As an athlete, I've done back & front squats my whole life without paying attention to single leg variations. Now I mostly just do single leg to make up for a decade of neglect lol
Feel you. Few things blow up my legs more from a strength and hypertrophy context than heavy a*s lunges and split squats. Stoked to see how your growth comes along!
@@thatfitfriend I'm training for SFAS so I'm going for strength more than size, but single leg strength/stability is huge for my career goals. Did lunge sets of 6 reps per leg at 160 lbs last night. My current goal is to get to 10 reps per leg at 200 lbs
It can! Depends on a multitude of factors. You’ll be manipulating joint angles which will then shift focuses to different places. That said - from a very baseline level, Mechanical overview is similar for the most part, though.
Great video outlining the differences! I love doing front foot elevated split squats but tend to notice my knee on the back stabilizing leg will start to feel a little tweaked after set 2 of usually 12-15 reps. I do tend to do a slower eccentric lowering (about a 3-4 second dip) and hold for a second at the bottom, then push through the front heel. Wondering if the knee pain is just from the slower eccentric movements that could be causing more strain on the joints or if it’s just from the muscles being too fatigued during the sets and not giving as much surrounding support to the knee.
This is speculative, so please keep that in mind. It could be tight quads pulling the knee cap/causing it to track weird. Try doing a couch stretches for a few minutes before your next session and report back if you notice a diff!
@@thatfitfriend I really appreciate the suggestion! I’ll for sure give the couch stretches a try and let you know, I could use more flexibility/stretching additions in my day to day anyway! 😁
@@thatfitfriend update! Gave these a try yesterday evening and again before today’s leg session and I already feel like I noticed a difference in knee pain. It wasn’t entirely gone but definitely reduced, I plan to incorporate the stretches more into my off days and before leg sessions to see if it’ll rid me of it. 😁 Thank you!!
@@Smivzz context matters - depends on your goals. There’s no “one is always better than the other” type of logic here. What are you trying to accomplish ?
Yeah, you can also get a little more if you shift your stance/setup and loading style. Contralateral loading can be great (offset hand loaded per the dominant leg) and using a slightly more staggered stance may give you more glute med as it will be working to pull that knee from collapsing in
Why not show more exercise movements than your mug?! No sub here4me. Also, muzak intros are annoying - outro not so much. Good luck to you! I'll check back down da road.
Idc what you do, bro. “No sub from me” you sound like a whiny child. If you want to add constructive criticism, that’s fine - but don’t be so whiny about it, lol. God speed if you ever need to manage people one day.

Wow! I used to think spilt squats are lunges actually. It’s great to learn new things everyday.
Ayy! Glad this video helped 🤝
I had the same problem. I've seen people do a split squat and tell me it's a lunge! Glad I found this video to clear it up.
@@kaldheimknight stoked it helped!!

Really great contrast descriptions of lounges and split squats.
Thank you, friend!
Thank you for going straight to the point plus the explanations. Very well done sir 🤝
Got you, homie! I don't like wasting my time so I try to do the same for others
Thank you! This is a very helpful video. I appreciate the work you put into it.
I'm glad it helped. Thank you!
Do curtsy squat and speed skaters next. 🤙🏾
Great stuff my dude as always

Thank you, friend!
Straight to the point, thank you ❤️
Awesome, that's the goal! Stoked it helped
Very informative, very clear. Thank you!
Ayyy! Then it did its job. Glad it helped!
Great explanation! Thanks
Appreciate you checking out the vid!
Good one, would be awesome to see a weekly training schedule/program, including running, HIIT, strength sessions and stretching💪
Thank you! Maybe I’ll film that one while I’m on my month long road trip coming up. Could be a fun one to cover while traveling
thanks a lots bro!
Thanks for checking it out!
Great information...thank you 💎
Stoked it was useful for you!
What’s the purpose of the dumbbells being held from the back?
Just what I do sometimes. No “reason” per se!
For me it's easier to manage balance, because center of gravity is lower.
As a runner I have a hallux rigidus in one of my feet so I swiped lounges for the Bulgarian squats…
nicely explained!
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you!
I just prefer walking lunges. I do RDLs, front squat, calf raises, and leg extensions so I think I’m fine.
So a split squat is just a stationary lunge?
@@amberamera in simple terms, yep! There’s also the difference in balance/momentum with them
I hate these so much 😅 Definitely putting them back in my routine though. This was very helpful
Haha, the toughest things are often the best for us sometimes, sadly. Thank you for checking it out!
Thx!
so keeping the back foot on the ground vs elevated doesnt make any difference to the mechanics?
