If you open your ash door first you won't get that flash over. Also if you had or have a on/off switch for the blower fan turn it off before opening the main firebox door that also stops the possible flash over as you open the main firebox door. Nice clean install, good video. Keep us updated......
I have the same model, love it so far. I've been using outdoor woodstoves for almost 20 years and this is by far the best design I've seen and uses so much less wood than any other brand/model I ever used or know of. Thanks Portage and Main for an awesome woodstove.
Thanks for the update. Glad it is working well for you. The outside domestic HW tap is nice to have. The blow out when opening the door is by design. In the top of that firebox is a “bubble” of oxygen starved woodgas. When you open the door and introduce oxygen it flares up and burns.
I have had my portage & main 2840 for 6 years this December. Your stove looks to be a newer model, does it have the stainless steel plate covering the gap where the top and bottom flanges bolt together? After 5 years creosote ate the water jacket at this area and caused it to leak on mine. Was wondering if they corrected this problem. The company did honor the warranty. The company shipped a new water jacket along with ss plate to cover the flanged area. Would appreciate knowing if this was addressed on the newer models.
Do you think your boiler would be practical for heating domestic hot water in the summer? Or is there just not enough water capacity? I need to replace an outdoor water stove that had 300-400 gallons of water capacity, and with that stove I was able to build a fire every 2-4 days and the water would stay hot enough for those 2-4 days before I'd need to build another fire.
Approximately how many cords do you estimate your boiler goes through in a year's time? This design seems superior to the Central Boiler designs of their non-gassifiers and I am curious. Thank you for taking the time to post your videos. Very informative!

I'm looking at getting the same one. How's your experience with it still going great?

I usually use between 5-7 cords of wood per season.
Thanks for the video, more sound would sure help
When you clean out the top door where do you push the ash?
There is a hole to the firebox on the left side. The ash just drops back on the fire.
How much does that boiler cost do u need a storage tank with it
No storage tank required, it’s built in the boiler
👍
What type of wood are you burning
Mostly red oak, hickory, locust, hackberry, but property seasoned just about anything else that comes my way.
Too much idling time..
How do you mean?
That’s enough wood to heat your house when it’s 0 degrees out. You’re gonna destroy that boiler
