  • Just because they are called "strawberries" doesn't mean you have to mulch with straw. In this video I show how well leaf bags suppress tenacious weeds in strawberry beds.

I spent 45 minutes today weeding a 5 foot by 20 foot bed. Have to say I think this is a great idea! Part of my bed is garlic planted closely together (and the plants are now well over a foot tall) so may not work with this method but the rest is pepper plant seedlings separated enough that this should work.

I must take a look at my strawberries patch although I never put the plants in a pattern like you have. After picking up several paper bags of leaves I may be able to make this work!

Thanks you for the strawberry information. Strawberries are one of my favorite garden plants.

Great video Greg...the uses of leaf bags!
I use them but I tend to run out....but I have access to many manilla file folders (from when we still had our construction business...once the records no longer needed we shredded contents of the files but kept the folders) they work amazingly well. Just lay them down in a double layer around the plants, weigh them down with whatever and done. I probably have several years worth still.
Cardboard...what a great addition to our gardens and the best part free!
Your garden is looking better than it ever has!
    Cheers
    Mike
