Your take on Social.Security benefits after adoption are spot on. However the most difficult part will be the father signing away his parental rights. This is where manipulation might be necessary under threat of taking him to court for financial arrearages which he cannot afford. But the easist way is a cooperative birth father. But to be safe this is a situation where Janet must document abandonment or no contact for 5+ years. That would include no financial support, no gifts for Christmas and birthdays, no attendance at family gatherings and no participation in cultural traditions between father and son. Good luck.

I was so glad to hear of your positive and exciting adventures. That was our initial plans when we desired to retire to the PI. Unfortunately that has not come to be. Our experience took the dark side of taking on a new culture. I'll go into detail which you might use for future videos.
My point today was not to cast any shadows but to wish and applaude your success and bright future. Look forward to meeting your family.

@@mikesphilippineretirement it's not a very difficult process with the Irish embassy. You just need patience.
It's a waiting game but no rush.
One the adoption is through then PJ will technically already be a US citizen and he is entitled to it.
It's the adoption process can take time here.
As for mindanao? The place gets under your skin.
      It really becomes home.
I go back to Ireland every 3 months for 3 months and I actually get homesick.
Skin tax, taking advantage of the foreigner........ I have never experienced that here.

I think an in depth review of Iloilo would be great. We stayed in a condo next to Festive Walk for a week and although the place was clean and good roads etc I found the people to be less friendly than other places and costs of living higher too, so a look at the outskirts and surounding towns would be awesome.
Wishing you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2024

Hi Mike and Janet, I just searched SSA website regarding the adoption and SSA benifits... it was a quick search so I might have missed something...
    this is what I found:
A child who has not lived in the U.S. for
5 years can meet the 5-year residency
requirement if the parent who is the
worker, and the other parent, have both
lived in the U.S. for 5 years. However,
we will not pay children adopted outside
the U.S. while they reside outside the
U.S., even if they meet the residency
    requirement.

We do know for four years now. And for me, she is the one. I am 65 years old by myself and I decided this way since everything runs more terrible her back in Germany. Hopefully I can find people who can be a little more close to us. The biggest reason is my girlfriend lives way up north. But I believe it always is a choice to move to different places. 1. ROXAS on the opposite end of the island from IloIlo City, on the coast, VERY inexpensive (single person, $500 month as an example with rent), LARGE well ordered public market.many amenities.
    2. Malay Balay on Mindanao north of Davao City, COOL climate, inexpensive, small town feel. Also, Valencia City just South of Malay Balay. take bus from Davao City, airport soon.

Be sure to have google translate at the ready, while the internet says a lot of people speak english in Vietnam I found that was not the case. Was in Saigon for a month in 2022 and took 3 or 4 cabs a day, we only had one cab driver that spoke a little english. Your malls have plenty of english speakers, and some restaurants. Be sure to use Grab or Vinison taxi services, the most honest. I did enjoy my stay there though. Safe travels

My soon to be x-wife did the Chocolate Hills and the Trasiers. I had to go see them Monkeys because my Travel Guide ( Lonely Planet ) said that those Monkeys Committ Sucide, that might seem morbid, but since they say Monkeys are the closest to man. I also thought they might do that if their taking out of their natural habitat. I also thought that maybe somebody took down to the city and if it had a leash, thats how they did it, but that wasn't how. I ask my Tour Guide about it and she said she didn't know, but, I got lucky there was a Japanese Man behind me that knew about it, said the damn things bang their heads until it kills them. They guy that drove us up there, I invited him with us. We also took him on the Zip Line bought Coconut Drinks. I think he was shocked that we did that. I just thought it was stupid just to leave him standing outside and he probably didn't have the money to do it on his own time & dime. I think his name was Jobear, but that could also be the guy that pick me up at the Cebu Airport.

I think you will find 90 + percent of the expats will be fine. Just remember that in any group there will be some lemons. I figure you either make lemonade out of that or just pass on the bad ones and you'll be fine.

Hi Mike why don’t you apply for the Special Resident Retiree's Visa Expanded Courtesy. This non- immigrant visa is specifically for people with prior service in the military.
The visa allows you to stay in the Philippines indefinitely, and you can still travel out of the country whenever you want.

Good luck with the adoption. You'll need it. Mate of mine took nearly 4 years, hundreds of thousands of pesos, and a lot of red tape. Hopefully you will have it easier, but knowing the Philippines, i doubt it.

It’s my understanding that in order for an adopted child to be eligible for SS benefits under your eligibility the adoption has to take place in a U.S. Court. SS laws can be generous when it comes to qualifying dependents but I think it’s a good thing to have some safeguards in place to avoid supporting the world by simple marriage and/or adoptions outside of US courts and laws and rules. I think in the case of marriage to a foreigner there are time limits set to make a foreigner spouse eligible to collect on a SS annuitants benefits. I understand wanting to protect and make sure your wife and stepson will be taken care of but if it was as simple as going overseas and marrying and adopting in a foreign to make them eligible for SS benefits under your benefits, then the system would never be able to be sustained. Best wishes.

maybe they will receive some SS benefits maybe not. I do not know the law but I will find out later

I have a question, do you know if you can find a GPS to attach to the motorcycle? I messaged the Garmin store in Cebu and they said they only sell watches. I have issues losing signal on my phone a lot so having a satellite signal would be the best.

Japan is a consideration in moving forward and I would think that is a good topic of discussion. The Philippines will definitely benefit but possibly lose what is important to the foreigner as a country that can provide an affordable lifestyle. Will Japan's interest in the Philippines affect the rythm of the Philippines and the foreigners planning to retire there. I would think that the Filipinos would imbrace this interest and accept all that progress and wealth it will create. What say you.
