This video is a compilation of highlights from the 2006 IBJJF Worlds.
The 11th Jiu Jitsu World Championship defined the end of an era, the last time the event was held in Brazil at the Tijuca Tênis Clube - RJ. With the IBJJF set on conquering a more financially viable market in the USA.
For many the change had a dramatic impact, especially on the Brazilian grappling community, who saw their biggest tournament move to a country where their visa’s were denied and their pockets could not reach.
The nostalgic atmosphere did not stop Alexandre Ribeiro from claiming what was his. One of the best performances by the Manaus native, “Xande” went through his opposition, defeating legends like “Cyborg” Abreu, Tarsis Humphreys and Roger Gracie, to name a few. Conquering the heavyweight and open weight titles in a talent stacked absolute division.
The event featured many historical matches such as Roger Gracie vs Xande Ribeiro, Andre Galvao vs Marcelo Garcia, Rubens Cobrinha Charles vs Marcio Feitosa & many more! This video also features rare footage of Kron Gracie being coached by his father Rickson Gracie.
The World Jiu-Jitsu Championship (commonly known as Mundials) is the most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament in the world. Hosted annually by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the first World Championship was held in 1996 at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tournament has grown to over 1,650 competitors. The first Mundial tournament to be held outside of Brazil was in 2007 at California State University, Long Beach in Long Beach, California, United States.
