The “for no reason, this happens” type of joke is hard to do, but when it works it’s amazing. It feels like in a way it informed some later comedy, like Tim and Eric.
"Homer, tell your child what you bought when I sent you to town to get some insurance." "Curse you magic beans!" "Oh, stop blaming the beans." It's amazing that this quick and absurd scene still manages to crack me up so much more than two decades later.

The running house gag was the hardest I've ever laughed at a simpsons joke. I think simpsons works best when it juxtaposes the ordinary with the surreal. So the humor in this season is some of the best imo

I agree with the perspective of Season 5 being the “midlife crisis” of the Simpsons, or at least the first one. The first 10 seasons are generally considered the best or “golden age” years of the show, I look at Season 5 as the literal midway point, marking the end of the first golden age (S1-S4) and marking the beginning of the second golden age (S6-S9). Season 5 onwards gradually became more pop culture, and surreal, highlighting the flaws and ridiculous tidbits of everyone else in Springfield. The first four seasons have the type of innocence and sentimental significance that made us fall in love with the show in the first place. This season set the groundwork for character development and self awareness. I personally greatly this season up to season 9, 10, in terms of their comedic timing but a lot of the innocence is stripped away. Certain episodes are just there and kinda don’t stick out as much but I appreciate the effort for growth on their part. Season 5 benefitted from the “old guard” style, but set up the following era quite nicely. This was a pretty good season IMO.
Season 5 really is the most complicated classic season of The Simpsons to critique and analyse, and I’m very proud of you for doing so. Are you going to do a retrospective / top 10 for the pre-Season 1 Tracy Ullman shorts? That's an era of the (pre-)show that is criminally overlooked, and I think a TON of early early worldbuilding, character development, and art development took place over the duration of these shorts, crude as they can be... The show's roots in underground comics and weird alt-'80's TV culture (before going overground/prime time) are fascinating.
This is the first "Golden Age" series, in my opinion. I don't know why, it's just one of my favorites. It's no series seven, or series nine, but it IS brilliant. It must be the fact the whole town gets involved in things most of the time, which I'm always a big fan of. Oh, and Homer the Vigilante is in it, which everyone loves.
I think what also balanced out the more aggressive Homer of this season was them playing around with the family dynamic more often. This is maybe the first season that really tries role reversals in a developed way, we'll have more moments of Homer being rather insightful or talented in his own weird way or actually effectively calling out when another character is full of crap (eg. pointing out how Marge's lecturing no-fun personality isn't exactly a good counterpart to his in 'Bart's Inner Child'). This is not just an ongoing 'Homer ruins everyone's lives' season like the later Scully era episodes were often complained to be. 'The Last Temptation of Homer' is a surprisingly poignant introspective for Homer within all his wacky antic episodes, even if it doesn't exactly break the usual characters to do so (though that brief gag with Lisa's half burned half frozen fish sticks was a hilarious oddball look at her, shame we didn't get more of that). We see more cases of Homer's foils being broken down and more fallible as well, Flanders is starting to snap at Homer's bungling in 'Homer Loves Flanders' until he stands up for him, and this is probably the first season to really develop Marge as this sort of self aware bore, someone who can be peer pressured and is TRYING to not be a killjoy but has her values so set down to earth (Marge in a rapper outfit at the parade was a great poke at this, this is her trying to be with it, people), $pringfield shows nearly everyone expect her to rain on their parade. Lisa is also starting to become more curmudgeonly, starting her crusades against everything but being undermined by the 'sheep' outlook of those around her. The Malibu Stacey episode addresses an issue that can be serious, but also queries how negative the repercussions are compared to how thick Lisa is laying it on or if anyone really cares if a kids doll spouts some somewhat chauvinistic quotes. It's not really like the girls are being brainwashed in this episode, they just wanna play with their toy and judge their buy by how many accessories it has rather than the life lessons it teaches.
Homer Goes to College number one. I love that episode so much. The concept makes perfect sense- of course Homer would understand college purely through films like Animal House. I love how Homer is so impulsive, like when he sets his high school diploma on fire, or chases a squirrel with a stick.
Watching season 5 in 95 was awesome. In those days it seemed to my 13 year old self that the Simpsons could do no wrong. Back then I had this feeling that the show would push the envelope too far and get cancelled before it's tenth season. Sure enough that never happened but it did help me to appreciate each season as if it was the last. And then came and the principal and the pauper......
Asmosis Jones not where I live it didn't. Honestly in Australia the Simpsons started airing 1991. I was shocked when I eventually learnt it began in 89 in America mobile.abc.net.au/news/2017-10-12/the-simpsons-off-free-to-air-after-fox-pulls-content-network-ten/9042134
Season 5 is the actual peak of the show. 2-9 is the Golden Age, with 5 leading the charge. 4 is almost as good, as is 6, but this was the perfect blend of all the seasons types of humor and stories.
I honestly think season five might be my personal favourite. In my opinion, there's not a dud episode in it. Some are... odd or go off at complete tangents (the Brad Goodman or Cat Burglar episodes, for example), but the end results are still very funny and that's what I'm looking for.
Keep it up real gems this is one of the best channels there is I've subscribed I'd like I hit that Bell I'm eagerly awaiting the retrospective on season 6 if there is one coming in the meanwhile I will continue to consume your content this channel is amazing
hot take: money issues stopped being a problem because of the money homer earned as a member of the be sharps (he probably still gets royalties from baby on board)
according to Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein for some of Season 5 there was like two months where the most senior staff members were: Oakley, Weinstein, Dan McGrath and Conan O'Brien with a power vacuum waiting to be filled, Conan left and got his own show and Dave Mirkin was appointed showrunner.
I get the impression sometimes that Seasons 5 through 8 were among the most stressful times to work on the show. I noticed on Wikipedia, Season 5 was where the ratings really started to slip, and they started doing Deep Space Homer, the Critic episode, and Who Shot Mr. Burns. I imagine there was a lot of pressure on this new group of writers during these years.
@@TheRealJims hence the reason why Jean and Reiss came back sporadically to produce 2-episodes per season in order to give the regular show runners time off. I'd imagine that the Northridge earthquake in 1994 also caused some chaos towards the tail end of Season 5 and at the beginning of Season 6.
Years ago, I was really into the DVD commentaries and I remember being so irked by David Mirkin when he became a regular voice. Often just so insufferable, talking over people, explaining obvious jokes. A real bummer at the time, honestly.
I noticed that a bit with those commentaries, as Mirkin has a slightly more domineering personality that Jean and Reiss. It took a bit of getting used to a new showrunner. At the same time, I didn't mind so much as it was clear how passionate he was about making a good show. I remember he did a final farewell commentary (kinda like Oakley and Weinstein did) and it was really heart-warming and nice
As someone who stopped collecting the show on DVD (when they just came to DVD) because the DVDs were horribly mastered.... i had no idea :O I stopped after season 2 but always LOVED the audio commentaries.
Rosebud, Springfield, Homer and Apu, Deep Space Homer, Bart gets an Elephant, The Boy who. Knew too much, these are some of the best episodes of all time.
Damn! There are a lot of episodes in season 5 that I remembered from my childhood. I guess that was at a time when I wasn't too young to remember what was going on, but just a lot of great episodes or memorable episodes for me were in season 5 it seems. Not to mention when UPN was around I watched a lot of reruns of The Simpsons on there and I think a lot of them were from season 5.
I kind of view season 5 as a growing pains season for Mirkin and crew. 4 was when the show really began the transition into the wacky, off the wall, gag fest that was codified by season 5. There's some absolute stone cold classics, but overall I feel like for a classic season it's a bit middling. Season 6 is my favorite season though, where I feel like the show reached its apex of humor, storytelling, and even animation.
One thing i also remember David Mirkin and co talking about in the commentaries about season 5 is how they stopped keeping as much a lid or paid as much attention to minor plot details or background enviornment if it got in the way of the story or a joke. in the commentary for "Homer And Apu' they even mentioned how yeah normally the show wouldn't of ever done a whole plot point of Homer and Apu going to India (especially when that wasn't even central to the story of that ep) but admitted they just liked the idea so much they just did it. Same with the revolving door gag from "Bart Gets An Elephant' as yeah they've shown several dozen times the kitchen DOESN'T have a revolving door but again just liked that bit so much they went with it. Obviously this is the style that eventually Mike Reiss and especially Al Jean would run with in later years but yeah this is where it really started even more then in 4 for better or i guess worse.
Yeah, and in Season 6 how the power plant parking lot is next to their backyard and stuff. You're right, they did get into that flexible reality aspect more. I should make a note of that for the next one of these.
@@TheRealJims It's a thing i'm glad they actually acknolwedged when talking about the show as though it's something you do notice watching the episodes you don't really specifically pick up on it like a major issue in this era or anything until it's more directly pointed out though yeah you could easily mention that being a thing in the season 6 look back.
It's heartwarming to see our hero go from wasting a golden opportunity when acquiring a brand of video-player he cannot expect to get much money out of during a blackout to at least getting a bed to get a full night's sleep on. That is very important for keeping his trademark charm.
I think its better than 8 slightly but between 7 and 5 its a real battle ..seasons 3 4 and 6 are god tier top of the heap...seasons 2 1 9 10 and 11 are right behind it...

"Protect the Queen!"
"Which ones the Queen?"
"I'm the Queen."
"No you're not!"
Freedom! Horrible, horrible freedoms!
Dude you unpack a lot about a show I thought I knew so much about. Love your videos!
And then came and the principal and the pauper......
it came out in 1993-1994..smdh...
Asmosis Jones not where I live it didn't. Honestly in Australia the Simpsons started airing 1991. I was shocked when I eventually learnt it began in 89 in America

8:08 100% everyone watching remembered the sound…
Tutitutitutitutitu ewhhhhe
Love your videos, so well made and intriguing. Could listen to your voice all day.
Good video as always, keep up the good work
Well hey now this band stage wasnt doublebolted!!!
2:14 love that Archie Bell and the Drells joke.
I love your videos. Your work actually got me into watching the simpsons beyond catching it on tv once it a while.
This channel needs about 100k more subs, great work on these!
Also whats the music used at 13:19? Sounds like Final Fantasy music.
I honestly never noticed that level evolution i always just felt like the laughs snowballs from season 4 - 8
Season 5 is the actual peak of the show. 2-9 is the Golden Age, with 5 leading the charge. 4 is almost as good, as is 6, but this was the perfect blend of all the seasons types of humor and stories.
completely nailed it, the one thing i'd add is animation-wise, the show peaked around seasons 2-3 but 5 is definitely the peak of simpsons writing
There’s a way to be bombastic and down to earth.
hot take: money issues stopped being a problem because of the money homer earned as a member of the be sharps (he probably still gets royalties from baby on board)
"Go big or go home."
I thought King Size Homer was in season seven.
No, King Size Homer is "Go big, _and_ go home."
So it happened again, I just finished watching his 4 retrospectives and then the 5th one comes out, last time was his who shot mr. burns
according to Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein for some of Season 5 there was like two months where the most senior staff members were: Oakley, Weinstein, Dan McGrath and Conan O'Brien with a power vacuum waiting to be filled, Conan left and got his own show and Dave Mirkin was appointed showrunner.
I'm honestly surprised we didnt get someone with the name Bart is asking for actually at Moes as a joke
It happened in Flaming Moes with Hugh Jass.
David Mirkin came from the highly underrated Chris Elliot sitcom Get a Life. If you watch that and his Simpson years you see a lot of similarities.
I've been waiting for this for a long time you never let me down jims
1:08: Ned Flanders with eyes like those and no glasses. Jeesh.
The art may have improved considerably since season 1, but we're not quite out of the era of janky crowd-shots yet.
@@AxelWedstar411 By "yet", do you mean Season 5 or the current Season 32? (Nevermind, I got that you mean the former.)
Rosebud, Springfield, Homer and Apu, Deep Space Homer, Bart gets an Elephant, The Boy who. Knew too much, these are some of the best episodes of all time.
This and season 6: BY FAR my favorite seasons
Can anyone please tell me what the heck "Three cheers for this rusty tailgate" means? I don't get it....
(From Homer Loves Flanders)
what is this profile name
To those who didn't get the reference at 0:55 that's a scene from the James L Brooks film "Big".
One Classic season condensed into one classic video, 'nuff said!
I was beyond terrified by the THX spoof in this season
I had the sudden urge to dance on an Island with Ice Cream & Lollipops....
This is the retrospective of the most fantastic Simpsons season ever!
"who needs miracles and magic when you can have an angry mob" - therealjims, 2019
"We humans do enough ridiculous and stupid stuff on our own"
I would like to be able to argue against this statement... but it's just too true
I love how at @16:13 when you said "Hammers" you showed that pic of Hutz in the courtroom fixing the judges shoes! Laughed pretty hard at that!
I kind of view season 5 as a growing pains season for Mirkin and crew. 4 was when the show really began the transition into the wacky, off the wall, gag fest that was codified by season 5. There's some absolute stone cold classics, but overall I feel like for a classic season it's a bit middling. Season 6 is my favorite season though, where I feel like the show reached its apex of humor, storytelling, and even animation.
season 5 might be my fav of all time
Great Insights on here my g 👌🏽
David mirkin's run is my favorite so many iconic jokes.
They seemed younger in season 5 the twists and screw you jokes seemed to help with that.
Can someone please tell me which episode 7:36 is from? The one with young Ned, Homer and Moe. Having a mind blank here
Bart's inner child
It's heartwarming to see our hero go from wasting a golden opportunity when acquiring a brand of video-player he cannot expect to get much money out of during a blackout to at least getting a bed to get a full night's sleep on. That is very important for keeping his trademark charm.
Has season five moved up in your favorites? I recall you ranking it lower than eight and before one.
I think its better than 8 slightly but between 7 and 5 its a real battle ..seasons 3 4 and 6 are god tier top of the heap...seasons 2 1 9 10 and 11 are right behind it...
Call me crazy, but season 5 is perhaps my absolute fave season of this show. Your analysis was accurate and well-researched! Very entertaining! If I weren’t so lazy, sick, and burnt out, I would write a thesis about why season 5 is pure, unadulterated hilarity, in my opinion, but my graduate professor whines that the only thesis ideas I submit are cartoon-related, so I guess y’all will just have to wonder why I will rewatch this ol’ tried and true satire til the Ant overlords finally pry the decrepit, used dvds from my dead, cold fingers. Thanks for reading 😂
This is my favorite season of The Simpsons. Some of my all time favorite episodes are in here; Homer Goes College, Homer Loves Flanders, Sweet Seymour Skinner's Badass Song.
I don't know about you, but I for one welcome our new ant overlords.
