    I used to be an outfielder and threw long armed. I am 60 still playing. I switched to short arm for pitching because when long armed, I would be all over the place. With short arm, I rotate the hips and chest faster and find the plate with my eyes faster and have much better control. Another thing is a faster release to cut down on stolen bases.

    Great explanation Brent! Some might think short arm is for smaller guys. Yes, most smaller pitchers use speed and rotation rather than building energy slowly and being linear but I think is more than just convenience, also anatomical factors. For example Japanese pitching style is more of an inside 90 short arm style. And it has noting to do with size, I've seen some huge Japane pitchers throwing super fast with short arms. I believe is more like their baseball school style. There's also anatomical differences in the shoulder ligaments. In my case I was born without middle glenohumeral ligament (2% of population is born without it) but my upper glenohumeral ligament is excessively huge (counting for two) which makes me believe why some pitchers prefer some styles vs the others. Not just because of how they where taught but also in which they feel more comfortably. In my case short arm works best.
    Bonus that ball exploding @3:51 made me jump. lol

    Hi, my 9 yr old has started pitching this year. He has a flexed nearly 90 degree arm position. While starting his wind up, he holds the glove high (nearly shoulder high) & when he pulls his arm back there isn't any downward motion but it is straight back & with that 90 degree flex. He is very accurate but I wanted to make sure this isn't a problem. He isn't aiming the ball or throwing like he would a shotput. We have been told he needs to swing his arm down & back but that would be difficult since he holds the glove so high. The straight back movement comes from where he holds the glove. Thanks for your input!

    Can you provide a list of pitchers who have gained velocity due to transitioning to a short arm from a long arm? Tyler Glasnow used to have a short arm, now has a long arm, and of course, now throws 100. Can you give a list of pitchers who are better off with a long arm action and ones who are better off with a short one? What about negative impacts of a short arm? Are there more Tommy Johns with short arms?

    • @Rooster_king
      @Rooster_king 2 года назад

      Glasnow blew up his elbow and is going thru TJ recovery. Not sure if his changes caused this though. He blames it on the league enforcing illegal substances for pitchers.

    brent i think the arm should get long if the body moves forward while the ball stays almost like it’s on a tee before front foot strike. a lot of youth players reach back with the ball without moving. short arm works for catchers and middle infielders turning the double because they aren’t driving as much off the back leg. thx for clearing that up been trying to work that out the past couple of months

      gerard lancaster yes and when not driving off the leg all you can do is rotate your trunk.

    What would be the proper arm path for catcher ? Inside 90 or less ?

    • @brentpourciau
      @brentpourciau  4 года назад +1

      More inside 90 because they are going to rotate trunk more than push trunk forward to speed time to release.

      Just like I talked about here get on the TopV Training App www.topvelocity.net/start and start developing a more linear trunk path and your arm path will be forced to change.

      Pitcher Baseball healthiest is something in the middle which means the body has a good compliment of linear to rotational energy.

    In this video you illustrated 45 degree arm for the short arm and in another video you stated to stay away from that due to bicep stress and causing the elbow to get out front just confused about teaching that compact short arm vs 90-75 degrees

    Background music is a good idea but it was a little too loud throughout the video. Needed to drop the music audio level by about another 25-30%. I just tell kids to scap load and "Make a muscle" when arm cocking. Works for most kids but of course I use video to show kids what they are doing when arm cocking because they have learned all kinds of bad habits when they were younger.
