Erika, your skill is top notch. Love watching how you set up your approaches and time the flare perfectly, or smoothly time the run out technique. I shared this with my son in law who’s interested in learning to fly. I’m 78 and was soaring back and forth along that same sand ridge at Dockweiler in 1975. I went on to ultralights, then became an aviation writer, editor and photographer for national magazines. I owned and flew many hang gliders, ultralights, LSA, gliders, motor gliders, taildraggers and more. But the only thing I fly now is the hang glider. It’s where my truest flying heart has always remained. I share the above not to brag but to show people that following your heart can lead to amazing adventures. Thank you for sharing your excellent landing chops! Everybody who Is learning to fly HG should study this video. (BTW, my USHPA # is 2222. I’m very happy to have that number, I joined in 1973)
Thanks, and that's awesome! I hope your son-in-law learns to fly as well :) Dockweiler is my favorite and I've done some magazine writing about hang gliding too, hope to do more of it to keep helping promote the sport!
I'm new to the channel, hello everyone ... what I observe is the application of the aerodynamic movement of the stall ... a braking that decreases speed and altitude when she pushes the bars forward, away from the body, which comes out from horizontal to vertical... I've heard that we don't have the same facility to fly as we do to drive a terrestrial vehicle, but you learn, right? beautiful images
The sensitivity to land well in variable conditions - ok, next to nil and nil wind - is something that I had years ago and it is something that I still seek to rediscover after a 25 year break in flying. You do really good landings. Well done.
@@e.r.6147 cool little trick you can do is use Google to price out hang gliders lol. I'm just razzin ya. There's some pretty affordable ones out there! Just do your research! Oftentimes, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for!
If you can run downhill on a small bunny hill it will not get very much scarier than that if you start with learning foot launch first! And it is a whole lot of fun! First time you will achieve flying it will be about 1 or 2 feet above the ground and will feel like a success. From that point on, flying any higher will be under your control! The scariest part really is calling the flight school, making the appointment and going there the first day. If you can manage that, the chance is high you'll be happy you've done it for the rest of your life.
WOW! You have a perfect landing technique! I only wish I was 40 years younger and still flying gliders off Lookout Mountain in N. Georgia just south of Chattanooga. Make it a point to fly there sometime - it's a long straight ridge facing N.W. on a good day you can soar for hours!
The older I’ve gotten the more fear has grown from activities like this. This triggered my anxiety for some reason and I wasn’t even there! Stuff like exploring caves that are tight is another one that’s got me. So much so that getting an MRI is on the verge of a full blown panic attack!! If I could fly one of these no more than 10-15 ft off the ground I might give it a go.
This can't be the norm. Everyone who watches will want to start up hang gliding. Now I think I need to see a compilation of all the things that can go wrong with landings. Can somebody please put that together and narrate the different examples?
There are tons of crash videos on RUclips if you search for them. There’s always a risk of injury with anything, but I do try to show in my videos that hang gliding can be fun and not scary/extreme
This is so cool! Just watch one of your shorts on taking off on the beach. Man You make it look like your riding a bike in the neighborhood. Wonder how heavy those things are? And how long does it take to get a hang of one of these?
Thanks! Depending on the glider they weigh around 50 lbs (but they’re weightless when wind is holding them up). They’re a bit counterintuitive to learn at first so it generally takes a few months of lessons to get to the high altitude solo stage 🙂
i’m looking into doing hang gliding and I was just curious how do you do landings generally ? Is it a case of getting close to the ground and then flaring at the last minute to lose speed and final altitude? Are there any good books to read to prep myself or is it a case of just taking lots of instruction and practice ?
If I can chime in... dont know if you can read much and if reading helps much. These landings from Erika are really, really clean, I think not half of my landings are this good (but then again, it's probably me). In general, after doing a good approach (which is the basis for a good landing) you need to get on final, keep your speed, transition from the control bar to the side bars and then accelerate in this awkward position to compensate for wind gradient. But its a lot of things to think about: Body position, hands height at the bars, speed, wings level.... Speed is your friend, also while landing, I think thats key. Then ease-out, let the glider loose some energy, and push up (not front, up!). If you do it right, you land like this girl. If not, you may climb a bit more than you want (but keep arms high!!) and bomb down, no issue. If you dont keep pushing out, it will be a faceplant with the nose in the dirt. If you wait too long, you mush down and may not be able to run it out, also not that bad. But the worse is if you dont keep your wings level, there you can get into problems, I think that is the most important: Against the wind and wings leveled.
@@paicolman Thank you for the kind words! I think you about covered it for how to land :) I'd just add that lots of practice (including on training hills) and constantly videoing and critiquing your landings and others' landings helps for improving them. For new pilots, good instruction is key also to learn the technique and identify areas to improve

A little luck but mostly a lot of practice and focus on good technique 🙂 Also I should add these are fairly easy winter conditions at low altitude which helps too

Several years of hang gliding most of your sites, those are really good, meaning your sense of energy conservation is really good!
