I love this! As a viewer I really had no idea how much work and psychology was involved in creating videos. I live on the other side of the country from my extended family and would love to be able to create videos to keep them updated on the progress of our homestead. This type of knowledge would be so valuable.
Yeah, I was thinking I'd like to do that for friends and family as well. It's not that we're that far away, but 1.5-2 hrs is far enough they won't really know what's going on, even if they visit it once in a while it would be mostly time spent catching up and socializing.
Ohhh yeah,do more of this. I'm going to have to watch this a few more times to get a better " feel" for what you're doing. Most of the things are very subtle but very important. At some point do a entire episode on the use of drones. Including how to use the less expensive " starters" drones. Well done video, have a great day 🌤.
@@TheGrassfedHomestead I thought I have seen some drone footage in your videos? I know Justin does some. Maybe he can pass on some thoughts about drones to you since you're doing editing for him. Then you can pass that information to us. Anyway, have a great day 🌤 ☺.
Loved this! It was helpful to understand just a smidge of what goes into the editing process, and since I watch his channel it’s easier to pick up on these things now!
Dan this was fantastic. I enjoyed every second. When this "Introduction to Story Telling" series has concluded offer a step-by-step teaching course for $250 to pay for Lil Buddies college.
Perhaps this is the niche that you’re meant to fill! There’s others that post how to’s, but so many are familiar with JR’s videos that we can see the quality editing that you obviously know how to do. Keep it up and let’s see where it goes!
Thank you for the correct terms for the few things I'm already doing for my channel vids. I have so much more to learn. I like learning these things in practice, not just in theory. And not much extra time to learn them. 😄 I would like to see more editing videos if they are enjoyable for you to make. You explain things well and concisely.. Thank you!!
I do have a question. I saw in another comment reply that you use Dropbox to share files for editing between yourself and Justin. Does he upload the files raw? Aren’t these files outrageously huge? Asking because where we live, our only internet option is with limited data. I want to hire a freelance video editor or bring up someone in my team to edit my videos, but uploading even just a few video files raw would kill my entire month’s data. Wondering if there is a solution I don’t know about. Thanks in advance. And if you create a course on this stuff, I’ll buy. If you want to chat with someone who has created a bunch of online courses, happy to share what I know with you. Good luck!
@@ShanaRitter Justin shoots in 1080p so the files sizes are much smaller than 4k. Yes, he uploads his raw footage which can vary between 5-10GB per episode. I had very slow and limited internet for a long time so I would drive to town every day and use coffee shop internet (much faster) to download and upload the large files. I have a slightly better internet connection at home now so I only have to go to town to do the bigger projects now. As for courses, what type of courses do you create?
I actually mentioned to my wife the other night about how the hour long videos with Joel are great because it is a switch between whiteboard/talking head and in-the-field practical shots. She had no idea that we'd been watching videos for over 2 hours. From one editor to another, great work!
I scroll through "The Rhodes Show" comments here and there, and I see a lot of familiar channel names in these comments. Supportive is an understatement at best. Great info in this vid. If I could add my Watcher two cents (non-sense) ... you forgot the transition when Justin says... "and Dan will add a clip here if he has one. Dan, He's the editor." LOL! Again, great info, great vid, and I hope you do more of these. Cheers
Hi Dan, I agree with PANTTERA1959: create a video editing course and charge for it! Your videos like this one, which are interesting and informative could become part of the course. Years ago, I was hired to write 2 real-life to screen plays . One was set in the Spanish Civil War, the second was set in WW11. One thing I learned writing for screen is how directors do not want to see camera direction in a script. This always frustrated me because I sometimes had specific ideas for camera angles etc. But I never learned much about that... so it's really fun and interesting to hear the countless decisions a film/video editor will make and the creative solutions to keep the audience interested. I'd like to hear you talk more about the music... which probably poses many challenges with copyright etc. and where can you find music? What are some of the guidelines for using music? Thanks for great content, Dan.
thanks for taking the time to explain a bit of editing. I hope that you'll do more. It'll be fun to watch for these techniques to see how you put it all together.
LOL! 2 minutes in and I can say I've already seen that particular video about changing the background. Good refresher, Dan! Thank you! I hope to see you at the YT meeting this Saturday. :D
Very interesting, I often wondered how and why the scene changed. It definitely make the video much more pleasant to watch. I really like to know when the video is over by some indication, like let me know you liked the this or thanks for watching or see you tomorrow. Justin’s are abrupt. Leaves me hanging. Maybe it is intentional. Anyway keep up the good work!
Great tips on editing. We have definitely learned a lot and thought Justin was doing all of his editing lol Please do more videos content like this to help content creators.

I would love to join in on the creator community because I know I have helpful experience that others could glean from also, but I would want someone like you to do the video editing for me. Glad I backtracked to view this one as this was excellent and I loved your teaching style with solid examples. Hope you are feeling better.
Thanks so much for that feedback, Barb! Regarding copyrights, it's not an issue as long as you keep it really short and it doesn't become the focus of your video.

One other thing how long does it take you to make the vlogs ? And also how much raw footage does he give you? And the. How much does it cut down too? Thanks again
it varies day to day but on average, I get about 45-60 minutes of raw footage and in about 3-4 hours, I turn that into anywhere from 8-20 minutes final vlog, depending on the video.

Could you please go over best cameras or GoPros you use or recommend for farm vlogs? I currently only have my iPhone 12 but would like to upgrade to a better set up in the near future. Definitely got me as a new subscriber! Great video!
Also would like to see a video of you editing a video if that’s something you don’t mind doing as well!
I'm glad this was helpful!
Great information.
So COOL Dan 🙌.
I never new much about it , but thanks too you I know a bunch more.
Now I can say Great Job Dan 😊.
You and Little Buddy stay well 💞.
JO JO IN VT 💕😄☃
Thank you, Jo Jo!
Love the explanation
Was looking for the reason the endings of Justin’s videos are now so abrupt?
perhaps I can address that in an upcoming video
Great advice!
I enjoyed this video quite a bit.
Very interesting.
I did like it...I'm in no way a videographer or editor but it was enjoyable. I'd watch more content like this.
Very informative
Sweet! Super Cool! How much do you charge to edit a vlog? How does he send his video to Idaho from North Carolina?
sends via dropbox - I charge hourly so it depends on how long it takes to edit
I’ve always wondered, why do his videos end so abruptly? Is that a Justin desire? It feels like an outro would have a better impact
it just depends on what's going on in his day. Sometimes he doesn't know he isn't going to film more and sometimes he has a clear ending. Outros can actually be harmful since people start clicking off once the outro starts
This is great! Thank you!!! I’m gonna try these on my next video. What editing software do you use? I’m using inshot right now.
I will address this in an upcoming video.
That was really good yes very interesting 😊
Thank you 😁
So very helpful! Been going over a year with only 35 subscribers 😩 gonna implement some this!
If you make the adjustments and notice an increase in subscribers/views, let me know!
@@TheGrassfedHomestead Ok thanks, we will!
@@TheGrassfedHomestead So, we haven’t noticed any upticks. Our videos are buried under the millions lol. Would creating ads with RUclips help??
@@thehappychappyhomestead8440 Thumbnail and Titles are what get people to click. Good story/video/editing is what keeps them. Focus on thumbnail image and title and see if that helps
Also, you're very good at teaching!
thank you!
Now I feel bad when I like what I am seeing but need to move to other chores so I forward the email to my inbox which must cut down the important viewing time needed to help with the time limit. But when I do view it in my inbox,I watch the whole thing :-)
I enjoyed it!
This was helpful but since I'm a RUclips content provider, it was also intimidating. I don't know the first thing about editing! Is there a simple editing program for "Dummies"? I want to get my message out there but I don't want it to take weeks before it is up and running.
iMovie - the free software on Macs - is pretty intuitive to use
@@TheGrassfedHomestead Thanks for the reply. I did use this app on my phone but my computer is a PC and that’s where I upload my RUclips videos.
What editing software do you use? I used popular software but found it hard to see the instructions. So, it needs to be kind to older eyes.
I will address software in an upcoming video
This was cool
An this is so complex haha great job
Hey Dan - what camera setup do you use for your videos?
for my professional work, I use a Sony a7siii
@@TheGrassfedHomestead I’m a Sony user myself. I’ve had their a900 for years but I was looking to get something that shot video. I was debating between the 7siii, 7c or switching brands. Your content looks great!
@@BlueRidgeBoone get the 7siii! You won't regret it (if you can find one - they are sold out everywhere)
One thing that bugs me as a viewer is inconsistent sound levels, especially with music. Sometimes background noise or talking isn't loud enough so you have to turn the volume up a bit to hear what's being said. Then there's a transition to music and it's super loud. ARRRRR super annoying
on Justin's videos?
@@TheGrassfedHomestead not very often on Justin's videos. You're doing a good job balancing things out.
Yes! More videos like this! Can you edit my videos, please, lol?
I wish I could!
