- At last I got permission for my new radio
tower, I did have to compromize on the
size of the tower and the antenna's I
wanted to put on it but something is much
better than nothing at all.
WOW! An engineering marvel! As I was watching your video, my wife even glanced over at my screen and commented on how simple and elegant your system is. Brilliant, sir. Well done!

Hello Jamie thanks for your comment and praise, I can't however take
credit for the design as this is a common design that I just copied in
my own style to suit my needs.
cheers Nigel
I only wish I had a workshop like yours ... if only ... great build quality every thing well engineered ... solid engineering ... nothing flimsy the way it should be ... well done.
Hi ginger thx for taking the time to comment hope you enjoy the video's cheers Nigel
Brilliant mate! Great job on your tower!
hi don thx for the comment cheers.
Fantastic Nigel and Hazel. What a brilliant concept and construction. That video is dated 2013 so I hope you have your antenna mounted and producing some great results for your log book. 73, Jamie VK2YCJ
Beautiful. Built to last !
Hello John thx for the comment I do like to build things to last :)
Very nice to see something so well done! K4BMW in the US
Hello Brian thanks for watching and the nice comment all the best from the UK
Nigel
Very nice........ Thanks for sharing......
Very nice work!
Awesome job . Well done . I have read the comments. I got a lot of information already. I hope to start this project soon . thanks again for a job well done . Hope to chat again 73 from tom USA
Hello Thomas good to hear from you I wish you all the best with your build and hope all goes well for you.
Thx Nigel
I figured if you drafted this up in a design build doc we fellow ham people would gladly chip in for a download and you'd be off buying that beam.............
This is the neatest and most functional tower ive seen in years. Here in Australia our leading tower maker has closed and options are thin when your hoping to use free standing. I must admit when you winched that whole tower single handed it was a suprise. Brilliant work.
Hello Mark and thanks for taking the time to comment, The design is pretty simple and I think I cover
everything in the video but maybe I should take the time to put it into a doc of some sort.
I have had the MA5b antenna on the mast for a long time now and even in strong winds never had
a problem, I am not sure how it would stand up being taller or with a bigger beam I think that would
need some testing but for me here it does a great job.
cheers Nigel
A work of art ,,, Bravo ...
Hi Louis Thx for your comment :)
Really is a Great looking mast , Really nicely made 👍 regards de 'Gw0wvl' .
Hello there thx for the comment and the praise cheers Nigel
Great Job Nigel. I didn't know you were building it. 73 Good Luck DXing
Hi John thx for the comment always good to chat mate.
UA6ANU I liked it very much...
Hi and thankyou for your comment.
Very nicely done!
Hi there thx for the comment cheers
Very well done. 73's
Hello Terry thx for the comment.
Hi Mark sorry your having problems I do hope you get sorted soon.
I used about 1 and 1/2 ton of ballast mix and about 5 or 6 bags of cement I think
mixed at 3 to 1 I also drove 2 9 foot long earth spikes in the ground diagonal from the mast
this was earthed to the 500mm anchor bolts for the tower. Hope this helps.
cheers Nigel
HI Mark I am not sure if the bags were 20 or 25kg I got them from B&Q standard blue circle bags
but after a night thinking I am now sure I did 4 to 1 mix. The hole I dug in my garden was about
3 1/2 foot square I was planning more but I hit a chalk and flint layer so called it a day :)
cheers for now Nigel.
Very nice work. Very smooth operation. KE7GMS
Hello John thanks for the comment.
Nigel
This is exactly what I need. Most of the commercially available masts are far too long in the down position. I only have a tiny back garden and I need it to extend to about 35 or 40ft.
Mind you £500 seems a lot of money for all that's in it but I have most of the stuff already. I just need 3 or 4 sections of box and with the local prices here I'm sure it'll be a few hundred.
+Big Ian Builds Hi thx for the comment the £500 was for everything including concrete only my time
was free :) I hope you get yours sorted out give me a shout if you need any help.
Cheers Nigel
Hello again! seen all of your videos and im going to replicate then but, I know that the base plate and arms that hold the base tube are 16mm, the base tube is 100x100x3 mm but how long is it? and the 3 other parts? they look more rectangular than square so I presume a 100x75x3? and the nylon bushes in all the 2 bottom parts? love you antenna tower and it might be a new trend soon greetings from Chile CE1PTT
Hi there the tube is 100x100 then 75x75 then 50x50 and the nylon bushes stop the
sections moving around to much. As for the lenth of the sections thats upto your
needs mine are about 4 mtrs each give or take.
good luck with yours Nigel
very nice job
G0SQI - Is there any chance you have the plans you used to make this...or if it's a personal design, did you draw up designs. I want to do this as a project with my son and daughter. We're trying to bring internet services to our rural neighborhood. I feel it would be an awesome home-school project. I know you go over quite a bit in the video, I just wanted to have some plans to go over...I'm one of those instructions work best type of people.
Many thanks,
Mike-
+Michael Twigg Hello Michael sorry for the delay in replying, I idea was all in my head I new what I wanted to do so I just did it all as i went along.
I have done a few of these types in the past so it wasn't all new to me. Good luck with your project.
Cracking work om
Hello Denmonkey thx for the comment .
superb job!!! maybe you could include a materials list in the description and where you would find the necessary items. purely for informational purposes only (obviously).
Hi Richard thx for the comment most of the parts I just had but the steel box section can be got from any local steel or fabrication company and anyone thinking of building one would know these things :) cheers
Excellent...
Nice job man
Hello Jaz thx for the comment.
Hi Nigel :) Fantastic Video . A few questions. what size box did you use where did you get the bushes and bits . I might have a go making one if you don't mind. I can only get 10 mm plate steel 2foot square I can brace the box all the way down and have a box sleeve into the concrete about 3 foot so its just a bit more security as the plate steel im using is only 10mm thick. can get 100 mm box and 90 and 80 & 70 in 7m lengths. so 2 of them will give me about 12 meters if I need help is it ok if I ask
Richard.
Dear Nigel,
Beautiful work. Well engineered. Can you share how you attached the cable to raise both masts?
Randall, KE8DQV
+Randall Reihing Hi Randall If you mean at the bottom of each post section I made a small steel
plate with a grove in it just a bit smaller than the cable size. Then I drilled and taped 2 holes in
the post and clamped the cable to the bottom of the tower section the cable then comes u and
out the top of the section through a pulley and attaches to the next section down with a ring bolt.
When the lower section goes up it pulls the next section up just like a fire man's ladder.
Hope this helps.
+G0SQI
Hi Nigel,
Thank you for your explanation on the cable routing and anchoring. It helped a lot. I hope to replicate your excellent retractable mast in a few weeks. Sincerely,
Randall Reihing KE8DQV
G0SQI i understand this may sound a little weird but the cable mechanism is genuis. Its so simple in hindsight. I've been trying to work out a clean way to do it and your method is perfect. You really should draw up plans. I would happily pay for your work and it always helps fund your hobby. You could pdf them and sell it on ebay for 20 bucks, pounds.
I would buy the plans 👍
Great! I'll try to make something similar. Not so perfect like yours, but I'll try :)
Good luck!
Good job, I would like to build a similar tower.
hi there thx for the comment I am sure when you do your tower you will be very pleased with it and it won't cost a fortune :) cheers
beautiful,what beam did you installed?
do you have any photos of the actual setup now?
thanks great video

gervais ve2ckn
Hi There I put a Cuscraft MA5b 3 element multibeam and also a 6mtr monoband 3 ele beam
you can see these in a shot on the Motorized Tower video which is one of my latest video's
cheers Nigel
Quite possible the the largest case of overkill on a base in human history.
Only in your opinion, Now that I have a 10ft extension in the top section and 2x 3 element beams and an 18 ft vertical on the top it does quite well thx.
@@fixitnige You could place 4X the antenna on that bass and still have reserve capacity.
nice I would like some plans on how you made this
Hello tony thx for the comment glad you like it. I don't do plans I just look at what I want to do and figure it out but If you watch the video's closely they are easy to build.
Cheers Nigel
Nige at 0.42 seconds into the video it shows a block of wood is it a 4x2 i was wondering what size of gap you have between the post thats fixed and the one that tilts looks like 4 inch ?.
Hi there saltire yes your right it is about 4 inch it ccan be any size gap0 I suppose I had a locking pin at the bottom and a stop which works well.
@@fixitnige Thanks ill post a video when im done on the home stretch now .
How does the cable connect to the sections to raise it. Running on rollers ???? Do you have any close up video on how this works please
Hello Adrian you can see from 3.54 where the cable connects to the outside it then goes over
the roller and connects to the bottom of the next section. easy :)
cheers Nigel
Do you have a printed diagram one could obtain for a small fee showing how you made this (dimensions, parts, ect...), a "How to"?
hello william please read the other comments and watch other videos hope they explain all thx.
Great workmanship. KJ4ITH
Hi Mikie thx for the message maybe catch you on air I often monitor 28.720
Nigel,
i would live too see how you did it for the inside cable ,how did you do for the 2 smaller tube to get inside the bigger one?
thats the point i am missing here.
thanks for the video,it helps me a lot for mine here.
73 from Quebec
Gervais ve2ckn
Hello Gervais the cable from the winch goes over the top of the first section down inside and attaches to the bottum on the secound section.
next a cable fixed to the top of the first section goes over the top of the secound section and down inside and attaches to the bottum of the top section.
When you start winding the winch you are only pulling the secound section
but because of the wire rope on the next section it pulls up the top section
just like a 3 section ladder. Hope that explains it :)
Hello again its all in the video please watch it more closely I show the section going into the next one its very easy.
@@fixitnige you have 2 winches: 1 to raise the big square pipe.the 2 cnd one for the telescopic tube?
@@fixitnige do you have a link to see your hf antenna installed? thanks gervais ve2ckn
@@gervaisfillion9417 Yes one winch tilts the tower over and the other raises and lowers it. You can do it with one which if you route the cable right. cheers
Constructions video available ??
Hi there are a few videos on my channel with tower building here is a link to one potion. ruclips.net/video/sJrwAVCz7gY/видео.html
@@fixitnige Thanks sir.
what is the locking pin called?, where can i get a set, at this point in making one for me. thanks good build.
Hello Piper the locking pins are called ,,,,,,,wait for it,,,,,,,,,wait for it ,,,,,Locking pins ..ta dahhhh and I made mine thats why its called home built. :)
cheers Nigel
@@fixitnige i guess that is why i cant fine them anywhere .
Great job. Have you any drawings for it.
Hi donal thx for the comment no I don't have drawings but you can work it all out from the video it's very easy to make :)
well done im looking for a tower as low cost as possible could you send me a diagram of this kind regards gordon
Good video. Have you earthed the mast?
HI There 5bassip, yes before the concrete went in I hammered in 2 long earth rods at about 45deg angle
both about 6 foot long and connected them to the mast main bolts. The Mast and MA5B Antenna have
been standing for nearly 4 years now with no trouble at all, I have oiled the cable and pulleys from
time to time tho.
Cheers Nigel
Nice Job,
Is there any way I might buy a set of drawings or sketch and material list from you. There is no way that I can get the tower I want or antenna for it now that I am retired. I would love to hae something like this and would work well in my area. Like to hear from you on this and see what we might do.
Kent
Hello Kent good to hear from you, I don't work from drawings or plans I think of what I want and build it
out of my head or sometimes I will look at a picture and work out how it works and build it. As for the
steel it is just box section steel 4inch/3inch and 2inch with a steel plate on the bottom of each section
that slides inside the next.
cheers and good luck with yours Nigel
OKay thanks for the info, I will go back and put things together from that.
Kent
What is the wall thickness of the mast?
Hi Joseph it is 3mm 1/8 inch.
nice job ve7 dkz
Hi Dan thx for the comment glad you liked the video.
did you install a stop so each peace dont exspand up to far so it dont fall over
Hi Joseph yes when the locking pins engage at the top of the tower lift this is also a warning not to go pst this. Even tho the sections can't come out they would bend as they would be only a couple of inches of steel left in the section. Hope this helps.
@@fixitnige plan to build one I plan to install a stop si they don't crank up to far and fall out
sangat bagus....
Thank you MR.BIG
GOSQI what is the length of each square tube
Hello E Dre I think it was something like 12 / 13 and 14 Feet roughly.
cheers Nigel
thank you very much I really like your design
Great tower....Guess you have an antenna on it by now Nigel
Hello Rich thx for your comment, Yes the antenna's are
on now a Cushcraft MA5B 5 Band and a UHF/VHF Vertical.
Can be seen in the next video.
Cheers Nigel
I'll take a look Nigel.
How many dollars U.S. is 500 lbs.
Hello Piper at the current exchange rate it would be $613.
How to built?
hi if you watch the video you will see how I built it.
Hi, Excellent construction and workmanship.
I am building a tilt over mast also, not at fancy as yours though.
Mine consist of 2 supporting 2.5"x2/5" square tube with 1/4" thick wall by 12 feet with the main 24' mast tilting in between.
This 24 foot section is the main main mast and it is also 2.5x.25 with 1/4 in thickness.
Im using a 3500LBS wench and im wonder if the MAIN mast will be tooooo heavy.
Any idea how I could figure that out?
.
here is what im building but with square steel tube.
wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Tilt-Over_Mast
Hello Sal and thx for taking the time to comment, Good to hear you are trying out your own project I have
seen this idea before but yours sounds like it will be a lot stronger.I am sure if you put weight on the low
side of the main mast to make a balance it will work out great, good luck
Nigel
You read my mind. I was thinking of adding weights at the bottom everytime I would tilt over as counter weight. I will be using a 3500lbs wench with a 2 ton pulley. Thanks again for responding. Wish I could weld like you. Your tower looks better than a commercially made one. Keep up the good work.

Hi there maybe see you on air.
It's a pole, not a tower. And you asked permission? All around pathetic.
Well mike sorry you think it's pathetic but when you have to abide by the local laws we have no choice I am sure we would all love to have 80 foot plus towers but we have to be thankful for what we have some people here in the UK can't even have a wire antenna.
7351 de 14jvc6205 du nord de france tres beau travail et tres propre j aimerais vous demandez si c est possible d avoir les plan ou shema du sisteme telescopique de vaotre mat svp merci a vous et bon contact
