I first saw this concept on an old Care Bears episode featuring Hugs and Tugs. It was presented as a straw 'flute', and for 25 years I could never figure out how to make it actually work. This video, which I have just seen for the first time now, explaining it's meant to be a kazoo - not a flute/recorder - makes SO much more sense, and solves a puzzle I've been trying to figure out for over two decades. Cheers!
It is NOT a straw kazoo. It is a straw oboe. A kazoo plays a tune by humming or singing into it. This you play by blowing into it and the pitch changes by changing the length of the tube. Go to www.kazoologist.org
I completely forgot that. I loved to make those... And I loved to cut them shorter. Thank you so much for making this video. And thank you for all your other videos.
Another entertaining way to get introduced to the effect of instrument length on pitch is to shove the end of a flute i a bucket of water and blow, then vary the depth of immersion.
@singingbanana Even better! Also, I just informed a very mathematical friend of your channel; he seemed interested, and really enjoyed the Benford's Law video!
actually - a kazoo makes its noise not through wind, but vocal pitches. so if you sing (say, in falsetto) into a kazoo, you will get the distinctive kazoo sound, but not if you just blow into it. this is merely a plastic one pitch woodwind instrument.
@Vgrd123123, Yes it will. Just not with blonde babes. For those you either need to be a babe yourself who plays the guitar or you just need a really big house and a nice car...

ColstonTheCrazy !, well the person who made this claimed this to be Kazoo, motley corrected him. And I care btw
i want to appreciate the suit and tie just for this straw kazoo. He looks so happy to share this life-changing advice with us

Absolutely amazing mate
Dear singingbanana, we've ALWAYS BEEN WATCHING ;) thanks for your great vids :)
@fildip Excellent!
@Fa771n9 Yup. I was as surprised as anyone to discover a camera set up in my house.
You make me think of Dr. Who every time I watch your videos. Which is great because I love Dr. Who.
that's actually quite intresting nice dude :) Kazoo!
oh that makes me so happy - what a fun sound!!!
Another entertaining way to get introduced to the effect of instrument length on pitch is to shove the end of a flute i a bucket of water and blow, then vary the depth of immersion.
why my straw make an odd noise.
not like yours.
i should drink a strawberry shake.
Now get some friends with different pitched straw kazoos, and create a band!
@DestroManiak It means "If you have been watching, thanks for watching."
Not the hero we need, but the hero we deserve.
you are like the happiest person on youtube, I love it!
@poutounouroux Perhaps your straw is too thick? Or it has a great diameter, like those longdrink straws?
That's awesome!
This is really great =D
Intelligence:5
Speech:7
Meth:100
Thanks i really needed it :D
@singingbanana Even better!
Also, I just informed a very mathematical friend of your channel; he seemed interested, and really enjoyed the Benford's Law video!
You sir, rock.
Press 8... Count to 4. Press 8 again. Repeat. Best song ever.
Ooooh I used to do this as a kid! Pissed my parents off so much...
This guy is epicly awesome.
love the jacket man
My teacher did this today and as she was blowing she cut the kazoo shorter and shorter and it made a higher pitched sound, cool!
Amazing mind blowing

You should clip a few holes in it and try to play a few tunes. Acoustic maths in the future maybe?
Don't know bout you but I laughed my ass off at that sound
Does it work with paper straws
Thanks just made one. Put a few holes in it to cover and uncover to get different notes.
Classy suit dude
It takes a lot for me to get this to work when I blow, and sometimes it doesn't work at all D8
@DerEngelDesTodes Maybe it's too thick... Thanks for help :)
@Pluvialis
OMG IT MAKES SENSE
thank you :)
dude that was genius
you are such a mad person but so totally awesome!
So that's what they figure out in the physics department.
Nice
Thx !!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice. You are good.
thanks i finally be a kazoo kid
Did you have a pint and wait for it all to blow over?
lol that was interesting =D
YOU SO AWESOME.
@P4C4N0W5K1 Then I went to the pub. That's how I roll.
Slide another straw over it and you have made a reed trombone!!!
thank you, waifu
Actually it's a double reed so it would be more like a Oboe than a Clarinet
So where was James Grime on 'Judgement Day'?
He was making a straw kazoo. Awesome.
Not really math, but very cool and funny!
He's so active omg
What a nice guy
Sing doo doo into it!
You are not pushing far enough, make a pan flute kazoo now!
and if you use some string you can tie together several of these and make a kind of pan flute :)
Before I liked this Video it had 6! likes. Oh shit, I destroyed it 😂
Nice one
i doesn't work for me. anyone have an idea where could be going wrong?
This is so smart! and funny:D but careful don't cut your tongue:p
*How to save the turtles*
So funny!
It is more like and oboe, not a clarinet. Oboes are double reeded, like that straw is.
Who has never found a straw in their hour?
You are super :D
it works
What are you saying at the end?
If you "have been" thanks for watching?
I think I need to have a drinking straw kazoo band at our next ceilidh. What a hoot, ...or a hum
I can't make it work! I did the exact same thing but when I blow it doesn't make any noise, juste like a normal straw... Help anyone?
Oh hi jimmy Fallon!
COOLEST PROFESSOR EVER
COME TEACH ME AT UNSW ):
i need to buy straws
I made this and terrified my dog. So fun
coolio
Sooo... you just walk around with a pair of scissors in the inside pocket of your suit?
Numberphile!

@Vgrd123123, Yes it will. Just not with blonde babes. For those you either need to be a babe yourself who plays the guitar or you just need a really big house and a nice car...
@looney1023 Or do it like MysteryGuitarMan and be your own band ;) (keyword: kazoos)
Sorry for the extra if😐
So funny
