- The Unseen - this short documentary film invites you to witness the impassioned battle to protect our most precious body of water and inspires a call to action. Explore the resilience of those who strive to hold authorities accountable, urging us all to play a role in the preservation of our natural wonders. Through breath taking footage capturing the raw beauty of Te Waikoropupū Springs and the destructive mud farming practices, this documentary serves as a rallying cry for environmental stewardship and responsibility.
This would not have been made possible without film maker Timothy Firkin and animator Grant Nicholson, the support from Kevin Moran, Save Our Springs and the many people involved in this mammoth ongoing battle.
Thank you all for the support. Please leave a comment. It goes a long way. Thank you!

The unfiltered truth. Well done Geoff and team. Thank you to all those people around NZ who see
the damage to our environment and work to hold to account the government depts and councils who fail so miserably to stop this ongoing damage.
Incredible production and work on an issue that needs to be put into the spotlight before its too late! Great work to all involved
Amazing mahi, Geoff, Tim and the WCO team.
If we get things right, and value the right things, people, animals and our environment will flourish; it’s a systems issue and requires a systems approach to rectify. #onehealth #onewelfare #teaomāori #animalwelfare
Thank you Helen. I couldnt agree more on systems approach.
Appreciate you sharing your wisdom on the live q and A panels in Takaka and Nelson.
Geoff, you have done it again, good sir!! Thank you (and Kevin) for educating all of us, shedding light on that which needs immediate action, and giving tangible solutions to solve this problem.
Superb and beautiful storytelling/advocacy work, bro. The world, and this country, need more humans like you. Thank you for all you do!!
Thank you. Wouldn't have been possible without the talented Tim Firkin behind the lens and across the edit. Also massive cred to grant Nicholson for his animation skills and the support form Save Our Springs. There is a lot of work to do yet.. we must keep the pressure on the polluters to change!
Beautiful work ❤ Thankyou
Thank you! 😊
People need to know about this! Beautifully communicated - good work Geoff and team
Thank you brother Wes! 🙏
Favourite documentary I’ve seen this year! Geoff is an awesome fella, love his mahi ♥️
Please bring this film to the cinema in Opunake. Due to the personal profit for a small minority of dairy farmers the whole community around south Taranaki has to have filtered water
That would be neat. could screen a couple.
Would you be interest in helping mobilise the community?
Some of the best work on the subject.
A National Treasure that must be saved.
Wrapped in a captivating storyline.
Cheers & Thx...
Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks
Excellent production and message Geoff. Well done and please keep it up. Awesome!
Cheers
LOL a Freudian slip or maybe just a double entendre ...at the 18:42 - 45 timestamp the news-reader said "...highest level of protection from the government". That's what we all need, and especially nature...protection from the government!! Great work Geoff and co.
Thanks Rod
Excellent work and getting information out in a beautiful way
Thank you Graham
Now these People are what you call true Tangata Whenua (People of the Land) real Kaitiakitanga (Guardians) looking after the Whenua (Land) Waipuna (Waterways) and Our Taiao (Environment) i applaud you all dearly for the marvelous work that you's have accomplished in making this sacred place "Waikoropupu" a Protected Site Nga Mihi
Another brilliant documentary and a significantly important message. Awesome work Geoff and team!
Many thanks!
Amazing work Geoff 😲
Many thanks!
Great work Geoff and all involved. Kia Kaha
Congratulations all who have been involved in producing this superb video.
And to those who have worked so hard to protect that which nurtures our souls.
Kia kaha
Simply eye opening and what a beautiful poetic performance to capture by a local pakeha elder. We need to learn and understand more about these important and sensitive critters of the deep
Thank you. Couldn't agree more. It's a priority ;)
Wow pretty amazing. Looks like a lot of dedication and thought was put into this, keep up the good work!
Thank you
11/10
Carefully articulated by the team - epic mahi 🙌
Very classy production 🙌 Thanks Geoff and team for exposing these realities in such an engaging and captivating way. This place holds a special place in many hearts, it would be devastating to lose it.
Thank you
Awesome Mahi from all involved! Hope this documentary helps bring attention to one of the many 'unseen' battles that kaitiaki around the country are constantly fighting for. It is our collective responsibility to protect what still remains and we need to hold those accountable who knowingly, and willingly disrespect the natural taonga's that have been gifted to all of us!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Amazing work Geoff, please continue to make more beautiful films like this. The 3D animations were especially cool! We just visited Te Waikoropupu a few weeks ago and it is such a special place, the clearness of the water is unbelievable. Way to use the story of this place as a guide for the larger picture in Aotearoa. Keep it up!
Incredibly mahi Geoff, Tim and everyone involved for bringing light to this. It's so important for us all to understand where our food comes from and the impact that has on the planet.
Thank you brother. Here's to film making!
This is a great video about the purity of Te Waikoropupū Springs and how they should be protected so they don't end up like Ellesmere as filthy water filled with nitrates! Farmers need to protect our aquifers, lakes and rivers better by reducing (ideally stopping altogether) their use of nitrates. The government needs to pass legislation to reduce/abolish use of nitrates. We need to think about the future!
Nice work Geoff Reid!!
Many thanks!
Incredibly captivating story, a must for all that call Aotearoa home. Big mihi to all involved. Mauri ora 🍃
Good work, yet again... keep at it.
Amazing footage and doco. The polluters and regulators must be held accountable.
Wow, what a treasure...well done Tim Firkin n Geoff Reid n all who have worked so hard for this.
🙌
Can't wait to watch this. Great Mahi! ❤❤❤
Youre a scholar, a gentleman and a gem
Vital mahi needed now more than ever, solidarity and prosperity for all Land Defenders 🙏✊🏻🌱
Beautifully told story. Great work!
Thank you very much!
Ngā mihi nui ki a koe Geoff and what you have put context to. Once we know the truth we have an obligation to make a difference! It’s so much more than science. It’s te taiao.
Thank you Sis!
Good work
Thank you! Cheers!
Great film, unfortunately people running a few cows for some $$$ ruins all the fresh water for the rest of us.
Thanks. Yup few too many cows spoiling the broth. Time to reduce the heard
Well done. Wonderful film. Let's hope we see something change soon...
Like what?
Like a reduction in inputs for a start
Many things need to change@@Billcali. On this topic of farming, that style of dairy farming is not good on many levels. Mainly on humane grounds, these poor animals are not supposed to live like that. And environmentally as this film shows quite clearly, keeping thousands of cattle on too small a space of land does not work. Even on the Serengeti where, naturally there are over a million animals in one place, they move around all the time. The land has time to recover. Farming used to be done on a rotational way, so the ground was never stressed in one direction. It has to change.
Great work thank you ❤
Our pleasure!
8:20 Bloody good stuff
Congratulations people of the Nelson area! I wish someone would do this kind of testing in the Tairawhiti area . Here the amount of maize cropping & intensive horticulture is a world of over fertilizing; over spraying of agrochemicals; over tilling of soil with big tractors 24hrs/ day! ... this next to monoculture pine forests being harvested with very wasteful & destructive clear-felling ... I am sure sadly the underground water , streams & sea are horribly polluted here.
We can farm, in harmony with the nature. Likewise we can produce wood without pollution! This should be supported at all cost with education & restrictions.
STOP DRINKING MILK
Most goes as milk powder and sold overseas..unfortunately
YEAH LETS STOP EATING MILK TOO! ;)
Tū meke!
A few years ago a Māori woman took us to see the natural spring that she was born in… it had been drained and flattened years ago by the owner…
Horrible, where abouts was that?
@@GeoffReidNZ I’m not familiar with the north island but it was somewhere south of Rotorua, I remember seeing a geothermal power plant on the way, and swam in a small hot spring which had a car park and wooden stairs built around it.
Can the springs be designated as a World Heritage site
hmmmm I have no idea. Will look in to it. Thanks.
Should of listened to our ancestors
Tasman Council represents farmers, business owners, and conservatives only (unfortunately).
True. Sadly they have failed them by letting them intensify the landscape. . . Now it's all got to change.
People have spoken. Only 12 dairy farms in the recharg zone... 12 Vs rest of NZ that want clean water.
Time to end dairy. Do we really want to lose our waterways for milk?
hahaha are kidding? Woke much..
Dairy is the backbone of this country. So Then what?
There are MANY ways to sort this out and the government does have subsidies etc for farmers..BUT it's not the farmers that are the issue here.
More like the wish bone. We know we have to look at other option. Banks and Fert reps have locked them into debt... Not all farmers went for the $$$ at all costs.
he is mad bro
Council that do KNOW better IN TOTAL DENIAL, what a joke, they should be ashamed, they should be leading the way. gET RID OF THE MAYORS THAT ALLOW THIS TOO HAPPEN
bad times are NOT required first to have good times afterwards. nonsense!
WELL PUT!!
Brilliant Doco! Well done Geoff Reid and everyone involved!!!
Cheers James 🙌 prescreenings were a huge success!
Another fantastic production Geoff! Amazing stuff!
Thanks for coming!
greed in criminal corporations knows no limits.
Especially when water for irrigation is involved.
Great work
Well done community. Shame on Tasman Council. Canterbury aquifers .. have not been protected from bug dairy
Big dairy
A real tragedy.
