This whole thing is my teacher spirit animal. Sometimes I tell kids they must clap once whenever I say clap. Why? they ask. Who knows? I don’t make the rules. You maybe have to be weird to love teaching secondary. I definitely admire your work.
I shared your fun-loving community-fostering spirit and fun shenanigans as a middle/high school teacher once upon a time, but something happened to that spirit, and long-story short I’ve decided to quit teaching after 20 years. Maybe something will happen again and I’ll be back in the classroom with a Chewie mask or rubber chicken. But I’m burnt out. Kudos to survivors and champions like you!
This was really inspiring... I am becoming a teacher. I started subbing on a whim, and I've now worked here 2 years and I just got my teaching license. The relationships I have built with students makes me realize that the single most important part of education, is making it fun. Truly. We need weirdos, pranksters, and odd balls as teachers - not more sticklers, brainiacks and know-it-alls. True learning is different for everyone, and when you have the respect of students, education happens on its own. There are always kids in left field, kids that are extra hard, but taking it with a grain of salt, and reminding them that their best is all that matters, even if it's 20% and a good laugh for the day.
Love this so much! Definitely stealing some ideas. Some of the "weird" things I do... Sing parodies I write to help students learn content and/or play a song/rap I found on RUclips about our topic and rock out to it. I love stickers, too...but now I'm really getting into stamps. I bought a stamp in Germany that says "Danke" and has the Ampelmann on it...my kids are always confused but happy when they get a "Danke" stamp on their paper (means they did a great job). Dances - sometimes mnemonic motions to help remember stuff, sometimes I just bust a nerdy move to make a kid laugh. I have a Ninja Turtle mask that I put on when we learn about the Renaissance. I try to dress up for as many spirit days as I can. Sometimes I let students grab prizes from my "Swag Bag". They roll their eyes when I tell them the name, but they always get excited to see what's in it! Telling cheesy jokes - the cheesier the better. I love when students start e-mailing me jokes to use in class! For some reason I have a running joke in my class: whenever we learn about a new historical figure with a weird name I always say something like, "Hammurabi...Put that on your list of baby names for the future...your kids will love you...." My favorite thing that I like to do is I make a huge obnoxious sign (glitter, neon, etc.) that says "THAT'S MY STUDENT" and take it to every school event I attend for my kids (games, performances, etc.). I wait for the perfect opportunity to yell this at them and after the game I get them to sign it and take a picture with me. They LOVE it! Parents usually get a kick out of it, too.
Be Kind🌸🖤 I'm a bus aide and my students are 3 to 5 special needs, honestly love your channel! Everyday with my students is fun and up beat always leave the bus smiling! Thank you!!! Always need a reminder for why I go the extra mile for my lil ones! I do more then we're told but i enjoy helping them all on and off the bus and to me doing more is a plus. I help them into there seats and take there bags before I put they're seat belts on it's always fun cause all my students are different.
I recently started watching this guy. He is so teacher funny I am from Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹my beautuful caribbean island. I am also a preschool/ classclown /special ed teacher / want to become an occupation therapy teacher My props are my best friend I really enjoy seeing other teachers not afraid to be a classclown to bring fun joy and education together while teaching. It really wks no matter the age group your teaching Great job Mr Renolds
I have a love-hate relationship with your channel. I love what you do and your ideas, and I hate that I’m such a lame teacher. I don’t think I can pull any of these off.
I'm starting my first teaching job in August (high school AV/Graphics production), and I'm really excited and nervous at the same time. I'm 27 years old and want to be the best I can be. I'm certain I'll be watching several of your videos from now on!
Im a high school Art Teacher, and there are kids who dont want to be there, but I love your ideas, and I hope to shate them. I am using mre hand signale mire there days and maight make some big hands like you have- love it! I also love the stickers and eye balls too! Thanks for some pretty fun ideas!
I have a giant rubber duck called Duck Dude. He randomly sits on the desk of whoever is trying hard in writing time. He has a jersey for our local football team which he wears on game days. On May 4, I dressed as Rey and he had 2 cinnamon scrolls tied on his head a la Princess Leia. I have pool noodles cut into drum stick sized sticks and when we did our unit on The Outsiders, we started each lesson drumming along to a different song from 1967. I am going to adopt some of your ideas, too! Thank you for all you do!
For me the past school year I bought a customizable soundboard (called Stream Deck) so I can play random sound effects throughout class and it just helps lighten up the mood! Peace! reynolds.samcart.com/products/back-to-school-bootcamp
Love these ideas!!! Thank you, Reynolds! My weird items include magic wands that I use to celebrate students or give them luck before a test. They’re made of metal, and I tap them on the desks so they ring and then wave them above students’ heads. I’ve had students come back the next year when they’re having a bad day and tell me that they need some magic, so out come the magic wands! :) I also have a dancing hat that I sometimes wear as I greet students while they come into class. To learn students’ names at the beginning of the year, I have them throw a kush ballI to the student whose name I call as I take attendance and have everyone repeat the name so we learn each other’s names. I just ordered a Magic 8 ball and look forward to implementing more of your great ideas for engagement and building rapport. You are creative and fun! I am inspired.
I have a sign on my desk that says "Out of Answers." When we are doing a lab, I point it out and the kids always laugh. Parodies are the favourite though. I teach history, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. You put it to a funny parody and we are good to go. :)
I just applied to be a substitute teacher and am going to school. Your videos are giving me so many ideas and I wish I had, had you as a teacher. I can't even begin to tell you how hurtful a lot of mine were when I was a kid. They made me feel like a total failure.
I took a break from this channel as the fb group turned me off. I have to remember that I loved THIS place BEFORE the group so in that I am choosing to take the good and leave the bones. Treat the fb group like the teachers lounge and avoid. I survived my first year teaching 6,7,8 dual science hybrid and 8th grade English in person with my students jumping in/out of the classroom due to covid Next year will be no joke as we will be in person only from the start. I know I’m going to need help to truly be the teacher I want to be. That’s how I found this place. Thanks
Have you ever recorded one of your lessons? I think it would be great to see how you teach. And not like a demonstration, but just some clips from an average day.
I’ve been asked this a lot. I have not. The main reason being our classroom is a safe space because what is talked about there largely stays there. I wouldn’t ask the students to put themselves out there like that. I’m really blessed to have a wonderful audience and community with this channel but the internet can still be an unforgiving and mean place.
Hey C.J. I had a special national certification interview the other day and the assessor asked about the lesson they had observed and how I had engaged the students in the lesson... it wasn't until I watched this video that I realised that I had used this very tactic! (I used a mannequin head, which had a really bad hair-cut, scraggly beard-cut, and tear drop tattoo on one side - and luscious locks and full beard on the other ... believe it or not, it was very relevant to the activity)... I didn't even think about the fact that I was using a little weirdness for engagement.... now I just wish I had said that I was "sprinkling a little magic" [P.S. I completely forgot that I had made "Davis dollars" with my face on them as a reward years ago too] [P.P.S. I got the certification]
Okay, so I have these little stuffed animals hot glued to dowels (weird stuff) -you got me thinking so I just randomly popped one in our google meet…then I played dumb. Lots of laughs today thanks for the inspiration
Kids love weird stuff - my 8th graders could pick their own sticker, and some of them liked the sticker that said "sign and return" and wore it on their shirts!
i have my students in groups and every day someone at the table is the "captain" and responsible for speaking for the group, but a lot of time i end up losing their attention, but recently i brought in my nerf Master Sword and now i knight whoever the tables captain is, it's fun for a lot of my students and it's a good visual cue for the rest of the class to start getting ready for discussion
I’ll be starting my 2nd year as a drama teacher and this is all right up my alley. I haven’t acquired so many things yet. But the students always tell me that I am the most playful teacher in the school. I can’t help it. But I love being silly.
Hey fellow theatre teacher! 💜 I feel like we are always the teachers that keep the classroom engaged and fun because we know how to read a room and are not afraid of trying new silly things.
That's seriously why I love RUclips these days. I feel like I learn more tips from fellow teachers that have channels here than I ever did with any of my personal development courses.
lol you're amazing I wish I had you as a teacher, and I will definitely be trying some of this stuff out, and definitely be channeling this energy next year!
I can relate. I am an introvert and next school year will be my first in the classroom with the kids (this year was my very 1st year). My tactic to get through and feel comfortable is to hold a basting brush lol. It's just a comfort tool for me! Weird but it helps.
Bought little water guns so when some of them are sleepy or distracted I spray a bit of water on their shirt or neck and instantly brings the class together. Obviously as you said, I cannot use this with every student I need to have a relationship built with them so they know it is just for fun. Some wants to bring their own water guns 😂 I say « sorry I’m the teacher I’ve got the power and responsibility of the water guns » Thanks for being such an incredible inspiration! Students should have a teacher that enjoys having fun with them and doesn’t take life too seriously 🤗
i'll just go ahead and get my own copy of "teach your class off". According to Amazon, many people who bought this also got a couple of german books about teaching. I guess you must have many german subscribers. Thanks for the amazing job!
Love this! I like to do funny unexpected things too. I get to work with the kids 3-4 years because I teach orchestra. You can really get to know them in this amount of time and can do stuff like you said because they trust you. I view my class as the creative outlet for their day.😄
Great content as usual!I have always said that Human Beings seek novelty. Thant's why we have sailed across oceania. And that is why being weird works!
Karaoke mic 🎤, dragger/crowns for Macbeth, lightsabers/party masks for Romeo and Juliet, Bitmojis on a stick - theatre geek - I love props! Bubble machine, ornament size disco ball (small party 🎉), party headbands, etc.
Math teachers unite! :) Math always had the stigma of being strict and straightforward, but please don't let that sway you! Be weird - normal is just a dryer setting!
Sometimes when we play Kahoot with class content I'll add a question about the students, like "who has the best hair" or two students who had cars always bragging about them, I would ask "whose car is better" for vocab examples I would use student names or sometimes for the do- now or starter question I ask "whats your favorite (students MC name) song". Most students don't know, but its shocking and different from the more serious content questions and just livens up the classroom. Just including them in class content and knowing I pay attention to them
I am very weird and like having fun in my classroom, but I have a class that reacts so outrageously when I do something weird, (rolling on the floor, screaming with laughter, etc.) that I stopped doing it. It makes me sad that I can't do stuff like this without causing complete chaos.
I use a miniture composition book sometimes for review. The kids know to take out their math notebook and copy the problems I have up in mine under the doc cam. It cracks them up and keeps me sane too. 😂
On the first day of school, I make a point of asking a student in each class if they want a prize. I then make a big deal about shuffling about in my supply closet and emerging with a piece of construction paper that just has "A PRIZE" written on it in Sharpie. It's now a thing. Everyone wants a prize.
Hi there. Thank you for sharing us these ideas. I love all of them and really fit to my personality. However, At most time, any props I take to class, it is able to catch the child’s attention yet normally they will take it from me, and focus only on that. If I dont give the property, they will probably be mad at me. Anyway, I am teaching a smaller class. Consist of 2 to 6 students each class. May I have your hand to help me overcoming this challanges? Thank You
I have a stick with that Will Smith pointing at his wife meme on it. Whenever a kid asks what they need to write down even if I’ve said 3 times I use that to point it out
I got a classroom assistant, her name is Skelina. She dresses up in all sorts of outfits and wigs, tells jokes or reminds students of important dates. She is pretty cool despite not being very animated sitting in one spot all day. Oh, she is a skeleton by the way
Boredom is the #1 killer of learning. Thanks for keeping things interesting.
As a Middle School Science Ed major, this is 10 times better than all of my normal lessons. Definitely gonna use these tricks someday!
I'm finishing up school now to be a middle school science teacher. Where are you from?
This whole thing is my teacher spirit animal. Sometimes I tell kids they must clap once whenever I say clap. Why? they ask. Who knows? I don’t make the rules. You maybe have to be weird to love teaching secondary. I definitely admire your work.
yes! I feel like weird is the new normal these days and I'm all for it1
Thank you so much, man!!
I can’t even describe how much I love your unabashed weirdness, all for the welfare of students.

Karaoke mic 🎤, dragger/crowns for Macbeth, lightsabers/party masks for Romeo and Juliet, Bitmojis on a stick - theatre geek - I love props! Bubble machine, ornament size disco ball (small party 🎉), party headbands, etc.
Student fav, cowbell!
YOU ARE AWESOME
Well thank you 😊
I'm so glad I discovered your channel! When I finish college in 2 years and become a Math teacher I am going to keep these ideas in mind 😂
Math teachers unite! :) Math always had the stigma of being strict and straightforward, but please don't let that sway you! Be weird - normal is just a dryer setting!
*Chuckle!* I have a police security brick, and several "named" toys, including a formerly squeaky rat named Herman.
Just including them in class content and knowing I pay attention to them
Love it Raquel! Keep it up. ☺️
I am very weird and like having fun in my classroom, but I have a class that reacts so outrageously when I do something weird, (rolling on the floor, screaming with laughter, etc.) that I stopped doing it. It makes me sad that I can't do stuff like this without causing complete chaos.
Me too. Some classes are like this. I just wait til the next year and try it again. They require so much energy that I save the good stuff.
Great video!!
You made a video about a teacher assistant you built. I built one and he has become an important part of my class ever since.
Zach, this is literally one of the best things I’ve ever heard. Please please please send me a picture at realrapwithreynolds@gmail.com
@@CJReynolds I sent you a slideshow of multiple pictures.
@@zacharywilson2851 link to that video? Now I’m curious!
Thanks! This is very helpful :)
You deserve everything good in life LOL
Confetti? Our engineers would have a fit! 🤣
I have a vacuum I share with the other teachers on my floor for that very reason. ❤️😂
Yes, do share how you use beach balls in a lesson on equity or whatever….I will be awake all night now, wondering.
I use a miniture composition book sometimes for review. The kids know to take out their math notebook and copy the problems I have up in mine under the doc cam. It cracks them up and keeps me sane too. 😂
This video gives me energy... 😂I always have stickers in my room. They're the one "must have" tool I need to control a room full of 11 yr olds.
Isn’t it funny how they are 11, but stickers are still awesome? Amazing what they’ll get done for a sticker.
Get it buddy! Stickers never get old 😂
They really never get old. I still get stoked when I find some new good ones.
@@StephanieRace17 Its truly astounding what the promise of a sticker will motivate them to do. I too much time thinking about stickers...
This was awesome.I also live in Philly. What stores do you like to pick up your props? 🙂
5 below and the thrift store or I make them 😂
Man, you remind me of when I was a teacher.
Whenever a kid asks what they need to write down even if I’ve said 3 times I use that to point it out
Love it! 😂😂😂
Getting the eyeball stickers👁👁👁👁👁👁👁👁
I got a classroom assistant, her name is Skelina. She dresses up in all sorts of outfits and wigs, tells jokes or reminds students of important dates. She is pretty cool despite not being very animated sitting in one spot all day. Oh, she is a skeleton by the way
Fantastic!!!!!!
I also make my own money with my pick in the center over George Washingtons!! And I legit like my floral glasses.
