  • The Douglas AD-2 Skyraider. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't quiet and it guzzled oil like Oliver Reed locked in a brewery overnight, but it was tough, powerful, ridiculously well armed and it got its pilots home safe.

      *****, let me tell you: Do NOT fly this plane if you want to keep your money. This palne costs over 20 k to repair every battle!!! It costs as much as the end-of-the-line Jets for the Americans! That is insanly expensive!
      Stick with ya Hurricanes
      Also i must add that very often it is the case that I am not half way to the ground units and I get jumped by enemy Jets and all I can do is avoiding their attacks until I am out of energy and the rest of my team mostly consists of B 29s - I have a win ratio of 32 % in 128 battles where I died 109 times.
      The plane is good, but the BR is absurd. This plane can not break 400 km/h in level flight, where as the Arado with cannons can fly over 800 km/h. And both have same BR!!! ^^
      Greetings

    The modern version of this is the A-10 thunderbolt II(warthog). It looks like it's dressed for a drunken fight not a party as some fighter jets are, slow as hell compared to other jets. But boy does it do the job and get you back home. Ask any soldier on the ground which airplane they want to see over their heads. There will be only one answer -- A10

      NewEstonia In fact the later US ground attack planes were based in some respects in terms of design principles on the.....IL-2 Sturmovik. Large payload, single engine, large cannon armament, significant armour over vitals.
      Ironic, no?

    • @linkxsc
      @linkxsc 9 лет назад

      Steeltrap Yeah but the A-10 was designed with the writings of Hans Eldrich Rudel (one of the most decorated stuka pilots, and holder of the world record for most combat sorties) in mind.
      But these concepts as a whole, as well as the design of the IL-2, are basically treated as necessity when it comes to a CAS aircraft.
      As to Estonia. Theres a reason that the A-10 is slow. it'll still go balls fast if need be, but is more efficient at lower speeds to make it easier to get guns on target for CAS (and for more loiter time for laser guided missiles and such, cause those take a little bit of time to use)

    I had already thumbs-upped this video by the end of the battle. Wished I could do it all over again when I learned Napalm Priest (great name!) was doing it with a partially upgraded plane.
    The Skyraider was an amazing aircraft, and it's a favorite of mine as well, Jingles. According to one book I read, it was actually possible to take off in the thing with the wings still folded for storage. One of the other fun nicknames for the Skyraider was the "Flying Dump Truck" for the seemingly inexhaustible supply of ground support ordnance it could bring to the battlefield. It was indeed used to cover aircrew rescues, Sandy, as the mission type was nicknamed. That role today is fulfilled by the A-10 Thunderbolt II, which as a slow-flying, tough as nails, loitering airborne munitions dump, is in many ways the same sort of aircraft.

    That was excellent flying on Napalmratte's part.
    I saw a Spad close up about twenty years ago. Until then I hadn't realized how big that aircraft is. It's huge!
    It was being used by the Finns as an air ambulance. They'd cut a door in the fuselage behind the pilot and there was easily enough room for a stretcher, a paramedic or doctor and equipment.

    Ever heard about the nuclear delivery version of the Spad (AD-4B)?
    In the 1950s, before Polaris, they were the US Navy's strategic nuclear weapons platform, delivering a Mk 9 (I think) nuclear bomb (basically a Fat Man reengineered into a more compact system). They used loft bombing with the aid of a mechanical computer - going in at 500 feet, at a predetermined point from the target they'd go into a 45 degree climb and hit go on the bombing computer. When the counter hit zero, a small explosive charge would separate the bomb from the aircraft (blowing it clear of the prop). The bomb would then follow a ballistic trajectory, going up and forwards and detonating as an airburst on the way down. The aircraft would carry on over into a loop, rotate 180 degrees (so it's right side up) and then dive on a reciprocal course, so in theory it would be far enough from the blast (5 or 6 miles away) to survive when the bomb went off. Apparently when they tested it with dummy bombs it would have worked, but I don't think they ever tested it with a live weapon.
    I've wanted to build a model of a loaded AD-4B for ages, but unsurprisingly there isn't a lot of photographic reference material out there, particularly of the bomb itself.
    Also, after the US Navy got rid of the Skyraider (which they only did as they decided after the Forrestal fire to go all jet so they wouldn't have to carry AVGAS on carriers, since it's much more flammable than jet fuel), they passed them on to the USAF and South Vietnamese AF. They're mostly the ones who used them for helicopter escort, especially for missions to pick up downed aircrew (which is where their other nickname of 'Sandy' comes from, sandy missions were Search AND rescue).
    As you might have guessed, I've been a big fan of the Skyraider for a long time.

      Rgmekanic I watch it and I play it but I'm going to stop playing it because it makes me have murderous tendencies towards the developers, I am thinking of un-installing it, its become a steaming pile of shit for anyone trying to do the "free" to play thing. It really tested the murderous tendencies when the said no more x2 for the first victory and then put in a shit reward system, and spawn camping and camping in General has gone up 100 fold since them reworked arcade to have more arty strikes and planes, it was much more fun before where you had to actually get out of the spawn and you know FIGHT. I did like that they changed the way you deploy arty strikes but I don't like that you can get 3 at a time. Something as simple as a tow rope no longer works, I did like they reduced the amount of chance that your tank would spawn on a rock or upside down but I don't like that 100% of their maps have the spawns in the open where you can see the enemies when they appear count to 10 and boom you got a kill I count to 12 since every time I count to ten the grace period seems longer for anyone but me, ones spawn you have to go up a steap hill to get out of the spawn not a problem for a fast tank but slow ones it takes like 2 minutes to go up them by that time the enemy can see you and your dead. Rubber banding is a norm and often rams you into a building killing half your crew or you are behind a building and snap your out in the open and someone shoots and kills you. GRINDING for the next tank in a POS sherman or a hellcat that can't kill at range unless its something like a locust which anything can kill, plane spam everywhere. Logging on once a day is even not worth the 2 minutes it takes to do it and it gets to the point that I'd rather be mauled by a Moose than play warthunder. I just think they should switch from adding new ways to rob people and fix the games mountain of flaws, I watch Jingles because he amuses me and I like to see these people from youtube in a match on my team since most of the people I play against seem to be they are more chicken than a chicken.

    The Horton pilot heard as he went down in flames "You been had by Sandy Spad luv!!" Ah the AD5 / A-1E fat face. The original reason for the phrase "Like a boss!" The flying dump truck is still one of the greatest aircraft ever flown. There wasn't a thing in the inventory it couldn't carry including FAE and nukes. I recommend the book The A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam by Wayne Mutza to anyone wanting to know more about it. Excellent book

    The Skyraider had the best nicknames; Able Dog, Spad, Sandy, Hobo, Firefly, Zorro, The Big Gun, Q-Bird, Old Faithful, Guppy, Flying Dumptruck, Crazy Water Buffalo. It's just the coolest flying machine ever. I mean fuck, one of them from VA-25 even dropped a toilet because fuck you that's why and also to celebrate the 6 millionth pound of ordnance dropped during the Vietnam war.

    hey jingles ive followed you for a while and i used to look forward to and absolutely LOVE your war thunder videos. I used to love it when you played arcade and got like major kill streaks. and i know war thunder arcade has gotten worse over time and you dont enjoy it anymore but simulator and realistic battles tend to drag on and get boring. just every one and a while can you put up a video of you in a tank kicking ass in arcade like old times? thanks jingles, love you and your videos.

    Hey Jingles, Have you seen the game Heroes in the Sky (released 3 March 2015 on Steam)? I don't know why, but it looks remarkably like the World of War Planes effort. I wonder if there was a bit of cross pollination? Or did they just buy the engine?

      paul nathan do you even know how much chaos it would cause if you had collisions on the runway? the trolls would love it and it would cause so many accidents its not even funny

    • @nathanaeledward898
      @nathanaeledward898 9 лет назад

      TheLittleConqueror I know that, but I suppose there's gotta be some way to do it. Even if not, it still irks me.

    • @thelittleconqeror
      @thelittleconqeror 9 лет назад +1

      I do get what you mean its just a case of the only real way to fix that would be for collisions on the ground to be turned on and that in my opinion would cause far more problems than it would solve

    • @nathanaeledward898
      @nathanaeledward898 9 лет назад +1

      TheLittleConqueror Definitely. Maybe they should start all the faster planes in the front of the pack, so even though you could theoretically no-clip other planes, you wouldn't be able to catch the ones in front of you, and the ones behind can't catch you. That way you would stop trolls and griefers, but the game would still look real-er.
