While neat, this is 100% about the material hardness. Newer axes are not hardened as much to prevent edge chipping. Old axes they couldn't control hardening as well. If you wanted an axe with the same hardness as older ones with better modern materials, it's trivial to make. Customers don't want that, they want sharper edges with less chipping.
@lonelyplanet1080 notice how that light golden color flakes off when the axes are separated? That's not heat-treat tint. That's a layer of oxidized metal.
This is the entirely wrong test to determine axe quality. Modern axes are made to be less hard to prevent edge chipping, and easier sharpening. Just like a car in a crash, it breaks for a reason.
Да ты видимо из тех пропагандистов - менеджеров, которые внушают массам что чёрное это белое, добро это зло, свобода это рабство. Топор из железа хуже топора из китайского чугуна. Мы знаем вас. Ваше место в аду.
The pressure is equal from both directions. A bit like relativity. If there were no other reference points other than the Axes then there would be no way of knowing which axe was doing the pushing. like if the press machine was just floating in space then in effect it's just like squeezing something in your hand. Totally depends on the strength of the material. Thank you and good night.
That is an example of how stuff that seems simple can be complex. A hard metal is more likely to break and splinter. Imagine it like ice: Very hard but easy to break. You never want you axe to break, therefore modern axes are not that hard on purpose. Also, sharpening gets easier. Its also comparable to cars: The crash zone in front is designed to be soft so that it absorbs energy from an impact. Or Gorilla Glas on modern smartphones: The more scratch resistent they make the glass, the more likely it is to break.
i used to work cleaning ferry terminal windows (it’s like a raised platform hallway with walls made entirely out of glass) the new guy was working on one end and i was on the other. for some reason he’d brought steel wool to clean off extra stuck gunk off the TEMPERED glass… well when he started rinsing the glass he realized that he’d scratched the hell outta all the spots he scrubbed!!

Not necessarily, even a decently hard axe or hatchet wouldn’t be susceptible to chipping if you sharpen it properly and at the correct angle. Better get, convex the edge.
