I'm planning a 2022 AT thru hike and this is the most informative gear video that I have watched thus far. Thank you for the great and insightful information. I just saved a ton of cash on socks by visiting my sock drawer on my dresser.
Nad was on point. All great choices. Have used it all at some point. Bread bags serve many purposes. Don’t forget the cut off gallon jug as a bowl and wash basin.
I just became a Patreon supporter of Dan's and a few other hiking RUclips channels. I Feel like i've learned so much from these guys so i'm giving back. Loved the CDT video series, pretty gutsy effort!
Thank you, great content! You can prolong the durability of Frogg Toggs a lot - if you add some Leukosilk medical tape to your pack. With small pieces of this white and soft tape you can repair rips and holes on your FroggToggs from inside the jacket over and over. Will not get loose and is waterproof, lightweight and invisible from outside.
Can't get them for twenty bucks anymore, but the down blankets costco used to carry are awesome! Looks like similar blankets can still be found for around 40. I put a zipper on the bottom of one to make a "footbox" and now I have a warm, compressible one pound backpacking quilt. Have slept comfy with it down into the thirties.
Great gear review. Giving Jupiter a bit of competion in the funny yet informative videos! Maybe add in that zip locks and trash compactor bags are just as good as more expensive stuff sacks and bag liners. You don't need expensive stuff to get out on epic adventures! Thanks again for the laugh!
how's it going with the vid from the most recent trip? don't want to put any pressure, just looking forward to it. must be a looooooot of footage to go through.
No worries! It’s going great. I have a draft now, it’s a full 50 mins so very different than the previous stuff and a lot more time consuming. Just trying to improve and make it as good as I can. I’ll probably still spend a decent amount of time on it from here but I have plans to make a trailer for it soon.
My favourite thin fleece was a Quechua I found on Mt Vesuvius when I camped at the top overnight. I eventually melted big holes in it with sparks off a grinding disc :( but I recycled the arms as thigh warmers which work brilliantly under trousers on cold days or for sleeping in. Win win!
I also use frogg togg, body wrappers, and nylon dress socks. I do have a melanzana fleece which I feel is the same as any other fleece but I like the hood and kangaroo pocket, also it was a gift. But it would be lighter to go with a hoodless fleece and just use a beanie with it. Thanks for another great video Dan 👍
Andy Veres lol this is your first comment in quite a while that isn’t yeah boyyyyyyy 🙂 I do like the fancier fleeces too, just usually not for hiking. I have a hooded R1 which is awesome for winter running.
I tried the dance/windpants because of you... very happy with these! Going to have to try some more of your suggestions... maybe the 100 weight fleece. Tried the Gold Toe Socks in the past and I got blisters, going to give them another go because I wore crappy shoes. Thanks for the budget tips!
But if you use 'em like he was saying, in your wet shoes, just to keep your dry socks dry for a quick pee run or whatever, there shouldn't be too much trouble with sticks I think. Wear them too long & your sweat will make your dry socks wet, of course, so don't do that. :)
Thanks to your video's...i've bought the same type of jacket, seems to working well in this spring time weather , i bought compression type shirts which works well with the jacket and i also bought same type of dress socks , the dress socks is working out very well, they fit tight, less sweat , i only found black socks , too bad they don't come in navy blue though and For shoes... The shoes is awesome and i also bought sandals , i was told they also work out they'll work well with the dress socks .. keep them coming man, you're helping us people that are just starting to get into hiking . thank you
Maybe you had a different model, like their emergency jacket. This one will remain waterproof for at least a few weeks of light use if properly taken care of. Once it wears thin on the shoulders and back from wearing a pack it will soak a little.
I wasn't paying attention during the bread bag part but along time ago we'd put on a cotton sock then a thin produce plastic bag(loosely) and roll on a wool sock over it for snow hikes. People diss cotton socks but whatever but I always got a few produce bags in the pack.
Not AS cheap, and no free bread, but not expensive either. I use Reynolds oven bags to keep my socks dry in rain and warm in the winter. They shrink to your feet as they warm up too. Which I get strange enjoyment from....🤔
Super good, so smart, great ass video. And I do use the Frogg Toggs jacket. Regarding the M-65 pants (which I don't use) -- I DO use the M-65 field jacket liner (also very inexpensive, ~$15 max) under the Frogg Togggs Jacket. And yes on the thin el-cheapo Sox, those as well.
1st time i'm watching one of your vids...wasn't really paying attention, and then a 'dafuq, is this guy serious?!?...oh, snap! this is the best vid i've ever seen!'. hahaha
Hey Dan great vids! Just subscribed. I Have a question on the m65 insulated pants,if I wore these along with a lite weight puffy in a 20° quilt do you think it would keep me warm down to a 10° night, just trying to get around the expense buying a warmer bag for winter back packing
David Cleveland thanks! It depends on the quilt and whether you’re a warm or cold sleeper. I’ve taken my 20* enlightened equipment quilt down to 14* (wearing a fleece, puffy, tights, and rain pants) and I wasn’t exactly warm but I was able to sleep. If you’re an average sleeper, wearing a puffy jacket and pants (and adequate head insulation) would probably get you down into the teens with a 20* quilt. Personally, if I were going to be camping regularly in temps as low as 10*, I’d probably just save up for a 10* mummy. But you might as well try the set up you’re thinking of in a low risk situation and see if it works.
@@DanStenziano thanks so much for the reply! I'll try that layering system first in my back yard this winter but I definitely see your wisdom in just getting a 10° mummy bag, atb!
love that fanny pack! it is a cheap and awesome piece of gear. decathlon stuff is everywhere here in europe, and i also recommend their 100 wt quarter zip fleeces. right around 7oz, but it is a grid fleece. they even have a 5oz pull over fleece that is solid instead of grid. decathlon is love, decathlon is life. you've really put some miles on that mld pack. any plans for a pack upgrade?
OMG I can't believe I missed those! Thank you thank you. Those are perfect- going right in the description. I've mulled over a few options for a new pack, in particular a custom Atom pack or a KS50 (there's even a KS60 now that I'm considering bc I like a slightly larger pack), but I do like the MLD and plan to use it again this summer.
@@DanStenziano nice! i've got an atom+ 40L (23oz with frame and hipbelt, completely gridstop pack.) the hipbelt is removable (very cool,) but the shoulder straps are not super comfy without the hipbelt. i think his implementation of the bottom and shoulder strap pockets are better than laurent's at KS though- however his fabric choice for those (dyneeme mesh) is a bit heavy and would help you have off oz's if you were to skip them. i saw a review on r/ul from a guy who put 5000mi on his ks40 vx07 and it's got me absolutely jelly. will probably put in an order for a ks50 of the same features. seems like he beefed up the sizing on the side pockets recently, which i saw was a bit of an annoyance in one of your older vids.
@@jeremyfloyd742 here's what i use www.decathlon.ca/en/men-s/138705-3981-forclaz-20-men-s-mountain-hiking-fleece-black.html. can't find it on the US site for some reason. paired with the fleece beanie and buff from decathlon as well, you've got a killer set up for like 7oz!!
Good to know you can get that kind of mileage out of a vx07 pack! I do think if I ordered a new KS I could get very close to my perfect pack. One thing I wish you could get is S-shaped shoulder straps. Wonder if he would do it custom.
Hey man, great video, and dig your channel in general! I wanted to thank you for the fanny pack recommendation. I got one and really like it. Also so I don't spam up your comments, it's cool you're vegan. I am too and have done a few videos on vegan trail food if you are interested. Happy trails!
Nad is always making lighterpacks and occasionally on trail so it's hard to catch him but... when the time is right I think he'd be willing to make a return!
Dan Stenziano I’m trying it out on the Colorado Trail later this summer. Twice the price of the one you got on, but still much cheaper than the others.
OMG! You crack me UP! Love it! Dude I'm getting PUMPED for my Colorado Trail hike next summer! 3 years in the making. And those camp shoes look just like my snow boot liners my momma gave us as kids! LMAO! #keeponkeepinon
Haha thanks! Enjoy the CT, that'll be a blast! I have also used plastic bags (produce bags) inside winter boots- a vapor barrier between my liner socks and my thick socks

Idk, I haven't used darn toughs. Before these I used injinji liners and the dress socks are almost as good (for me) but cost a lot less and last longer. I don't think they're the absolute best performance wise but they're good enough and economical.
Nad, Dan, who cares, you’ll always be Saharo with that v dry humour. Gold toe socks? I’m still getting nostalgic about the ultra white dress socks😊 How did you ever get them so white?
Why on earth would I spend $8 on an easy to purchase fleece when I can fly across the planet and spend $200 on a Melanzana(then list it for sale on eBay for a slightly reduced price) ; )
I just want to know if you were paid by the bread bag company to promote their company. I'm so sick of you Influencers who coming up supposed new reasons to to buy more bread bags. Next you'll probably suggest we can use bread bags as mittens in case of a rain storm or some recycling trash talk like that
I like your channel Dan, but please don’t have that guy Nads on again. He’s kind of a dick. And he was talking down on Mozzerelza. How else am I supposed to make $180 on eBay from a 2017 purchase?! Can’t sell my Darn Toughs! Just you next time
