These games are a pleasure to watch on that monitor! Daytona on Saturn plays so well, I don't even notice the graphics anymore. At launch, though... yikes.
Yh I remember as a kid on the way home from school dropping into HMV as they always had a console demo station set up and then it was playing daytona and being so disappointed by the graphics!
Granted GT shifted the goal posts in graphics for a console game and also portraying 'realish' physics. I enjoyed GT1 & 2 back then but I eventually moved on as the AI was dire, and the endurance races were a bore. As far as PS1 racing games go today I still occasionally go back and play Toca 2, Motorhead, Rapid Racer, Road Rash, some of the NFS games and Wipeout 3 SE
No contest, Daytona every time, every version. I still fire up the saturn version these days. RR may have looked better on PS1 and been more successful on consoles, but it was always just a time trial game with mobile chicanes. Daytona on the other hand had 40 cars racing round with far superior AI that was an actual challenge. I also have Ridge Racer Type 4 sitting on the shelf, but other than looking pretty, it just sits there gathering dust.
But you gotta agree that when comparing respective arcade version with their console equivalent Namco did a far better job porting Ridge Racer to the PSX than Sega. Not only does it suffer heavily from the low frame count but the draw distance is really short. I know some of this was fixed for the updated champion version but still.
@@tranceenergy3121 100% agree! The home port of ridge Racer was pretty amazing, very little really between the arcade and home port. Sorry I've not watched the video yet! Lol will watch when back home. I watch anything to do with 32.bit era racing games.
@@ozstriker4075 In arcades there’s not a match. Daytona is not only superior but probably one of the greatest arcade games ever. And it holds up even until today. I still play the port to PS3 from time to time.
Team Ridge Racer !!! Their Sound Track is mind blowing!!

Always hard to play driving games with a fightstick,, imagine playing virtue fighter with a steering wheel..😂😂
True, though at the time these games were released neither console had an analogue controller option so pad or stick were basically the same.
@@rosstee dpad much easier I think..
@@T200026 Yeah, simpler to make the small adjustments you often need in racing games.
Ridge racer was pretty mind-blowing at the time but then Gran Turismo came and became the legend
I have more fond memories of Ridge Racer than GT.
