David, thank you for posting this video. It is good to something a bit more balanced level of detail on this issue of Tamiya aerosol paints. The VOC in questions is 2-Butoxy Ethanol CAS no. 111-76-2 often referred to as 2-BE. CAS numbers are unique to specific chemicals regardless of how many common names any given chemical may have. For example 2-BE is also known as Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and Butyl glycol. It is the amount of 2-BE in the Tamiya aerosols which is the problem. The limits of toxic chemicals in products varies in part depending on the intended use of those products. Non Commercial ( i.e. home hobby and craft) use of paint and coating products containing 2-BE much lower than the permissible levels in other commercial or laboratory use. 2-BE is an alcohol and is used in paints and coatings as a surfactant; it reduces surface tension and lets the products flow better and provide a more even coat. Borgfeldt as the importer of Tamiya products into Canada has done us a good service by being forth coming on this issue. Canada and numerous other countries including the US are all signatories on international agreements with respect to monitoring and limiting the environmental impacts of VOCs. It is up the individual state as to implementation and policing of those limits within their own country. There are other hobby products that may also become affected by these 2-BE limits. Tamiya Lacquer thinner product 87077 and Mr Color thinner both contain 2-BE up to 10% Tamiya lacquer thinner retarder type and Mr Color levelling thinner do not contain 2-BE Tamiya acrylics and their X-20A thinner do not contain 2-BE Mr Color Aqueous products - bottled paints and aerosols all contain 2-BE up to 10% Mr Color Aqueous thinner does not contain 2-BE Mr Color paints - bottled and aerosols do not contain 2-BE Mission Model Paints MMA thinner contain 2-BE up to 15% Mission Model Paints MMS thinner contain 2-BE up to 5% Mission Model Paints themselves do not contain 2-BE *** Important note: These details are not inclusive of all hobby products nor are meant to single out specific manufacturers and are based on the Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDS or SDS for short ) that I have been able to find which may or may not be the most current versions of these documents. It is unfortunate that such documents for these products are not always as easily accessible as he should be.
Thank you for the detailed explanation! It’s helpful to have clarity on the specific VOC in question, 2-Butoxy Ethanol (2-BE); especially when it comes to the permissible levels that differ between home hobby use and industrial settings. The breakdown you’ve provided about Tamiya and Mr. Color products is invaluable, and I’m glad you mentioned alternatives! Thanks so much. When the "ban" first happened, we also became concerned about Mr. Hobby. We've had inventory issues for months now, but we believe that is more from Mr. Hobby directly. Thanks for sharing this information!
