Cheers from a fellow Canadian worm farmer on Vancouver Island! I'm so sorry to hear you lost your worm herd, but this crew looks healthy and ready to get down to work. I don't have to deal with your winter temperatures, but for one of my large outdoor worm bins, I use a thermostatically controlled seed heating mat under the bin, which keeps the vermicompost temperatures around 15°C (60°F) through the winter. ~ Sandra
@nanasworms Cheers Nana! Thank you for the sweet comment & what a great tip! I have a few seed mats that is such a great solution! What do you use for your larger outdoor bins? I have my rubbermaids and I am not 100% Im in love with this condo but it was a temp solution to get my colony started again!
Haha, you will probably laugh, but my large outdoor bin is a turtle shaped children's sandbox/paddling pool I call Gilligan. I get over 200 L of vermicompost from it 2-3 times a year. The seed heating mat goes under the bin and the temperature probe goes in the bedding. ~ Sandra
Amazing,😊 yes we do both, mostly worms but setting up a new place for them outside. How do you manage them through the winter? I used to put them in our garage before we bought the land, and made the mistake of leaving them outside so I am researching winterizing as it gets to -40/-50 in the winter
Let us know if you do your own composting or have ever tried composting with worms! 😊
