- Kern River Fishing Report - Fall/Winter Conditions
Watch Guide Guy Jeans discuss the current fishing conditions on the Kern River as he fishes to rising trout on the upper Kern.
Weather and Water Conditions:
Weather: December brings cooler temperatures to the Kern River area. Expect daytime highs in the 50s to low 60s (F) and nighttime lows often below freezing.
Water Flow: The river's flow usually decreases during winter, making wading easier. Flow rates can vary, so it's best to check current conditions before heading out.
Fishing Tips:
Fly Selection: During December, nymphing is often the most productive method, but the occasional hatch of Blue Wing olives and Midges can change the whole game. Recommended flies include:
Dry Flies: Parachute Adams 18-22, BWO 18-24, BWO Emerger 18-24
Nymphs: Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, and Prince Nymphs (sizes 14-18)
Midges: Olive Zebra Midge, WD-40, and Brassie (sizes 18-22)
Streamers: Woolly Buggers and Micro Clousers can be effective for targeting larger fish.
Techniques: Focus on slower, deeper pools where fish are likely to hold during colder months. Use a strike indicator to detect subtle takes when nymphing.
Locations:
Upper Kern River: Above Lake Isabella, particularly around the Johnsondale Bridge and the Forks of the Kern, is good winter fishing.
Lower Kern River: Below Lake Isabella can also provide productive fishing, especially in the campground areas. Check for recent changes in fishing conditions by visiting the Kern River Fly Shop website or contacting them directly is recommended.
