loved this video! I've had a rocket stove for maybe 10 years I've done a little bit of cooking on it and enjoyed all of it. I guess I should use cast iron. I have so much trouble with cast iron and the seasoning and cleaning piece of it. And I know you have a video on it but I've had such a struggle in the past. Should probably try again
If I were cooking on a rocket stove I would use a sheet of aluminum foil between the stove and the pan. The sheet would be big enough to keep the soot from getting on the pan. I would throw away the foil when done.
@RoseRed Homestead -- That "Woman with a Gadget" I have done it with my Dutch oven on the barbecue grill and it worked well. We were burning sticks and twigs at the time.
The last meal looked amazing! I think instead of plain meat I would use my canned meat carnitas. As forgetting the chips in the middle look at it as less fattening. You both enjoy your evening.
Very impressive ! I’ll have to try this but I have no rocket stove , try it on my gas stove! Imagine having something this nice if all electricity is off, and not eating a can of Bernie weenies or such! Lol
Enjoyed the demonstrations! Have you tried rubbing bar of a soap on the outside bottom of the pan before cooking with the pan on the rocket stove? That may help with the clean up later :-)
Hi, Rose… thank you for the great video… But, why did you choose to strain the raspberries for the syrup? Why didn’t you prefer the additional nutrition that the whole fruit would provide? Your meals looked delicious, BTW!
Leaving next Monday for a camping trip so I am going to make this one evening. We have a rocket stove so all set there. So, when you make this in your microwave, do you layer it the same way? Or make individual plates with this mixture? Which sound about right to me.
Pam your a pro with the rocket stove ! I was wondering if that’s lodge cast iron brand you’re using, if so how to you clean and condition them? I’ve had a terrible time with my new lodge product like in your video, any help would be appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Pam, I have a question. You said in this video that you really like cooking on the rocket stove with your cast iron pans versus Dutch oven cooking because it's faster. Do you think it would be possible to do your bread on a rocket stove with a Dutch oven putting the coals on the top and a rocket stove underneath? Or is that too hard to regulate?
Jim and Pam, can I use a Coleman oven on top of my gas indoor cooktop when my power goes out and I can’t use my oven? Also is the rocket stove and Coleman oven the best choices to cook off grid if we run out of butane, propane etc? 😊 thanks
It would probably work. What the best option for one person isn't for another, so it would be good to try out a few options. My 1st choice is our outdoor propane camping oven and second would be my Dutch ovens over charcoal.
@@RoseRedHomestead Yes I did re-season it. Pan is still good, but I need a proper way to get food off without having to reason every few weeks. Thank you Pam/Jim!

Thank you, not only for the great instructions for cooking on a rocket stove, but for the absolutely delicious meals you made! Yum Yum!!!
Thank you. We were pleased with the way they turned out.
I spread a thin layer of dish soap on the bottom of my pans to prevent a soot buildup.
The orzo cooks quickly and conserves fuel thats a bonus.!!
Thank you for your continued instruction! 😋

When camping and using cast iron we rub liquid soap all around the bottom 😊 Great video .😊

You have named two of the reasons we decided to get one as well! We use yard clippings as fuel most of the time and I love that versatility.
I haven’t had Orzo in years. I need to add it to my long term pantry. I have thin spaghetti and parboiled rice for quick cooking also.
You may have had this suggested already, but covering the outside and bottom of your

The syrup looks so good. I can almost taste it! We have blackberry brambles and I make syrup and jelly from them. Wonderful!
It was delicious. I will be doing a video on how to can raspberry syrup a bit later in the summer.
Didn’t you hear me yelling at you? CHIPS!!! Pam, CHIPS!! Lol

Hi, Rose… thank you for the great video… But, why did you choose to strain the raspberries for the syrup? Why didn’t you prefer the additional nutrition that the whole fruit would provide? Your meals looked delicious, BTW!
The raspberries were spent--giving up all their flavor to the syrup. But you could certainly leave them in if you wish.
@@RoseRedHomestead Thank you for responding… that makes sense! 🥰
