Your podcasts are outstanding, not simply, because of your encyclopedic knowledge of Chinese history and culture, but also because of the highly entertaining style of your delivery. Thanks so much. With respect to Empress Wu, even if the tales of her savagery are true, she would’ve been regarded as one of the greatest emperors if she were a man. The subsequent Confucian histories blame the problems of the era on her gender rather than her conduct.
She was amazing!!!!!!! It's hard to be a woman today but impossible 1400 years ago! Her achievements/contributions over 40 years were out of this world - let alone 1400 years ago!
Wow this is really interesting! Im glad I came across this. Do you have any book recomendations for starting out? Also should I just watch the podcasts in upload order or is there a better order for someone who is looking to learn the history chronologically?
Thanks Josh. I always recommend John Keay's "China: A History". Very easy to read and a good general history. If you're looking to listen to a chronological approach, try out the excellent History of China Podcast by Chris Stewart. He starts at the beginning and is now in the 14th century. I have about 20 different playlists you can check out that divide up the history in different big topics. I also have a 25 or 30 part series that gives a VERY general overview of Chinese Imperial History: ruclips.net/video/7v6WuV1nknw/видео.html. Thanks Josh!
When they open these tombs do they ever find new literature? The thing I find really sad about Rome is that we'll most likely never find new literature :/

Thanks again Michael. Yeah, the Confucians were not fans of Wu Zetian.

I love the causal way that you presented Empress Wu Zetian biography.
Yeah, leave the serious presentations to the serious academics!! Quite a ruler she was!

What serial drama based upon her life? Does it contain English subtitles?
Hi Beverly, I can't find one with English subtitles. The good ones only have Chinese subtitles.

I try to be Wu's friend but she always betrays me and I'm forced to destroy her.
I'm talking civ v
She is cool
She was definitely a one of a kind.
Her period started right after the start of the Tang Dynasty.... .. and was quite moody
