Parts of this score were featured in Inglourious Basterds. Rod Taylor portrayed Winston Churchill in the film. Dark Of The Sun is a great action adventure film. It had a great composer Jacques Loussier who not only captured the action, but captured the emotion. The film is mainly about the dark side of humanity. In this film, there was a lot of it, which is why it is memorable. Jim Brown didn’t get along with Rod Taylor according to actor Kenneth More’s autobiography. But, as actors, they had to trust each other. Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux worked together on The Time Machine in 1961.
This movie score haunted me at once when I saw the film for the first time. A great job by the iconic Jacques Loussier (of Play Bach). Besides, the movie itself is a gritty adventure and real fun. A real all-male action movie, not softened up by any (silly) love story. (I know, Yvette Mimieux plays the female part, but it is really expendable for the story.) As a kid I always dreamed of an adventure flick like this one, omitting all pseudo-heroic and all romantic stuff. At times, it is brutal and has a slight sadistic streak (at least for the time it was produced - by today's standards it isn't even worth mentioning). One of the most memorabe 60's action flicks.
Absolutely. Minimal sentimentality. Good actors playing hard characters. A film that isn't afraid to show people as BOTH heroic and monstrous and trusting the watcher to know the difference. Pity its impossible to even imagine something like this being made today.
Went to see this film in the theater in 1968 and the opening theme is so haunting and powerful. Noticed it was used as a coda for Quentin Tarantino's 2009 Inglorious Basterds. But I don't see this composer was credited. Also coincidentally actor Rod Taylor was in both films (playing Winston Churchhill in Tarantino's movie).
It seems Morricone influence... The score would work for many different genres Noir (Which it is anyway)-- Adventure Neo-Noir. Western--Giallo Horror. Wonderful-& -Unforgettable.
This is one of the most under-rated scores written. I wish Loussier would have done more. He certainly inspired some of my work.

Excellent score
I agree. I first listened to this in the local library where they soundtracks. Even at 12 I was stunned. The movie matches it perfectly.
excellent theme
It is worth seeing
At all cost. The revenge part is worth it alone but the entirety of the movie is better than the junk we see now.

@@JL999k If they did it today, it would be trash. You cannot improve on it. Just like "The Wild Bunch"

Una muy buena película con Rod Taylor
The most fckin brutal war film I've ever seen
pulls no punches for 1968, a lot of this would not be made today!!
@@harryc1971 The male gang rape, feeding the nuns to the crocs, Henlein gunning down the kids. More. You're right
@@harryc1971 True Fact! it was so raw and compelling!
Shows war in all its brutality, not romantical, its based on a real person (the Rod Taylor character reached 100) @@HonoredGeneral

Fantástica música de Loussier para un contundente film del maravilloso Cardiff
