  • SFU kinesiology professor Stephen Robinovitch is one of the lead authors of a new study that uses video for the first time to analyze how and why the elderly fall. Researchers collected digital video footage of elderly residents falling at two care homes in Metro Vancouver and cross-referenced the incidents with reports filed by staff.

Falling just started about 6 months ago.. I’ve tripped over something a few times. But it was loss of balance I can just be standing there turn around in fall.. my knees are already bad I can’t risk ending up in a facility😢

I was in hospital all day with my grandma who fell on the cement and cut her head open. She needed stitches across her forehead. 😢

Breaks my heart to see these elderly people fall. My 65 yr old mom recently had her first fall, about 3-4 days ago and says that it REALLY made an impact on her body. She's extremely sore and still in some pain. That's a little scary because I've been learning ( through these videos) that after a fall, it's just a downward spiral, physically, for the elderly. 😥

Don't count her out so quickly. I'm almost 64 and I have fallen several times the most recent was a few hours ago. Yes, it hurts and your body aches 😢 but it hurts our ego the most. Today when I fell it was on the curb of a busy street. I was wearing a brand new pair of hiking boots and I had failed to lace them up all the way, properly. The clamps on both boots became interconnected causing me to trip. It's SO EMBARRASSING! My back is sore, but I'm not going down permanently that easily. Help your mom get thru it, but don't treat her like she is ready for death. She will be ok! ❤❤

Use high back chairs to form a walkway.
Attachments to the side walls. Use colored pool noodles for visual cue.
Shoes should be intuitive. The tennis shoes are too stiff . The rigidity refers to the actual joint.
Some people would benefit from negative heel.
Most everybody would benefit from an insert.

My 88 year old Dad has fallen 3 times in the last couple of years. Broke his right knee cap, fractured left shoulder. Another time broke 3 ribs. I’m taking him to a Geriatric Dr!
