  • This bonus episode features audio from the Holberg Debate (www.uib.no/en/...) in Bergen, Norway between Tyler and Slavoj Žižek held on December 7, 2019. They discuss the reasons Slavoj (still) considers himself a Communist, why he calls The Handmaid’s Tale “nostalgia for the present,” what he likes about Greta Thunberg, what Marx got right about the commodification of beliefs, his concerns about ecology and surveillance in communist states like China today, the reasons academia should maintain its ‘useless character,’ his beginnings as a Heideggerian, why he is distrustful of liberal optimism, the “Fukuyama dilemma” we face, the importance of “empty manners,” and more.

I've no idea how someone can read half of Zizek's work and not get his stance on Communism and Capitalism/Democracy.

What was misunderstood about his stance on communism and capitalism/democracy? Instead of vaguely alluding to some supposed misrepresentation, actually substantiate your point.

Oh, Tyler Cowen. Asking the same "gotcha," predictable question over, and over again.
Slavoj answered it clearly, multiple times, and he still doesn't get it. How annoying.

Why does the host not understand even a single point zizek makes and simply replies with irrelevant to what zizek said rhetoric abt communism that you hear from conservative folks? The host doesnt even understand the radical nature of zizeks views on feminism and gendar.

Tyler Cowen ignores what Zizek politely tells him, that he prefers communism over fascism. I wonder if Mr. Cowen ever even stopped to think that Zizek may not see his "freedom capitalism" as being so very free. No, ofcourse not.

      >Tyler Cowen ignores what Zizek politely tells him, that **he prefers communism over fascism**
Nope, Cowen himself probably doesn't disagree with that. What he does disagree is whether current day liberal governments should move in the direction of communism or to more liberalism.

It seems like the host clearly isnt well read on the topics of his questions. I dont even think he is intellectually dishonest, just not well read enough.

Although it was slightly annoying that the interviewer spent so much time on attempts at convincing Žižek that he's not a communist, I did find it very refreshing to hear an interview be antagonistic with him. So many so-called interviews and debates with Žižek are really just uninterrupted monologues covering many of his most familiar anecdotes, and it's rare to hear somebody push him hard enough to get him improvising and considering new points.

God, attacking him over an aesthetic humour, that's it, that is humour might be 'bad', it's bad as in that this guy didn't think any of the humour were jokes.

I've learned so much from Žižek, But it always remained unclear to me why he persistently avoids Nietzsche (although he constantly mentions Hegel Marx and even Engels from that times...) I also find it interesting what he thinks about Wittgenstein. He often refers to the Holocaust, but never mentions the Armenian genocide, Holodomor in Ukraine or the pogroms of Jews in Eastern Europe before fascism. And so on and so on...
