- Nikolai Voinov (1900-1958) demonstrates the techniques of Paper Sound and the creation of music for animation.
The demonstration includes two short animations:
"Rachmaninov Prelude", 1932 (1:07)
"The Dance of the Crow", 1933 (2:11) Видеоклипы
Very much like the synthesizer music that would be heard 30+ years later!
mmm no, el
trautonium es de los 30 tambien
Ancient Nintendo labo keyboard.
"It's a-me! Joseph Stalin-a!"
Thanks you very much. I have been reading about this but it's hard to find actual examples.
Although also pursued in other countries garaphical sound had a very strong evolution in the USSR. In the 1940's it led to the A.N.S. synthesizer which could do things that only modern computers can nowadays do. One could program it by inscribing every aspect of a piece on a blackened glass plate. During replay light sensitive cells detected where the glass had become translucent again and this information was turned into sound. In fact it was the worlds first fully pholyponic additive synthesizer. It has been restored and even functions today. Check it out!
That sounds like amplitude modulation. Smart.
@@LordGryllwotth No, the thing "simply" has 4 optical disks that contain enough frequencies to divide 8 octaves into fine enough steps to make any jumps undetectable for the ear. A bit like the audio equivalent of the 24 fps film effect. Since it is fully polyphonic one can then do full additieve synthesis.
There's a UK artist from the 40s that used visual 'sound lozenges' on a very complicated animation rig. Channel 4 (UK) showed a programme about him during the early 90s. The name escapes me sadly..
@@TattiePeeler Was the artist female? If so she was probably Daphne Oram who worked with a graphically controlled system in the 1960's. Another posibility is Norman Mc Laren, but he was Canadian if I am right. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/Q0vgZv_JWfM/видео.html
@@marcbrasse747, thanks for replying, no, Oram is a a decade or three later. The artist was male and it would have been between the 1920's-1930's at the latest. UK. The 'machine' he used was huge, the lozenges would visualise a classical piece but would also activate audio using a light sensitive part of his set up. Everything done by hand. Frame by frame. I'll look about and report back. There's a few sites listing 'art programmes' broadcast on Channel 4 and I'm Googling..
paper synth, cool :)
This hits hard ngl
1:08 This is my head when I hear any music.
Rachmaninov prelude C sharp minor
Just terrifying as expected.
😂
Why??
Wow. Got here from bbc orkestra obsolete blue Monday. Perfect.
This is amazing! I'd heard drawn-on sound before but never fully-realized musical compositions.
This is actually really cool. It reminds me a lot of the C64 and its pulse width modulation. I wish modern composers would still use this technique to make music!
this is fantastic, sounds like a mini Moog, wow.
sounds like NES music
ok, this is pretty techno for 1930!
I love the dancing crow!
Thank you for uploading this.
is it just me or does 1:08 remind me of a certain mod for a certain strategy game released in 2016?
Tell me you live in The Island Of The Asian Soviet Socialist Union, without telling me you live in The Island Of The Asian Soviet Socialist Union
Sensational
Thanks for uploading
О, спасибо за кадры)
it's so perfect...
love it!!
Thanks youtube algorithm?
Nikolai Voinov is the Russian max fleischer!

No matter how absolutely amazing this is, that crow will always look like it's begging for death.

Woah :0
Whoa thiswhy is this so Castelvania af!?
I know there's no color but does this remind anyone else of synesthesia?
yes, because of the moving shapes! a visual representation of the notes - it works perfectly
@@hello-jy9hf yep this! it does!
@@borg-borg-2015 I love it when people talk about synesthesia, it makes my day. thank you for reminding me of this video with your comment my dude
I have synisthesia it's pretty amazing. it's funny people take drugs to music. it may read naff but music is like a drug to me. I love Bach baroque music and synth Italian synth up to 1984 had to be analogue as the brian is analogue.
I can see colour, or black and white. Visuals textures in relation to tone sound. I end up in an meditive state of mind hooked on what I see thru music. I mean I dont activly have to think of what I see visually. I also get dynamisim movement. I struggled thru school because I'd hear a bit of music but have it repeat in my head and visuals. I loved art class I can barely do maths reading ok dyslexic not badly. I am a stain glass artist and use music as the basis of all my works. one example on my avitar on left ☺ my earliest memories of this was when I was a toddler I could see images to music mym woyld play sitting in the back of the car. I lived evening runs in the car watching light move as we would pass streetlights. Music no stop by Kraftwerk 1986 always triggers that memorie for me. i can remember toddler moments clear as a bell yet struggle with a shopping list😀 I also enjoy editing videos to music.
I took me years to understand how my brain is wired. I suffer depression and anxiety but I use that to add more to my work. I do t see it as a bad thing just a little more sensitive etc.
I actively hunt for library synth itali music for effects. it's like a never ending hunt for that visual fix but also I build up a musical memory back that I can recall or combine others for a visual.
at some point I would love to make my own music synth but analogue too expensive. I was let down by the education system. i will teach myself animation as I like to forge my own path creatively. I also would love to make films.
i have synesthesia and thats EXACTLY what i was thinking throughout the whole vid!!!
1:12 - 2:00 on this wouldnt sound out of place within clockwork orange, other than the fidelity that is

Довоенные синтезаторы звуков. Оптико-электрические.
:,)
Да, подобия синтезаторов появились уже тогда, при "кровавом" Сталине)
This made me think that *exist people that connect Socialism /USSR with Technological stagnation* .
too ahead
He must have been studying instrument waveforms on the oscilloscope to recreate them.
Goth before goth
Well, there’s three minutes of my life I wont be getting back.
If it's any consolation, you probably weren't gonna use those three minutes anyway
And you will wake and remember none of this on the count of 3. 3, 2, snap.
Neat ! Makes me think of electro mechanical T V disks for some reason. I'm going to check for 1930's Russian T.V. now ruclips.net/video/WiwYsYNh3ao/видео.html
Lol you all scared of cartoon crow 🤣
Main stream education is a total waste of time! They never taught us any of this stuff but only that we descend from monkeys and used to kill one another... We have been lied to - big time!
Totally false! Everyone knows we descended from apes!
@@AreGeeBee hear, hear!
