I don’t even play guitar, but have watched every video Ted has put out. There’s something soothing and fascinating about watching a master plying his trade…
I'm usually a natural finish kind of guy, but that black one looked quite sharp, only to then learn its covering some pretty wood. What a rollercoaster...
cool showcase.. I'm honored to try one today.. nice run down on this model,, this one is a cool little parlor sized arch top.. it sounds warm L30 resonates
Luthiers used to make contrabasses with arched tops and flat backs, and later on the shoulders got shaved down too. The backs on those love to crack. I have one that looks like a shake roof inside, because of all the cleats added over more than a century and a half and some change.
What beautiful guitars. You’re the best. Hope the owner enjoys his glow in the dark dots and that his fuzz tone sounds groovy on those gorgeous instruments.
I dabble with electric guitar repair and building. I love these videos and I use them as a reminder to NEVER work on an acoustic or hollow body guitar. This is a skill best left to men like you.
The 14 3/4” Gibson archtops often sound surprisingly good as acoustic archtops even though they were among the cheapest models they ever made with the Gibson name on the headstock. Thanks for sharing the work on these.
You are an extremely interesting person. I definitely wouldn't have made it through this winter, had it not been for your video's. Thank you so much for everything!
"Glad I had a chance to work on these" is not something I expected to hear from a luthier about f hole guitars... but they are indeed lovely, classy things 😊
@@RockStarOscarStern634 , The acoustic guitars themselves are more likely to feed back than the pickups are, and if the guitar body and strings are oscillating to the sound from the PA or monitors, then the pickup will reproduce it, and there will be feedback. I thought my question would be pretty obvious....
@@panzerlieb , It seems doubtful that it's a piezo because it would need to be in good solid contact with the guitar top in order to pick up any sound. Strings do not transmit sound magnetically into a piezo pick up.
Re: glow in the dark paint: Lume for watches, the stuff that makes watch hands and indices glow in the dark, comes in a number of shades and can be mixed to exactly match what you want it to look like.
I feel that in addition to lessons in guitar design, history and repair, we’re also getting subtle hints of cinematography. This edition was not the first to harken Citizen Kane to my mind.
Oh man! One of my favorite acoustic guitars. This model was built to be played. No frills, and they put out that perfect tone you want from a Gibson workhorse
Ok…. I have a suggestion…. And im not being a comment section asshole…. Why scrape the bevel in the pickguard when you have a beautiful router table? You could get the correct angle router bit and have that done in 3 mins…. Im sure you do it by hand for a reason…. Excellent vids.. your lessons are the industry standard….
I like that bridge/saddle design. It allows for intonation, without having to move the bridge itself to all kinds of cockeyed angles. P.S.: That's some nice swamp blues there. 😁✌🖖
A surprisingly small spritz of water solves static problems in coffee grinders, wonder if that works with router tables too. Not really sure why it works in the coffee mill situation but it definitely does
VERY coincidentally today I learned that blues singer Sam Chatmon played a Gibson L50 and his protege Libby Rae Watson plays a black Gibson that looks exactly like these L30s!
It's funny you mentioned "glow in the dark" paint for the side dots. Just before you mentioned it I was wondering..."do they make glow in the dark side dot material for guitars?"...So I paused the video, and looked it up, and they sure do make glow in the dark side dot material...Made by a company called "Luminlay". They make several sizes, and it looks white, but comes in glow blue, or glow green.
I see a twoodford video, I click like and settle back to be entertained. Thanks, Ted!
WOW I do the same thing, and the like button is hit first..I know its gonna be good.
Same
Better than porn.
@@ahf5471 Guitar porn! LOL
Working on a old K, and I was kind of dithering on what to use for a pick up, thank you!
I don’t even play guitar, but have watched every video Ted has put out. There’s something soothing and fascinating about watching a master plying his trade…
I'm sure people who didn't paint also enjoyed Bob Ross for the same thing
I'm usually a natural finish kind of guy, but that black one looked quite sharp, only to then learn its covering some pretty wood. What a rollercoaster...
I don't play guitar, nor repair them, I just enjoy watching a skilled craftsman at work. Thanks!
Wow some of the best sounding guitars ive heard on this channel, they both turned out awesome!
As you were covering the history. I like that part where your reflection was in the pick guard. Very a mysterious and very cool!
I noticed that, very first thing! I thought I was the only weird one!
It makes me laugh that anyone would criticize your work. You are pretty incredible in my opinion. I'm a guitar builder and repair guy.
Indeed,
I guess it just goes to show you how some folks are so unhappy they’ll go through extreme measures to make others feel like them or try to.
Thanks much for the background and the tips.
Lotta blues sound in those two. I can easily see how one might fall in love with that sound.
cool showcase.. I'm honored to try one today.. nice run down on this model,, this one is a cool little parlor sized arch top.. it sounds warm L30 resonates
I’m so happy you keep a consistent feed of videos!
There very few videos that I watch as soon as I see it pop up. Yours Ted are the top of that list

Ted is a soothsayer. His precision is alluring to all of us tech nerds, and there’s something about his voice that is…. calming, to say the least!
Simply amazing work.
Man! Those things have a great Delta blues sound, Holy Moly!
Gonna like it before I watch it cos they’re always amazing videos with great info and skills. Cheers

@@ian-c.01 you learn something new everyday I guess. I’ll remember for this channel. Cheers fella
hi ted. i just love to watch your vids. the world seems better after watching .please never stop
Nice guitars! I also enjoyed the swampy playing on this episode. 👍
That tuner clamp was a brilliant idea 👍🏻
These sound FANTASTIC! I'm in love w/ the richness of the black one for sure.
What beautiful guitars. You’re the best. Hope the owner enjoys his glow in the dark dots and that his fuzz tone sounds groovy on those gorgeous instruments.
You, sir, are an educator, historion and Master... As in old time masterpiece.... Proper... 🏆
Sunburst sounds just amazing, one of the best archtop sounds I've heard
I dabble with electric guitar repair and building. I love these videos and I use them as a reminder to NEVER work on an acoustic or hollow body guitar. This is a skill best left to men like you.
Your channel is gold! Really really great stuff.
very Ry Cooderish on the black one, which is a helluva attractive looking instrument!
nice work..as usual. was watching and imagine it's a prety enoying thing to have the pickup set just under the place i use to pick..
The 14 3/4” Gibson archtops often sound surprisingly good as acoustic archtops even though they were among the cheapest models they ever made with the Gibson name on the headstock. Thanks for sharing the work on these.
They really do sound amazing. I think the black has the edge on tone.
Wow! Just plain: Wow! I think I'm done being impressed by your skills and then: Wow. Keep on Ted! ALWAYS look forward to your videos!!!
“No need to worry. It’s gonna be ok.” 😂 while I learn something each video I do love the humor.
I figured there was no chance that old BB pickup would sound good. I was wrong. Sounds terrific!
Very Tasteful Work Ted!!! Beautifully compliments the instrument without drawing your eye. Sight and Sound, 😊
Brilliant as always
Master ....is a good description of your level of workmanship
With the black guitar, looks like the pickup has been there from day one. Excellent job!
Thank you, Ted 👍🏻 Your videos help me understand my guitars!
I've lost count how times I've thought that scuff on your wall is some dust on my screen and tried to remove it.
You are an extremely interesting person. I definitely wouldn't have made it through this winter, had it not been for your video's. Thank you so much for everything!
Clever, thoughtful work as always. Your playing at the end of this one was very tasty.
"Glad I had a chance to work on these" is not something I expected to hear from a luthier about f hole guitars... but they are indeed lovely, classy things 😊
Thanks for the tip about using a razor to scrape the bevel onto the edge of a pick guard. I will definitely try this.
Beautiful guitars and work done. They sound amazing!
Great relaxing video once again. Love the lint on the tape trick.
They look great, but they sound even better. I love the sunburst so much.
Better sounding than I thought, very old school classic sound🤘🏼
The burst sounds amazing...
Always a pleasure...
...thanx Teach
Awesome tones from both of them! Nice playing too!
I love You Ted! RESPECT!
sounds great. Thank you!
Splendid !
Those just have a 1930's "Feel" to them. Old timey movie style. Just something about that tone. Love it!
I can hear some old Deep South blues. Beautiful guitars, and always awesome workmanship. Thank you! Peace 💫
I worked on one of these recently. It had the prettiest Brazilian rosewood fretboard and the tightest grain spruce top. Sounded great.
Sir, your work never ceases to amaze!
These are both wonderful old Gibsons. Great update on each. Thanks Ted
These definitely sound great amplified! I wonder if you can get them up to a good stage volume without having feedback problems.
These are wax potted pickups

@@goodun2974 They've worked around that by having the soundboard cut half as thin.
I know the Barkus Berry pickup is more like a piezo pickup than a magnetic pickup. It shouldn’t feedback if you treat it like an acoustic pickup.

I love your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them. You clearly enjoyed playing both of those old Gibsons.
The sound is so amazing.
I really liked this short episode! Nice 30s gibson getting some properly done mods. When done they both looked and sounded amazing. Awesome content.
I feel that in addition to lessons in guitar design, history and repair, we’re also getting subtle hints of cinematography. This edition was not the first to harken Citizen Kane to my mind.
They sound great! Especially the sunburst.
The intro music sounds like Django Reinhart. Someone asked if you did the music Ted. Idk who's music it is, but it sounds like Django.
Great. Thanks Ted
Best luthier on RUclips!
Very nice guitars....I like them a lot. Great work and thanks for the history as well. A nice way to start my Sunday :)
They sound great and nice playing. Awesome work as always.
Great video instructif thanks I fix my guitar thanks to your videos take care 👍

Such Great techniques - Watching: Im like yea yeah cool, then @19:10 "Guitar Tuner clamp" mind-is-blown! thanks for your expertise!!
Those are both awesome.. sound very nice! :)
Barcus-Berry, I haven't seen those since the 70s!
Love those Barcus Berry pickups...as used by Chris Whitley on his National.
I had an L17 for quite a while until it was badly damaged. The neck had a triangular cross section. Black finish. Spruce soundboard.

Had to pause and go take a walk to cool off when you showed that figured maple on the one PAINTED BLACK.
Feckin' Gibson.
A surprisingly small spritz of water solves static problems in coffee grinders, wonder if that works with router tables too. Not really sure why it works in the coffee mill situation but it definitely does
Wow. Night and day. The black one sounds awesome and the sunburst sounds tinny, thin and cheap.
My grandparents had a Kalamazoo just like those 2. Was a great guitar and one of my cousins got it! 😢
man i love your clever solutions such a great job
Always good to hear from "Mudbone" Woodford.
They Both Sound Great...

Great work Great playing Great videos
Absolutely incredible! 🏆
Putting the endpin jack through the hole in the tailpiece also grounds the strings, which is a good thing with magnetic pickups
Nice, I've got an Eastman archtop in the shop getting a compensated saddle and Krivo Micro Manouche installed. Nice sounding pickups
That black guitar sounds sweet amplified!

Bluesgrass. Surprisingly handsome, that blackie. With that pick up, it looks like an expensive boutique guitar.
You’ve given yourself away Ted. You’re a mean guitar player on top of everything else 👌🏼
