I liked whistle 1 and 2, especially no. 2 , because it sounds like the ones I would hear at my grandmother"s house in Rochester New York. She lived on the Erie Canal across from the main rail yard , which is now the Rochester Airport. Thanks for showing that review, it brought back a lot of memories of my childhood.
I wanna get the Pere Marquette cause Lionel rarely does any Pere Marquette steam that isn’t the berks don’t get me wrong I LOVE the PM Berks but I wanna get the Texas they made years ago and this F-19 I know muffin is making a heavy mikado so I’ll probably get that aswell
Another great installation for the week, been a consistent watcher since it was just loops on the table top, mainline to the other rooms was t even done yet (and it was gonna be the coors factory in the Colorado room), incredible to see the layout so finished
Great video, as always! I just picked up both of mine on Christmas Eve. One of the few Lionel models that actually stand out from the rest. It was worth the wait. Thanks for sharing.
@doubleutubefan5 , yes it is! I pre-ordered two of them. I will be running both of mine at the next Greenburg train show in Edison, NJ this upcoming March, along with my new Legacy C&O H7.
@@DynamicDuo795 Sweet! I'll see if my buddy Sean is going over there. He does the Dakman productions And usually attends the show. If he can get some video of your stuff running that'd be great. I'm out of state for the time being.
I'm 90% sure that is the whistle originally from the c&o 2696 from the legacy empire builder ready to run set from 2008. From what I could find, the closest match to me was whatever whistle the western Maryland j1 Potomacs wore. Great to hear it in a new model after so long. I also appreciate that whistle 1 was ripped straight from the tmcc f19s. It still sounds amazing
I agree Eric, I like the piping on that engine as well. I feel like a LOT of engines are coming out now and it's nice to see them all running on everyone's model railroads!
Wow!! I love the “snow effect” on your layout. That’s my BFIMO! 😂 Great video Eric 👍🏻. At some point The “Sportsman “ ran passenger service from the Greenbriar to Michigan resorts in the winter months. That’s why I want one for the Michigan connection.
Hey Eric, beautiful engine! Also, I really like the "flying" shot you did over the upper level. I thought following the engine as it snaked across the bridge was a really neat angle. Keep up the good work!
That is a lovely steam engine! I've always been curious as to what streamlined engines looked without their streamlining, so that was interesting to find out this what the C&O yellow bellies looked before they received their beautiful shrouting. I love that water cylinder on the front top of the boiler I've always thought that was a cool look! Whistle #5 and bell #4 were my favorites! Great video Eric!
Whistle #1 was actually used on the original TMCC version from 2007. All they did was reuse it on this newer version. It's an actual C&O 6 chime whistle.
I haven't always been super into Lionel but if there's anything I'd like to get to run around my tree or a club's layout, it's 100% gonna be the F-19 now! Also love the first whistle most, such a good tone!
WHAAAT!!! I had no idea that they rebuilt the F19 Pacific's into the streamlined Hudsons!! That is such a cool piece of history! I can see now why you picked #490 very cool! - Ryan
Whistle #3 was powerful and sharp and would really get your atention at a crossing. I ordered the Sleigh Bell Express Christmas edition and I wonder if the #5 will be replaced by the Christmas horn. I hope it has the power to pull the 7 21" passenger cars of the Sleigh Bell Express because the train is quite heavy. The Sleigh Bell Express E8 locomotives handle them quite well but the 2 A units have 4 motors. This locomotive will probably have 1.
Whistle #1 was actually the same whistle the original 2007 TMCC release of the F19 had, although they've updated it to give it Legacy quilling. I've never heard of Lionel doing this before, but it's super cool because there were some awesome sounding whistles in the TMCC era. #5 was from the C&O Berkshire in the 2007 Empire Builder set. It's nice seeing Lionel reaching back to pull some "oldies but goodies" from the archives.
Great video. I have a Lionel train I got in 1950 on display. I was five. love the history lesson you gave on this engine. I never liked the yellow engine but never realised it was the same engine. My favorite's are the northern engines CNR ran as they shook the ground as they passed you. When I was a boy I stood by the track as they passed pulling a hundred cars as slag out of Hamilton on a two percent grade. They had Vanderbilt tenders. Recently I went to Sugar Creek and theirs's had a commonwealth pilot.
Great review & run. I like whistle # 1 since its identical to the whistle on my early 2000 TMCC F19 "George Washington". Glad to see all of the detail is still there on this latest model. For me, the long Vanderbilt tender is best feature. Interesting history about the 490 transition to a Hudson. I hope Lionel hears our pleas for a Legacy Yellowbelly.
I can explain one reason why they have better pulling power. Take a new one apart, and you'll see that Lionel started using Canon motors to replace the Pittman ones. I believe they are brushless, I could be wrong. But definately an improvement over those heavy underpowered Pittman motors they used for years. Also, even better low speed control now too
I’m not so sure because I’ve got some identical releases over time and they have the same motor but the new one still has more pulling power. After a lot of investigation my best guess is that the motor driver boards have been improved.
@@Ericstrains Yes. I've taken a lot of the new steam locomotives apart. And I can't tell you when they started using Canon motors, but it was after 2017 or so. Maybe a year or two after, but I agree with you on the motor drives. And the new Canon motors have a lot more torque on the low speed side. Higher speeds, they drop a little. But not enough to really see a decrease in performance. They also run at less amperage too, which is a big imorovement over those huge Pittman motors
Great review. I got the 494 grey boiler. I agree on the whistle, I’ve been favoring and using #5 mostly but all the selections are pretty good on this model with #1 being right behind #5. And as always in usually go with the lowest tone bell, idk why I do that, but it’s what I do.
@Ericstrains that makes sense too, it might actually be a change in the overall hearing itself. But then again, a combination of different gearing, a stronger motor and a better driver board is more likely main reason.
Hey Eric, you mentioned in a previous q&a video that your running the with and base3 for command control. Besides the single wire going to the outputs of the you from the base3 what are you using for an interconnect cable between the base and tiu?
Great vid Eric if you wanna know what the Halloween one has I posted a video not to long ago I kinda followed your format lol I’ve been watching ya since 2014
Someone over at Illumination / Universal must have seen one of those “Yellow Bellies” before creating Despicable Me. Those were the first of the Minions.
Model railroading was my first love but space was the problem. I enjoyed HO scale but I wasn't going to brail scale to save room. So I switched to plastic and resin models.
I am ordering some O72 Fastrack curves and plan on getting a Vision line Locomotive. I have a couple of transformers including a ZW and I have two Trains that use Fastrack (Hogwarts and one other) I also have the Cab3 app on my phone. What power connectors do I need for the Vision line or Legacy stuff. The Bricks that came with the ready to run stuff do not look good for the More expensive trains?
uh, in those days, radio communications between tower and engineer were simply not possible. trains were controlled by the use of signals; flags, lights, signs, gates,
Im 62 as a kid i grew up along 2 tracks b&o then chessie and mostly f series trainsbut ònce an awhile a steam engine would come threw pulling freight but to young to know what kind of steam engine it was
I love watching you vieos of your layout i have one lionel steam engine that was my moms from somewhere in late fourtys to early fiftys but i always had ho so after 30 years im getting back into it i have all my ho except track i have all o gauge trackbut dont know if i can afford o gauge even menards i am going to purchase one of my favorite ho trains bauchmann spectrum ( only cause i cant afford some of the better brands) daylight spcl with 4 cars track power control for 359.$ but you give me alot of good ideasthank you . Ps it will take me about 6 months to get out of nursing home in to my new space .
Video Notes:
1. This video has chapters for those who wish to skip around.
@Ericstrains C&O 490 is a L1 Hudson type not a F-19
Like video

Glad to hear it brought back some good memories!
The defaut whistle is actually the one that was original to the TMCC version he mentioned in the video
You're comparing a C&O steamer to a New York Central engine. No comparison.
"Smaller than he thought it would be" That's what she said! 🤣 Happy New Year!
wow , 70 years ago this is what my childhood Lionel train sounded like , in my head.......nice presentation ...and layout.
Fantastic review as usual! Outstanding model!💯👍
Glad you enjoyed it
This is the one I ordered! Excited to see it for myself. Always enjoy watching your stuff Eric!
Awesome!
Man, I love the elesco feed water heater hanging off the front-end like that! Lionel has a post-war shell like that I'd like to get. 😮
Really love that aggressive look on the smoke box with the air compressors and the feed water heater
Yeah, those look really nice.
I wanted a Lionel Century Club Trainmaster AA Demonstrator Set for 25 years. Dreams can come true !!
I ordered the Pere Marquette and am having it weathered by Mr. Heike at Mr. Muffins. I can't wait!

Yeah, it's been a long journey!
Getting good with the drone!
My favorite time of the year is Eric’s trains Christmas bonanza

Great! I can't wait to see both of yours running at the next Edison Greenburg show in March. Looking forward to that.
I'm looking forward to the March show! I'll see you then.
Hey Alex, I knew were waiting for these! Is the model exactly what you wanted?
@doubleutubefan5 , yes it is! I pre-ordered two of them. I will be running both of mine at the next Greenburg train show in Edison, NJ this upcoming March, along with my new Legacy C&O H7.

Whistle 5 sounds more like a ship whistle than a train whistle. That's the one I'd choose because I love low notes to no end.
Yeah me too.

@tonierbuckle0202 You might be right, but who can be 100% certain without asking a Lionel employee.
I use that one on my Halloween its spooky to me and I would use the werewolf one but it sets of my dog every time
@thefuriousgamer2553 I get it, man. Dogs are adorable, but can be annoying sometimes.
The F-19 is one of my favourite steam engines from the USA. Great model.
I agree Eric, I like the piping on that engine as well. I feel like a LOT of engines are coming out now and it's nice to see them all running on everyone's model railroads!
It's a fun time to be a model railroader!

Yeah never really put 2 and 2 together and realized that this 490 was the same as the streamlined 490
An awesome locomotive (my favorite whistle is 1), and awesome shots of it running.
@rolothePRRQ2 will you make a trainz whistle of it?
That is a beautiful engine! Great consist of boxes and reefers also!
Loved the comment that was displayed at 0:43!
Whistle 1, bell 4. Love the snow effects, perfect for the season.
Whistle #1 was actually used on the original TMCC version from 2007. All they did was reuse it on this newer version. It's an actual C&O 6 chime whistle.
The detail on the front of the boiler is chef's kiss.
Always love your videos, Eric!
Awesome video I orders 490 as well waiting on Pats Trains to get his shipment in. Thanks for sharing!
That is Absolutely Beautiful !!!!
Such a nice track, too
Thanks
This train was premo start to finish. Thanx big guy.😊
Great information thank's for showing 👏
"I know thirteen hundred dollars seems crazy high to normal sane people" lol... we are neither normal nor sane! Merry Christmas Eric.
Beautiful engine, love that detailing on the front and the tender. Awesome review, Eric! Bill B.
I haven't always been super into Lionel but if there's anything I'd like to get to run around my tree or a club's layout, it's 100% gonna be the F-19 now!

I agree, the plumbing detail on that f19 is beautiful.

Train look fun 👍

Number 1 horn. Number 4 bell. Fantastic sound quality. O gauge has such a huge advantage in sound quality over ho, or n scale.
Gorgeous!
That #5 whistle is one they haven't used since 2007 I believe. It's off the first legacy C&O 2-8-4 they did, nice to hear it back.
Awesome video 👏, I like Bell #4 & Whistle #4 😁... Thanks Eric
Thanks for the video. That locomotive is amazing. I think for the price it should look that fantastic. I like bell 1 and whistle 1 and 5.
Favorite whistles #1, #4, #5 favorite bells #1

WOW! Great overhead shots! How did you do that?

Love the consist
🇮🇹 io sono italiano , i tuoi treni sono Bellissimi !!!!👍
Whistle #5 is used on the LionChief Plus 2.0 Berkshires
Looks amazing thank you I love your videos they are a big help happy new year to you an your family 🙏💙⛪GOD bless
That's really cool locomotives
Fun Fact: C&O in the later years used their steam engines w/ Vanderbilt tenders to pull MoW trains. 👍🏻
-Happy Rails …🚂💭
Nice engine!
It is a pretty one. Whistle 1 for sure. Nice Buck knife too.
Thanks!
I like your Central of Georgia Railway t-shirt.
13:40
Eric what is that box car product code? I love the colors and details, I want to know what to search up on Trainz website for my self thanks
I love this
Whistle # 4 was my favorite and #1 was my next then #5 was my third favorite, ❤ What curve radius can this F19 go around?
I L💚VE WHISTLES!!!!!!
Good grief! 3 pounds 8 ounces out of a pacific??? Man, that pulling power HAS to be due to the motors they put in these things.
I don't think it's the actual motor, I think it's the motor driver board that's controlling the thing.
@Ericstrains that makes sense too, it might actually be a change in the overall hearing itself. But then again, a combination of different gearing, a stronger motor and a better driver board is more likely main reason.

I don't connect the TIU and Base3 together at all. It's not necessary.
@ thank you for the reply
She is GORGEOUS
I have been around the n@w 611 no 5 sounds right
that is one beautiful loco! one question though, what brand track are you using?
I use Atlas track
@Ericstrains thanks!
Great vid Eric if you wanna know what the Halloween one has I posted a video not to long ago I kinda followed your format lol I’ve been watching ya since 2014
Whistle #4 sounds like the Nathan six chime on NKP 765.

Sure has come a long way from my late friend Al's 773 Hudson. Bur, c'mon! A Chessie extended vision caboose behind an otherwise vintage reefer train?
I love them all lol but 5 is my favorite

Eric, have you ever thought about running all your Norfolk southern Heritage units? And which ones are you missing?
Right now I've got, off the top of my head, 14 of them. Still have a few gaps to fill.
Which unit is your favorite

My Favorite is #4 it The Same as the Nickel Plate Road 765
How do you test the pulling power?
That's top secret!
